 There are twenty two breeds of goat found in India.
 The chromosome number of goat is 2n = 60.
 In India, the second position of goat.
 The average age at first service of goat is about 12-18 months.
 Breeding span of the goat is 5-8 years.

This region comprises J & K,HP, & hilly areas or
part of UP.
The region has only 2.8 % of the total goat
population of the country including pashmina
producing goat.

in black, grey or brown.
They have large twisted
horns.
The breed is raised for
both meat and the
valuable cashmere also
known as pashmina.
The Changra are also

They are well built and
sturdy animals and
have drooping and
pointed ears with long
pointed horns bending
upwards and

The hair is about 17-
19 cm long and
lustrous.

region of India north of Uttar
Pradesh and northest of
Himachal Pradesh.
They are kept for the production
of cashmere fiber and for meat.

It varies in build and colour but the
most highly esteemed has large ears,

not spirally twisted, and a long,
straight, silky white coat.
the outer coat of coarse hair the fluffy,
soft underfur or pashm (present in all
goats) is particularly luxuriant and
forms the product for which the breed
is valued..

Goat Breed .
This region comprises Punjab, Haryana,Rajastan,
Gujrat, and some parts of UP & MP.
The region has the largest number of goats
comprising 43% of the total goat population of the
country.

Jamnapari
originated
in
the Etawah
District of
Uttar
Pradesh,
and is
particularly
associated
with
the tehsil o
f Chakarna
gar
They are white with tan or
black markings on the neck
and ears;
They are beard is present in
both bucks and does with a
tuft of long hair on the hind
legs.
They are considered the
largest ,tallest and most
elegant of the long legged
goats of India.
They have long and
pendulous ears (26-28 cm),
tubular with the opening
towards the front.
The horns are short and
flat, horizontal and twisting
backwards.

The Jamunapari
breed is a dual
purpose breed with
good meat and skin.
The milk yield is 280
kgs in a lactation
period averaging 274
days;
the highest recorded
is 4 kg a day with a
lactation yield of 575
kg.
The fat content of
milk ranges from 5.2
to 7.8 percent.

Bharatpur

Rajasthan.
As well as
in Jhelum
and
Sargodha
districts in
Punjab

Pakistan.
Barbari goat is a small
sized meat goat breed
Barbari goat has unique
characteristics. It’s a pretty
small animal with medium
sized compact body.
They are alert and
attractive. And have bulging
eyes, because of their quite
prominent orbital bone.
Their ears are short, tubular,
almost double, with the slit
opening in front, erect,
directed upward and
outward.
Bucks have a large thick
beard.
Body wt. : Male : 38 kg
Female : 23kg
Barbari does have well set
udder with conical teats.
Both bucks and does
have twisted horns, which
are directed upward and
backward and are
medium in length.
Barbari goat has wide
variation in coat color.
But usually white with
small light brown patches
is the most common
color.
Barbari goats are well
known for their good meat
qualities and also for
triple kidding. Both bucks
and does mature early
and are resistant to
common goat diseases.

the Sirohi
district of
Rajasthan.
Sirohi goat is a medium
sized animals. It has
predominantly brown colored
coat with dark or light brown
patches. On occasion, the
color of a very few goats may
be completely white. The
body is covered with fairly
dense soft and coarse hair.
Sirohi goats have medium
sized flat dropping ears
(much like leaf), and most of
the goats are wattled. Both
Sirohi buck and doe have
small horns which is curved
upward and backward. Their
tail is curved upward and
medium in length. Their legs
are long and very strong.
The udder of Sirohi doe is
small and round, with
small teats placed
laterally.
Sirohi bucks are much
heavier than the does.
And the average body
weight of an adult buck is
up to 50 kg and doe is up
to 30 kg.
They are easily adaptable
to different climatic
conditions and are
resistant to major goat
diseases.

Marwar
region of
Rajastan.
Marwari goats are medium
sized animal with
predominantly black color.
But goats with brown and
white markings are also
found. Their coat contains
long hairs, and the coat is
shaggy and dull in
appearance.
They have long, flapping and
dropping ears. Both bucks
and does have medium
length horns. Their horns
are directed upward and
backward and pointed at
tips.

