This document discusses how Ela Area Public Library introduced virtual reality to their patrons. It provides an overview of VR headsets like Google Cardboard, Samsung Gear VR, Oculus Rift and HTC Vive. The library uses a Ricoh Theta S camera to create 360-degree videos of the library, local landmarks and events for viewing on their in-house headsets. They circulate Google Cardboard viewers and a Samsung Gear VR for in-library use. Tips are provided on Gear VR apps, storage, challenges and getting feedback from patrons.

Technology is the new information – let’s democratize it. VR can be used educationally – I’ll probably briefly mention the Google Expeditions here. Getting people interested in emerging technologies encourages them to be the innovators of tomorrow. The Joy of Discovery is a major part of Ela’s upcoming strategic plan and mission. Also because it’s fun – nothing wrong with providing our patrons with fun.
Cardboard: $15 for “original”. Requires smartphone with gyroscope. Works great w/YouTube, Street View, some apps made specifically for Cardboard.
Gear VR: $100+ higher-end Samsung phone - $400-700+ Interface powered by Oculus. More immersive experience, many apps available.
Oculus & Vive: most premium VR experience. Include sensors so you can use your hands/body. Cost $500-$600 plus computer with powerful processor, graphics card, etc. - $1000+. Require more space; Vive has remote sensors and needs a larger empty space. Many excellent apps, games available.
Ricoh Theta S – around $300. It’s nice to have a smartphone available, to record remotely, and also to download and view videos right away, but not strictly necessary. Videos must be processed on a computer using Ricoh’s free app. Designed to be shared online (generally, YouTube or Facebook) or viewed on a phone or computer with the Ricoh app. Hard to share – can’t just send to someone who does not have the app. Post online instead.
Not needing to buy a computer makes it more economical. We hope to circulate ours someday. Without a need for sensors, it can be used in a small space.
You need at least some space – not safe to have people use in a public area. Get feedback that is general and also ask for app suggestions.
Not all staff members will be comfortable with VR. Certification lets the comfortable staffers meet with and answer questions about the equipment. Give a tutorial of the controls, list the apps, go over health and safety concerns – 13 and up, use while seated, watch for nausea and dizziness
Ours are just in a closet with a surge protector for charging the phones. We use boxes to protect the equipment.
Designate someone to check for updates REGULARLY, also to check if phones remain paired with headsets and controllers. Install Applock or similar protection. Designate someone to clean off the Gear after each use and to check for the correct apps. Replace the foam on the headset periodically - $15 for replacement.
