trip into the future and landed on October 21, 2015. We’ve compared
and scored today’s technology based on the predictions made in

  • 1. BACK TO THE FUTURE MEETS TODAY. Did the movie get it right? Today’s the day. Twenty-six years ago, Marty McFly made his famous trip into the future and landed on October 21, 2015. We’ve compared and scored today’s technology based on the predictions made in Back to the Future Part II*. Take a look to see how far we’ve come. INTERNET OF THINGS Marty McFly witnessed digital clothing and automatic kitchen aides. Today’s IoT revolution has brought smart watches, home automation and even a smart herb garden like in the movie. Sixty percent of the buzz around iOT devices relates to joy, admiration or anticipation. CAR OF THE FUTURE We can’t convert banana peels into energy yet, but Tesla’s new Model X has 100K+ social mentions since being announced with 60% of sentiment relating to joy, admiration or anticipation. HOVERBOARD Since June 2015, Hoverboards have averaged 4K+ social mentions a day, and Tony Hawk’s pilot video on YouTube got 13M+ views. A FAX MACHINES This may be the one thing Back to the Future Part II got terribly wrong. Today, it’s all about email—9 out of 10 consumers constantly check email with 88% of millennials checking on smartphones versus 76% who use desktops or laptops. EXTRA CREDIT The term “McFly” used sarcastically to describe a poor decision has 300K+ social mentions since June 1, 2015. B AVERAGE 13M+100K+ TABLETS In the movie, Marty McFly was asked to donate to the clock tower on a handheld tablet. According to Adobe Digital Index, 11% of visits and revenue to retail websites come from tablets. FLAT-SCREEN TV Sony and Samsung lead 4K TV social mentions with over 2M+ since June 2015. At the 2015 Consumer Electronic Show, the average TV screen was 63 inches. While Marty McFly’s trip to October 21, 2015 may have been fictional, it wasn’t too far off today’s reality.
