- One day I noticed the Hashtag“#IHaveASecretCrushOn… “ was trending. With my curiosity piqued, I clicked over to the Hashtag stream to read the tweets. It was filled with answers like Justin Bieber, Lady Gaga and Ashton Kucher, which made perfect sense because collectively they had millions of followers. With all those followers having secret crushes would make that hashtag trend. I was disheartened when I noticed there we no intellectuals listed among the answers, so I decided to tweet, “#IHaveASecretCrushOn… @SirKenRobinson ” and I used his actual twitter handle. At the time -- I was reading his book “Out of our Minds”, and I thought to myself, “if twitter is a reflection of the collective mind-share of our species, we certainly will be out of our minds if we let this platform devolve into a gossip column.” It was just a small gesture to balance out the pop-culture takeover of twitter and I felt as if I’d scored a little victory for intellectuals everywhere,,, that is until I saw that Sir Ken had RTd the tweet. I was TOTALLY embarrassed, turned beet red, then started looking for a digital rock to crawl under. But while I was worrying that Sir Ken would think I was a twitter stalker, I began to view twitter as a safe public arena- where the general public had unfiltered virtual access to actors, singers, heads of state and even intellectuals. There were no velvet ropes at this nightclub.
