 Buddhism is based on the teachings of Buddha,
who was seen as an enlightened teacher.
 People who practice Buddhism are called
Buddhists, and they are divided into two
groups: ordained monks and lay-people. The
ordained monks practice their religion with
extreme dedication and teach others about
Buddhism while the lay-people have families,
work for a living and live their lives according to
Buddhist teachings
 Siddhartha Gautama ,also referred to as Buddha
Shakyamuni.
 Born a Wealthy Prince in ancient India in a place
called lumbini(Nepal) in 563 bc.
 Went on a journey, saw a “sick man, an old man, a
poor man, a corpse”.
 Realised the suffering in the world.
 Decided to leave his comfortable life and become an
ascetic.
 Chose to follow the “middle path”-a life without
luxury and poverty.
 Searched for enlightenment/truth.
 Dint find it for long time.
Mahabhinishkramana
 Sat under a Bodhi tree, din’t move until he reached enlightenment after a period of 6 years
 Highest state of enlightenment : Nirvana(liberation). It refers to the “blowing out”of the flame of
desires. With this gautama become buddha “the awakened one”
 This led him to share wisdom from the Wheels of Dharma through the Hinayana and Mahayana
teachings(dharmachakrapravatan).
 His teachings became popular in Asia, especially India, and gradually spread to other countries.
 Spent rest of his life preaching as a monk.
 Preached about how to achive enlightment
 Today, Buddhism is one of the most popular religions, with many followers worldwide
