Little Lord Fontleroy
Lighting: When the main character “Emma woodhouse was born, it was very bright lighting to show a happy time, the narrators opening lines was “Emma woodhouse was born with the sun shining”. Pathetic fallacy was then shown as the mood changed (the mother died) the lighting was then very dark with just flickering candles for light. This is shown throughout the clip, the lighting been bright when the mood is happy and dark normally with a few candles when the characters are sad or a disaster has happened.
Setting: Surrey, UK Props: Common props used throughout are candles, this is a source of light for them, also we see them use big umbrellas, for shelter from the rain. Horse and Kart are also commonly used in the episode as this is the only type of transport besides walking.
Costumes The costumes are very suited for this time, the children always look smartly dressed, the women wearing long tops and long skirts (not showing an flesh) and the men in long dinner suits with top hats. The three times different young children were given away the past carer was normally dressed in black, to give the impression of loss, as black clothing can be symbolic to death. The maids wear different costumes to show their character –normally a pinafore and grey dress, with a hat to hold their hair back.
Lighting: Like part one, we see that natural light is used throughout. Their only light source is candles; which they only use at night when it’s really dark. Setting: Surrey, UK The setting in part 2 shows us the time period “Emma” was set in. The houses are shown to be Regency as Prince Regent was reining at the time. This period was by the Victorian period; the houses also look quite a lot like they would in the Victorian times. The insides of the houses are quite plain, having white walls and dark furniture, not much colour in the room but does have a few hanging pictures. The snow in part 2 shows us it may be winter time.
Props: Common props used throughout are candles, this is a source of light for them, also we see them use big umbrellas, for shelter from the rain. Horse and Kart are also commonly used in the episode as this is the only type of transport besides walking. Another prop shown in episode 2 is the use of a letter, showing a way in which technology has not developed and a different way of communication back then. Straw baskets are used to collect their shopping in whereas now we would use trolleys or metal baskets.
Costumes The costumes are very suited for this time, the children always look smartly dressed, the women wearing long tops and long skirts (not showing an flesh) and the men in long dinner suits with top hats. The maids wear different costumes to show their character –normally a pinafore and grey dress, with a hat to hold their hair back. In part 2 Emma says; “I wonder if we have time to have you a new dress made for the Western’s Christmas party?” informing the audience that the majority if not all of their clothes are made themselves or buy someone they hire, like a maid.
Lighting: Like part one, we see that natural light is used throughout. Compared to parts 1 and 2, quite a lot more of the filming is done outside, so natural light is used more frequently then the candles. Setting: Surrey, UK As I said quite a lot more of the filming is done outside, we are able to see the setting more clearly. The Sky is clear blue and the grass is very green and looks well kept. The little country paths allow us to understand the setting, being in a countryside. The houses all have huge courtyards and gardens, with must be watered and looked after everyday. Sound: Background music is used in ‘Emma’ for a change of scene (setting) the music is very classical and doesn’t have any lyrics to it just an orchestra playing. The dialogue used is very formal and all the characters are well spoken. Even when they are annoyed at each other they still speak in a pleasant calm way. Instead of using the word party they say ‘the ball’ or ‘a social occasion’. A common Diegetic sound is footsteps, this leads us to understand they don’t have carpets in the house but wooden floors.
Props: Common props used throughout are candles, this is a source of light for them, also we see them use big umbrellas, for shelter from the rain. Straw baskets are used to collect their shopping in whereas now we would use trolleys or metal baskets. The bench that is used isn’t a plain wooden one but is white metal and has detail to it. A prop which is only used in episode 3 is a market stall, we have an idea they are used in 1 and 2 but don’t actually see it.
Costumes In part 3 we see Emma Woodhouse go to a gathering, even then they are wearing posh dresses and big hair accessories. In part 3 we also see the characters including Emma at a ‘ball’ all the ladies are wearing long dresses, a lot of them cream and also are wearing cream gloves. When they are out in the sun the ladies wear hats for protection and still wear long dresses. Period Dramas like ‘Emma’ portray their characters to wear the same clothes or at least same style of clothes whatever the occasion. As I have mentioned this is Long dresses for the women and suits for the gentlemen.
