Worldwide, overhead electricity distribution is performed using poles made from various materials. The choice of the most efficient pole material is based on management strategies that integrate concerns for environmental sustainability. By quantifying environmental impacts of products, life cycle assessment (LCA) is a tool which can be very useful to decision-makers. But how, where and to which extent has it been applied to power utility poles until now, and which accomplishments and challenges can be pointed out from the findings of these LCA applications? To address these questions, a review of accessible published LCA studies of power utility poles has been carried out. By employing well established literature review methodologies, a computer search of journals, conference proceedings, and reports have been carried out and retrieved case studies have been analyzed according to the criteria derived from the four phases of LCA international standards. From a performed review process, it was realized that a total of 13 LCA case studies have been increasingly conducted during these last 26 years in only four countries around the world. The case studies included both comparative LCA of various pole materials and LCA of a single pole material. The main used utility pole materials, the main considered functional units, the main assessed impact categories, the most considered environmentally friendly pole material, and the main challenges in the field have been identified and documented. LCA constitute a useful research field when studying the sustainability of power utility poles. Although existing case studies are scarce, the review highlights several outstanding accomplishments which show what have been satisfactorily done and what needs to be done. Currently, the topic is mainly limited to USA and Swedish researchers; developing countries seem to have noting to do with and there is not yet a methodological consensus which could facilitate a deep comparison between published case studies.

This term paper for York University Master of Environmental Studies course ES/ENVS6115 Ecological Economics (Winter 2011, Prof. Peter Victor) explores how firms will react if / when limits are places on their ability to obtain and create flows of bio-physical materials - irrespective of cost. This paper got a positive review from Prof. Victor who said "this is a good paper.I like the way you have drawn on the management literature to address an important question in ecological economics. Despite its length, the paper is only an introduction to a large topic that requires empirical investigation (e.g. relating to specific limitations, economic sectors, within the context of international trade)".

Industry has long been one of the most important drivers of Chinese economic growth. In order to improve the environmental footprint of industrial areas, Chinese authorities have established mechanisms of environmental control in the internal management processes of companies. In this regard, the international standard ISO 14001 for environmental management systems is the management tool that has had widest adoption among Chinese companies since its creation in 1996. The main purposes of the paper are to investigate the available international and national statistics on the adoption of ISO 14001 in China, and present opinions on ISO 14001 of the 72 representatives of small and medium enterprises and multinational companies of Guangdong province that participated to the workshop “New tools and standards to advance and measure corporate sustainability”, held in Guangzhou on 26 January 2018. The analysis of strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats (SWOT) was adopted as the research method to collect opinions on the ISO 14001 standard. Participants were asked to discuss strengths, weaknesses, threats and opportunities considering four business aspects: sustainability, internal processes, stakeholder engagement, and resource management. Our findings indicate that companies fully embraced ISO 14001 and recognized the necessity of a standardized approach to identify environmental aspects. On the other hand, they also expressed concern about aspects such as the certification cost, the focus on certification itself and not on the improvement of environmental performance, and the lack of integration with sustainability tools such as life cycle assessment (LCA) and other sustainability paradigms such as circular economy and corporate social responsibility (CSR).

Global warming and the acute domestic air pollution in China have necessitated transition to a sustainable energy system away from coal-dominated energy production. Through a systematic review of the national policy documents, this study investigates the policy mix adopted by the Chinese government to facilitate its energy transition and how that policy mix has evolved between 1981 and 2020. The chronological analysis emphasizes two dimensions of temporal changes in the policy mix: (1) changes in the policy intensity and density, and (2) the shift in policy instrument combinations. The policy mix has evolved from a few authority-based instruments to the current response that has a large density of instruments with a good diversity of instrument types. The Chinese government imposes an increasing policy intensity on air pollution abatement and a decreasing policy intensity on renewable energy support, and experiments with innovative policy instruments to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. The evolutionary trajectory features layering new policy instruments, calibrating existing ones and some degree of policy replacement and sequencing. Overall, the study shows that the Chinese government has adopted a complex mix of policy instruments to abate emissions (e.g. carbon dioxide and sulphur dioxide) in the coal-based energy system and to support renewable energy technologies. The study provides an in-depth understanding of Chinese policy design in the environment and energy fields and contributes to the public policy literature by filling a research gap – the comparative lack of empirical analyses on the temporal changes in the policy mixes.

The occurrence of heavy haze pollution days is the most visible effect. Although many researchers have studied such problem, a high number of spatio-temporal limitations in the recent studies were identified. From our best knowledge the long trends of PM2.5 concentrations were not fully investigated in China, in particular the year-to-year trends and the seasonal and daily cycles. Therefore, in this work the PM2.5 concentrations collected from automatic monitors from five urban sites located in megacities with different climatic zones in China were analysed: Beijing (40°N), Chengdu (31°N), Guangzhou (23°N), Shanghai (31°N) and Shenyang (43°N). For an inter-comparison a meta-analysis was carried out. An evaluation conducted since 1999 demonstrates that PM2.5 concentrations have been reduced until 2008, period which match with the occurrence of the Olympic Games. However, a seasonal analysis highlight that such decrease occurs mostly during warmer seasons than cold seasons. During winter PM2.5 concentrations are typically 1.3 to 2.7 higher than in summer. The average daily cycle shows that the lowest and highest PM2.5 concentrations often occurs in the afternoon and evening hours respectively. Such daily variations are mostly driven by the daily variation of the boundary layer depth and emissions. Although the PM2.5 levels have showing signs of improvement, even during the warming season the values are still too high in comparison with the annual environmental standards of China (35 μg m−3). Moreover, during cold seasons the north regions have values twice higher than this limit. Thus, to fulfil these standards the governmental mitigation measures need to be strongly reinforced in order to optimize the daily living energy consumption, primarily in the north regions of China and during the winter periods. •Long trends of PM2.5 concentrations were investigated in 5 Chinese megacities.•PM2.5 have decreased mostly during warmer seasons.•Highest PM2.5 are usually observed during evening hours and winter seasons.•PM2.5 decreased but values are still too high in comparison with Chinese standards.•New measures are needed namely during winter and in the north Chinese regions.Document Type:A ...