Average produce about 0.5 to 1
kg of milk daily when raised on
The Marwari goat is a
dual-purpose breed
of goats. It is raised
for both meat and
milk production.
Marwari goats are
very hardy and
strong animals. They
are well adapted to
the harsh
environment of the
Thar desert.
And also noted for
their disease
resistance power and
their capabilities of
thriving well in very
harsh nutritional
conditions.

 The
Beetal is
native to
the
districts
of
Gurdaspu
r,
Amritsar
and
Ferozepur
in
Punjab.
 Beetal is second to the
Jamnapari in size but is
considered superior to it as it
is more prolific and adapts
more easily to different agro-
ecological conditions and stall
feeding.
 They are predominantly
black, but black, red, tan or
heavily spotted on white also
occur; males usually posses a
beard.
 They have long pendulous
drooping betel leaf shaped
pinna and horizontal with
backward and outward
twisting horns.
 Age at first kidding is about
600 days and kidding
intervals thereafter are of
about 368 days.

 Female : 38 kg
 The average milk
yield per lactation is
288 kg .
 In addition to being
considered a good
dairy breed,
 The Beetal is also
known for its good
quality meat and
skin.

 The Surti
goat is
distribute

tra.
 Surti goats are small to
medium sized animal with
compact body. Their coat is
predominantly white in color
with short and lustrous hairs.
They have medium sized
dropping ears. Their forehead
is prominent and face profile
is slightly raised.
 Both bucks and does usually
have medium sized horns.
Their horns are directed
upward and backward. Udder
of the does is well developed
with large conical teats. They
have relatively short legs, and
they usually unable to walk
long distances.
 The Surti does are pretty
large than the bucks.
 Body wt. : Male : 30 kg
 Female : 32 kg
 Surti goat is mainly
used for milk
production. But they
are also good for
meat production.
They are very well
suited for milk and
meat production.
 The does are
excellent milk
producers, and on
average they can
produce about 2.0 to
2.25 kg of milk daily
under stall fed
system with
supplementary feeds.
But under village
conditions with
grazing goat
farming system, they
can produce about
1.2 kg of milk daily.

Mehsan

breed

Mehsan

 The Mehsana is a large
sized breed.
 The colour of the coat is
black with white spots at
the base of the ear.
The Milk yield averages
one kg/day.
 The litter size is mostly
single. Average yield of
hair per goat per year is
200 grams.

 Ears are always white.
Both sexes have twisted
horns curved upward and
backward.
 The udder is moderately
developed having large and
conical teats.

 The Mehsana goat
is a dual purpose
breed of domestic
goat which is
raised primarily for
meat and milk
production.
 The Mehsana does
are pretty good
milk producers.
And they produce
about 1.3 kg of
milk daily. Their

twinning is low

breed
derives
its name

Jakhran

in Alwar
district
where it
is found
in its
purest
form.
 They are large animals.
 The coat is predominantly
black with white spots on
the ears and the muzzle is

face line is straight, with a
narrow and slightly
bulging forehead.
 The breed looks similar to
the Beetal, the major
difference being that the
Jakhrana is taller.
 The ear length is medium
and the udder is large,
with conical teats. Does
are reared for milk.
 A majority of the bucks are
sold for meat, with a small
number retained for
breeding.
 Body wt. : Male : 55kg
 Jakhrana goats graze
on natural pastures
but can also be
managed on stall
feeding. This breed is
well known for its
milk potential
averaging a daily
yield between 2 to 5
litres. The milk has
a relatively higher fat
content (5.06%), SNF
(8.60%) and protein
(3.70%).
 These goats show
good prolificacy and
the kidding
percentage is 90.
Kidding takes place
twice a year (June –
July and October -
November), with a
twinning percentage

 Native to
the
Kutch
district
of
Gujarat.
 The Kutchi or Kathiawari, is
an important dual-purpose
(meat and milk) goat breed.
 They are medium-sized
animals.
 The coat is predominantly
black, but a few white spotted
animals are also found.
 Ears are medium in size,
floppy and drooping with
typical white markings.
 The coat is shaggy and dull in
appearance with medium to
long coarse hair.
 The annual yield of hair is
about 200 gms when shorn
twice a year. Both sexes have
short, thick horns pointed
upward.
 Body wt. : Male : 48 kg
 Female : 40 kg
 Average milk yield
is around 2
kg/day under stall
fed conditions and
0.5 to 1 kg on
grazing resources.
The lactation
length is about 6
to 7 months.
Generally there is
one kidding
annually with a
twinning
percentage of 11,
which increases
with
supplementary
feeding under stall
fed conditions.

