2. Past Time
Regular verbs
Simply add –ed to the bare infinitive.
Verbs ending in –e, just add -d
•I enjoyed the film
•I loved the film
All persons have the same form

Regular verbs
Verbs ending on consonant plus –y – change the –y to -ie
•try - tried
•cry - cried
Verbs ending with one vowel and one consonant –
double the final consonant
•regret – regretted
•fit - fitted

Irregular Verbs take on many different forms
•eat - ate
•drink – drank
•wake – woke
•take – took
•be - was

Questions
For questions it is did + the bare infinitive
•Did you enjoy the film?
•What did you do yesterday?
•Did you drink all the milk?
•Why did she leave?

Negatives
For negatives it is did not + the bare infinitive
This is contracted in speech and informal writing
•The coat didn’t fit me.
•Emma didn’t eat very much.

An action and states that are completed
in a period of time
We know when the action was so we can use a time expressions
•I enjoyed the film we saw last night.
•We listened to the radio yesterday afternoon

The form is the past of the auxiliary verb be
+ the ing form of the main verb
•I was sitting by the door.
•You were laughing.
•He was driving
•We were crying
•They were eating

Invert the subject and he auxiliary verb be
•Was I sleeping? •Were we talking?
•Were you waiting? •Were they leaving?
•Was she driving?
Wh- questions follow the same pattern

Also describes several situations in progress
at the same time
•While Emma was cooking, Paul was phoning a friend.
•The airport was full of people. Some were sleeping on
benches, some were shopping, other were reading.

We can use when or while to mean ‘during the time that’
•While we were waiting on the train, it started to rain.
•I cut my finger when I was peeling the potatoes
If we mean ‘at the time that’
then we only use when with the past simple
•She was very happy when she got he exam results
