6. Improving your power Factor can reduce operating costs by eliminating or deferring the need for
new equipment, help existing equipment last longer and make future expansion less costly. Also
lower rating sized equipment can be used, saving unnecessary capital expense. All this is in addition
to a quick return on installing capacitor systems to improve power factor.
From the Electricity utility point of view, raising the average operating power factor of entire grid
network from 0.90 to 0.99 means,
-Reduced costs from inefficiencies in the network.
-Increased generation and distribution potential
-Lower demand on the grid
This means the utility can save hundreds of tons of fuel (and produce fewer emission), have more
transformers available and reduce the likelihood of building new power plants and their support
systems. For this reason many electricity utility companies pass a power factor incentive to consumer so
that they can save the additional cost required to support efficient system
In connection with reactive power compensation, power quality should also be considered.
Harmonic filtering reduces the risk of technical faults and disturbances.Voltage distortions
resulting from harmonic currents are caused by inverters, DC drives, fluorescent lighting,
converters, UPS, arc furnaces, etc. In practice harmonic filtering brings a number of bonuses:
Disturbances in telecommunications and data transmission are minimized.
Electronics, control systems, converters, motors and generators operate without
interruption.
No risk of overloading cables, nuisance tripping of relays or fuses
Poor quality may remain unnoticed for a long time. Quality deficiency may easily bring extra costs in
the form of high electricity bills and an oversized power system.

B. These percent of harmonics are within specified limit defined by Utility board
C. Current reduction is about 2 Ampere
D. Voltage is improved.
E. As current is reduced, harmonics are within specified limit & installation of new Harmonic filter banks , net KWh unit reduction is about 1800 to 2000 KWh per day.
F. About 2.8 % to 2.9 % saving in Kwh.
3. In Power House 3
At Transformer 1 Incomer:
A. Voltage harmonic distortion is reduced to 3.8 % from 6.6 % & current harmonic distortion is reduced to 5.5 % from 12 %
B. Power Factor is improved to 0.995 (lag) from 0.969 (lag)
C. Current reduction is about 113 Ampere.
D. Voltage is improved and found stable.
E.As current is reduced, harmonics are within specified limit & installation of new Harmonic filter banks , net KWh unit reduction is about 360 to 400 KWh per day.
F. About 1.5 % to 2 % saving in Kwh.
At Transformer 2 Incomer:
A. Voltage harmonic distortion is reduced to 3.8 % from 8 % & current harmonic distortion is reduced to 3.7 % from 12.1 %
B. Power Factor is improved to 0.993 (lag) from 0.906 (lag)
C. Current reduction is about 150 Ampere.
D. Voltage is improved and found stable.
E. As current is reduced, harmonics are within specified limit & installation of new Harmonic filter banks , net KWh unit reduction is about 1050 to 1100 KWh per day.
F. About 3.5 % to 4 % saving in Kwh.
At Transformer 3 Incomer:
A. On this transformer, only one RTPFC filter panel is installed which is running satisfactory in auto as well as manual mode.
B. The load on this transformer is not stabilized as many new machines are under commissioning on PDBs.
C. Still Power factor is improved to 0.995 (lag).
D. New filters to be installed after load stabilization to maintain the power factor & harmonic suppression to achieve substantial reduction in KWh.
Note: Observed readings are for 10 mins only, during which it is assumed that load is fairly constant.
Thus power savings indicated above will have to be observed over a long Period.
So it is observed that all the Harmonic Filter Bank supplied by M/s.Claritas Power System Solution Pvt Ltd,Pune are working properly and delivering
satisfactory results.
