Biomodd: Art, Ecology, Gaming and Community Al Francis D. Librero UP Open University alfrancis.librero@upou.edu.ph
What is Biomodd? ,[object Object]
The core idea is the creation of experimental systems in which modified computer networks coexist with living ecosystems. The challenge is to bring biological life as physically close to the electronics as possible, and allow them to communicate with each other through meaningful symbiotic relationships.
Biomoddis a nomadic project in which subsequent versions are built each time with different collaborators and new materials. In this way each version reflects the cultural and social conditions in which it was created and is a reinterpretation of the original concept.,[object Object]

Success In The Philippines A steady stream of Biomodd-related projects since the start of Biomodd[LBA2] Incorporation of Biomodd and New Media Art in the Bachelor of Arts in Multimedia Studies in the UP Open University Building of a large community of around the project that continues to have an active core group of members. Establishment of linkages with various universities, organizations and companies. Considerable media exposure for the project and involved parties throughout the exhibit run of Biomodd[LBA2]
Issues, Challenges And Limitations There have been conflicts regarding the importance of heat. A higher level of interaction between computers and living components has already been conceptualized but yet to be successfully implemented. Difficulties in melding traditional and contemporary art remain. The installation requires a significant amount of maintenance. The collaborative nature of the project requires a good number of people that complement each others’ skills to ensure a smooth designing and building process. Biomodd continues to be difficult to explain to people as it has proven to mean different things to different people. Biomodd does not aim to save the world. As a science project, it can even be considered as a paradox. But as an art project, it is a powerful symbol for possibilities.
The Future for Biomodd Full interaction between technology and biology Develop Biomodd into something closer to a true ecosystem Explore other possibilities at the conceptual level Biomodd as a symbol or representation of extrabiological evolution Explore other possible relationships between computers and living components. Promote collaboration and expand the community for succeeding iterations. Continued incorporation in the UP Open University’s academic program.