goats
are
native to
Gujarat.
They are
large
animals.
 They are medium-sized
animals.
 The coat is black and
comprises long coarse
hair.
 Ears are long, wide, leaf-
like and drooping.
 Both sexes have long
twisted horns, pointed
upward.
 The kidding percentage is
78% and the litter size is
mainly single (82%) and
sometimes twins (18%).

 The average daily
milk yield is 2 kg
and the lactation
period is about
200 days.
 The average
annual yield of
hair is 245 gms.

Southern region Goat Breed .
This region comprises Maharashtra, Karnataka,
AP,TN,Kerala.
It has about 43% of the total goat population of
the country.

 Tall animals. Of animals
surveyed, 73% were black
and the rest were white,
brown or spotted.
 Ears are medium long.
 Most males (89.5%) are
horned; females may be
horned or polled, in
almost equal proportions.
 Tail is medium long and
thin.
 The udder is small and
round with small teats
placed laterally.
 In farmers' flocks: kidding
percentage: 80 to 90%;
 litter size: singles: 50%;
 twins: 40%; triplets: 10%.

 Konkan Kanyal goats were
registered as a distinct breed
by the National Bureau of
Animal Genetic Resources in
May 2012.
 These goats are mainly black
with a white marking in a
specific pattern–the ventral
surface of the body is white
and the legs have white
‘stockings’.
 Konkan Kanyal goats have
bilateral white strips from
nostrils to ears; a flat and
broad forehead; flat, long
drooping ears; backward,
straight, pointed, cylindrical
horns; white muzzle and long
legs, laterally black, medially
white from knee to the fetlock
joint.
 Konkan Kanyal
goats are regular
breeders and breed
round the year,
with a twinning
percentage of
about 66%.
 Those breed
reared mostly by
the Dhangar and
Maratha
communities for
meat.

Eastern region Goat Breed .
This region comprises Bihar , West Bengal, Orissa,
Assam , Meghalaya , Arunachal Pradesh , Mizoram
,Tripura , Nagaland and Sikkim.
It has about 25% of the total goat population of
the country.

 This breed is usually

gray. The Black Bengal
goat is small in size but its

other breeds.
 The female goat becomes
pregnant twice a year and
gives birth to one to three
kids.
 This breed can adapt to
any environment easily
and its disease resistance
is very high.
 An adult male
goat weights about
25 to 30 kg and
female 20 to 25 kg.
It is poor in milk
production.
 It produces high-
quality meat and
skin, and is
preferred for the
skin and high
prolificacy rate

Ganjam
breed,

Dalua,
Those
breed
found in
eastern
India,
primarily
in the
Gajapati,
Rayagada
and
Koraput
districts of
Odisha.
 A small number are also
found in Sikkim.
 They are tall, leggy
animals.
 The coat may be black,
white, brown or spotted,
but black predominates.
 The hair is short and
lustrous. Ears are
medium sized and both
bucks and does have long,
straight horns, directed
upward with a medium-
length tail.
 The kidding percentage is
82 and the litter size is
primarily single (98.4%).
 Kidding takes place once a
year.
 Milk yield is about
3 kgs a day and
the average
lactation period is
150 days.

  • 7. Northern temperate region goat This region comprises J & K,HP, & hilly areas or part of UP. The region has only 2.8 % of the total goat population of the country including pashmina producing goat.
  • 8. Changthang region of Leh district in Jammu and Kashmir, The breed is most often white, but is also seen in black, grey or brown. They have large twisted horns. The breed is raised for both meat and the valuable cashmere also known as pashmina. The Changra are also useful as pack animals. The goats are reared under an open grazing system throughout the year. Body wt. : Male : 31 kg Female : 26 kg Ave.pashmina production –214 gm . Kidding takes place once a year and only a single kid is born. Mature does yield 200 – 300 ml of milk a day once the kids are weaned. About 15 – 20% of the goat population is culled every year and sold to butchers for meat. The National Bureau of Animal Genetic Resources has put the Changthangi goat breed on the ‘endangered species 1. Changthang