The formulation of policies requires the selection and configuration of effective and acceptable courses of action to reach explicit goals. A one-size-fits-all policy is unlikely to achieve the desired goals; as a result, the identification of a suite of alternative policies, together with clear indications of their trade-offs, is crucial to accommodate the diversity of stakeholders’ preferences. At present, the formulation of transport policies is done manually; this fact, together with the size of the space of possible policies, results in a large part of that space being left unexplored. A six-step framework to explore the space of alternative transport policies in order to achieve environmental targets is proposed. The process starts with a user-defined set of specific policy measures, using them as building blocks in the generation of alternative policy packages, clusters and future images according to the user's preferences and goals. The analysis framework is based on the visioning and backcasting approach used in the VIBAT report [Banister, D., & Hickman, R. (2006a). Visioning and backcasting for UK transport policy (VIBAT) project. Department for Transport's Horizons Research Programme 2004/06. The Bartlett school of planning and Halcrow Group Ltd. Retrieved 1/18/2008 http://www.ucl.ac.uk/∼ucft696/vibat2.html]. The framework is being implemented as a prototype decision support system around a case study: the formulation and analysis of policies required to achieve CO2 emission targets for the transport sector in the UK. Important insights on how to develop the framework have also been elicited from engineering design. The goal is to accelerate the task of policy-making and improve the effectiveness of the resulting policies. The proposed method and computer implementation is fundamentally different from the tools commonly used in the transport sector and is intended to assist (not replace) transport policy makers, and complement (not substitute nor compete with) existing mathematical modelling tools. This research constitutes the first step towards the development of a general family of computer-based systems that support the design of policies to achieve environmental targets—not only for transport, but also for other sectors such as energy and water.

Abstract Sustainable development needs social, economic, energy and environmental sustainability. We propose a model to minimize the total cost consisting of economic cost of pollution control equipment, health cost because of pollutants emissions. We developed a Mixed Integer Non Linear Programming (MINLP) based model for selection of optimal air pollution control strategy. The model considers multiple pollutants, multiple emission sources and multiple control equipments. Constraints like budget and efficiency of control equipment are included in the model. Affect of emission norms on total cost is discussed. The efficacy of the proposed model is explained by considering simulation case studies of a typical cement plant and a thermal power plant. Keywords: sustainable development, economic cost, environmental cost, mixed integer non linear programming, optimization.

Ruby has a lot of standard libraries from Ruby 1.8. I promote them democratically with GitHub today via default and bundled gems. So, I'm working to extract them for Ruby 3.4 continuously and future versions. It's long journey for me. After that, some versions may suddenly happen LoadError at require when running bundle exec or bin/rails, for example matrix or net-smtp. We need to learn what's difference default/bundled gems with standard libraries. In this presentation, I will introduce what's the difficult to extract bundled gems from default gems and the details of the functionality that Ruby's require and bundle exec with default/bundled gems. You can learn how handle your issue about standard libraries.

Are you wondering why everyone is talking about the Flutterwave scandal? You’re not alone! It’s been in the news a lot. We’re going to tell you all about the Flutterwave Scandal in a way that’s easy to get. Keep reading, because we’re going to share the whole story with you. The company Flutterwave is headquartered in San Francisco, California, United States. In 2016, Iyinoluwa Aboyeji, Olugbenga Agboola, and Adeleke Adekoya established Flutterwave. It offers a payment infrastructure to international merchants and payment service providers throughout Africa. The company operates in various African countries including Nigeria, Kenya, Uganda, Ghana, South Africa, and others. They focus on digital payments, helping businesses accept and process payments on various channels like the web, mobile, ATM, and POS. Recently, they’ve been in the news due to allegations of misconduct within the company, which has affected their reputation and value. Flutterwave is an essential player in the African fintech landscape, aiming to drive growth for banks and businesses through digital payment solutions. The Flutterwave scandal involves allegations of misconduct and inappropriate behaviour towards female employees by the company’s co-founder and CEO, Olugbenga Agboola. Reports have surfaced from both current and former employees about bullying, intimidation, and sexual harassment at work. The allegations of inappropriate behaviour towards female employees at Flutterwave, specifically involving the CEO Olugbenga Agboola, were brought to public attention in April 2022.This was when Clara Wanjiku Odero, an ex-employee and current CEO of Credrails, published a Medium post and a series of tweets on April 4, 2022, accusing Flutterwave and Agboola of bullying. These allegations were part of a broader range of misconduct claims that surfaced around the same time The reasons behind the scandal are rooted in accusations of unethical behavior within the company. The allegations suggest a workplace culture that allowed for misconduct and failed to protect employees from harassment and intimidation. Specifically, the Flutterwave scandal refers to the series of events where the CEO was accused of engaging in improper conduct with female colleagues. This led to a broader investigation into the company’s practices and raised serious concerns about the fintech’s corporate governance. The scandal had significant repercussions, including a drop in the company’s stock price and a loss of trust among customers and partners. The trust that customers and investors had in Flutterwave was greatly damaged. People started to doubt the company’s integrity and whether their money and personal information were safe. Market Impact The scandal shook the entire fintech market. Flutterwave’s competitors saw this as an opportunity and started to attract customers who were leaving Flutterwave.
