  3. 3. What is the Church? •The Church is defined by the Greek as ecclesia, which means a grouping or assembly of people.
  4. 4. The word Church can also mean Kyriake oikia, meaning “the family of the Lord.”
  5. 5. Church is a gathering
  6. 6. The Church is the sign and instrument of the saving union between God and humanity.
  7. 7. Sacraments are visible signs of God’s invisible grace, instituted by Christ, for our sanctification.
  8. 8. Why is the Church important? •The Church is the extension of Jesus Incarnation among human beings, to create the great family of God's Children inside Him.
  9. 9. Why is the Church a Mystery? For it is a Trinitarian Church.
  10. 10. Sin has dispersed mankind since its origin, it broke the union and communion between human beings and God.
  11. 11. Christ spoke of the necessity of joining the Church through Baptism
  12. 12. • In the Gospel of John, Jesus said, “No one can enter the kingdom of God without being born of water and Spirit” (3:5).
  13. 13. We see the reality of the Church in people gathered for the Eucharist.
  14. 14. Through Jesus Christ He established the new and everlasting covenant.
  15. 15. •The Church has the obligation to proclaim truth to the world, an obligation that inspires and gives life to the Church’s missionary activities
  16. 16. •At the moment of consecration, the bread and wine become the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ.
  17. 17. “Through him, with him, in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory and honour is yours, almighty Father, forever and ever.”
  18. 18. Grace The Church depends completely on God’s grace to be holy. Grace is God’s unmerited favor. Grace is divine assistance.
  19. 19. • Christ instructed his disciples to forgive sins. • Forgiveness cannot be seen but must be accepted in faith. • Because sin is an offense against God, only God can forgive it.
  20. 20. The Church sanctifies, it is natural that she embraces sinners.
  21. 21. God calls us to be holy. • To be holy is simply to live as someone who belongs to God, living by the vision of the Kingdom of God. • Without the presence of the Holy Spirit, we cannot know God.
  22. 22. The visible elements of the Church are meant to guide us to an understanding of, and belief in, the invisible (spiritual) elements of the Church, from the sign to the thing signified, from the Sacraments to the mysteries.
  23. 23. "The Church, in Christ, is like a sacrament - a sign and instrument, that is, of communion with God and of unity among all men.''
  24. 24. So how exactly does God reveal Himself in the Church? •God continues to manifest Himself today through the Holy Spirit in the Church
  25. 25. He is present in the Church’s preaching of the truth of Sacred Scriptures, in its witness of loving service, and through the celebration of its Christ-given sacraments.