The Gaddi breed, also known as the White Himalay an, distributed throughout Chamba, Kangra, Kullu, Bilaspur, Simla, Kinnaur and Lahaul and Spiti in Himachal Pradesh and Dehradun, Nainital, Tehri Garhwal and the Chamoli districts of Uttarakhand. They are well built and sturdy animals and have drooping and pointed ears with long pointed horns bending upwards and backwards. Kidding takes place once a year with single births. Body wt. : Male : 27kg Female : 25 kg Wool production- The hair is about 17- 19 cm long and lustrous. one shearing yields ½ to 1 kg of wool. The meat is coarse and devoid of fat, and milk yield averages about 1.5 kg/day. 2. Gaddi
  • 13. Kangra Valley The Chgnu is found in the region of India north of Uttar Pradesh and northest of Himachal Pradesh. They are kept for the production of cashmere fiber and for meat.   • 15. Cashmere goat, also called Kashmir goat, a breed of domestic goat valued for its soft wool, used for the manufacture of cashmere shawls. It varies in build and colour but the most highly esteemed has large ears, slender limbs, curved spreading horns not spirally twisted, and a long, straight, silky white coat. the outer coat of coarse hair the fluffy, soft underfur or pashm (present in all goats) is particularly luxuriant and forms the product for which the breed is valued.. Body wt. : Male : 28 kg Female : 22 kg Ave.pashmina production – 2 kg . The breed is also called as pashmina . The outer coat used for blanket and kashmiri shawl. 4. Kashmiri
  • 18. Northern western arid and semi-aried region Goat Breed . This region comprises Punjab, Haryana,Rajastan, Gujrat, and some parts of UP & MP. The region has the largest number of goats comprising 43% of the total goat population of the country.

The Jamnapari originated in the Etawah District of Uttar Pradesh, and is particularly associated with the tehsil o f Chakarna gar They are white with tan or black markings on the neck and ears; They are beard is present in both bucks and does with a tuft of long hair on the hind legs. They are considered the largest ,tallest and most elegant of the long legged goats of India. They have long and pendulous ears (26-28 cm), tubular with the opening towards the front. The horns are short and flat, horizontal and twisting backwards. Body wt. : Male : 45 kg Female : 38 kg The Jamunapari breed is a dual purpose breed with good meat and skin. The milk yield is 280 kgs in a lactation period averaging 274 days; the highest recorded is 4 kg a day with a lactation yield of 575 kg. The fat content of milk ranges from 5.2 to 7.8 percent. 1.   • 22. Those breed found in Agra, Etah, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat and Bharatpur district of Rajasthan. As well as in Jhelum and Sargodha districts in Punjab Province, Pakistan. Barbari goat is a small sized meat goat breed Barbari goat has unique characteristics. It’s a pretty small animal with medium sized compact body. They are alert and attractive. And have bulging eyes, because of their quite prominent orbital bone. Their ears are short, tubular, almost double, with the slit opening in front, erect, directed upward and outward. Bucks have a large thick beard. Body wt. : Male : 38 kg Female : 23kg Barbari does have well set udder with conical teats. Both bucks and does have twisted horns, which are directed upward and backward and are medium in length. Barbari goat has wide variation in coat color. But usually white with small light brown patches is the most common color. Barbari goats are well known for their good meat qualities and also for triple kidding. Both bucks and does mature early and are resistant to common goat diseases. 2. Barbari
  • 25. native to the Sirohi district of Rajasthan. Sirohi goat is a medium sized animals. It has predominantly brown colored coat with dark or light brown patches. On occasion, the color of a very few goats may be completely white. The body is covered with fairly dense soft and coarse hair. Sirohi goats have medium sized flat dropping ears (much like leaf), and most of the goats are wattled. Both Sirohi buck and doe have small horns which is curved upward and backward. Their tail is curved upward and medium in length. Their legs are long and very strong. The udder of Sirohi doe is small and round, with small teats placed laterally. Sirohi bucks are much heavier than the does. And the average body weight of an adult buck is up to 50 kg and doe is up to 30 kg. They are easily adaptable to different climatic conditions and are resistant to major goat diseases. 3. Sirohi
