Abigail Smith
Age and Location
I asked the female participant her age and current living location.
The participant informed me that they are 17 years old. This is an appropriate age for
my interview as my Target Audience will be from 15 – 25.
How often do you listen to music?
The participant answered this question by telling me that she listens to music almost
frequently, “when I’m on the bus to college, in my ‘frees’ [free periods], while I’m
studying and when I’m at home.” This suggests that my Target Audience will be
passionate about music and listen to it whilst both relaxing and studying. I may
incorporate this into my magazine by including images of a student listening to music.
Education/Subjects
As the participant is a student, I was told that she studies A Level subjects such as
Psychology, Media Studies, Film Studies and Ancient History. This range of subjects
suggests that my Target Audience are creative, with interests in Arts and Culture.
Music Taste
I asked the participant the sort of music genres which would appeal to her, and she
informed that she usually listens to ‘chart music’ which often includes music of the
Pop/Rock genre. The participant also mentioned that she likes artists such as Katy
Perry. My own magazine will focus on the Pop/Rock genre and I may take some
inspiration from Katy Perry for the splash image.
Downloads/Purchase
I asked the participant on their preference about downloading music or buying it in a
shop. The participant told me that they usually buy music through iTunes. This
suggests that my Target Audience prefer to download music, and so I will provide
facilities to do this on my magazine.
She also told me that she usually spends approximately £10 a month on these
downloads.
Music Apps
The participant was asked if they use any music apps to listen to music. The
participant told me that they use ‘spotify’ to listen to music. I will try to include a
reference to spotify in my own magazine, as this will be attractive to the Target
Audience.
Hobbies/Interests
The participant mainly has musical interests. She informed me that she would like to
attend Leeds Festival this year and has previously attended the Evolution Festival in
Newcastle, May 2013. This suggests that my Target Audience enjoy festivals and so I
will try to reference one of these in my own magazine.
Music Recommendations
I asked the participant if they ever refer music to their friends, to which she responded
with an affirmative answer. This suggests that my Target Audience like to share their
music tastes and also promote their favourite artists.
Social Networking
The participant is involved in a lot of social networking sites, as expected in a younger
Target Audience. Some of the examples provided include “Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr,
Instagram and Kik.” I will try to include images of the brands of these companies on
my own magazine to appeal to the Target Audience. Links to some of these social
networking sites may also appeal to the T/A.
Personal Style
I asked the participant what sort of clothing and brands she liked, and was told that
‘Apple’ products and ‘Vans’ were popular brands, as well as retailers such as ‘Topshop’
and ‘Boohoo.com’. I will try to include these brands in my own magazine, or use some
of these brands in the splash image.
What I have found out:
From this interview, I have found out that my Target
Audience are heavily involved in social networking
sites, have interests in old and current culture, like
brands such as ‘Apple’ and ‘Vans’, enjoy chart music
and attending music festivals (e.g. Leeds Festival). I
will try to incorporate all of these likes and interests
into my own magazine so as to appeal to my Target
Audience.
