British vs hollywood film industries
1. British Vs Hollywood Film Industries.
In Today’s blog I will be talking about the British film industry and Hollywood Film industry.
To make things easier I will be comparing ‘Attack the Block’ which is a British film with the
Hollywood movie ‘Super8’ which are both science fiction.
Over the past few years It has been shown that British films have higher Ratings. The
Average critic’s score for Hollywood films is 5 out of 10. However the average critic’s score
for low budget British films is 6.5 out of 10. This proves the point of British films getting
higher ratings. However this does not apply to my chosen films. ‘Attack The Block’ had
gotten 6.6 out of 10 rating as to ‘Super8’ which had a rating of 7.1.
Attack The Block is a Comedy, Action and science fiction film about a group of teenagers in
South London trying to save their block from an Alien invasion. This movie had an estimated
budget of $13,000,000, which is approximately £7,734,826. To Create the Alien monsters
they used CGI (convergence) which is Computer generated Imagery. Which they had spent a
lot of the money on creating the computer graphics . To promote this film it was shown on
352 screens in the UK and 8 screens in the USA. Which then was sold on DVD, Blue-ray DVD,
they also sold soundtracks and game. This movie has a Gross of $126,975,169.
Super8 is a Mystery, Science fiction and Horror film. Which is about a group of friends in
1979 who were making a super 8 movie and were interrupted by a chaotic train crash. Who
then suspect it was not an accident. Not long after, unusual disappearances and inexplicable
events occurred. This made the group of friends continue investigating. Super8 had a higher
budget for the making of this film which was $50,000,000, which is approximately £29.781,
404. Both movies I have chosen use CGI when creating he film. Which plays a huge part in
the film. To promote this film Super8 had created a commercial which was a success
VS
2. grossing some $260 million against a $50 million budget. The film was also release on DVD
and Blue-Ray.
I believe that although Hollywood has more money to spend on creating the films, they use
it less wisely. Whereas the British film industry makes use of the money they already have.
They use the money wisely. This is why British films have a higher average rating than
Hollywood movies. The critics agree on the quality of the film rather than the actual film
itself. Hollywood are more about business and finance whereas the UK are about the arts of
the films however according to David Cameron that had to change.
After doing research I had found this article which proves David Cameron is more about the
business. He said
"Our role, and that of the BFI, should be to support the sector in becoming even more dynamic
and entrepreneurial, helping UK producers to make commercially successful pictures that rival
the quality and impact of the best international productions.
"Just as the British Film Commission has played a crucial role in attracting the biggest and best
international studios to produce their films here, so we must incentivise UK producers to chase
new markets both here and overseas."
David Cameron’s opinion is very money driven; he wants the business to be bigger.
In Los Angeles Politics and Hollywood have a lot in common. Fred Thompson had made
quite a mark for himself in both. He said
‘It’s about communication in both areas,’ He is the only man who can say he served eight
years in the U.S. Senate and six on ‘Law and Order’, who can claim roles in the senate
Watergate hearings and ‘Die Hard II’ and the 2008 Republican presidential campaign and
‘’Cape Fear’’
Thompson also says ‘’You’re trying to make an impression upon an audience,’’. He also
mentioned ‘’In the entertainment world, you are trying to entertain, and in the political
world you are shooting with real bullets and have to deal with important issues. But the
3. similarity is the process of getting people’s attention and evoking the sentiment and emotion
that you are trying to.’’
Quite a few of British films are second only to the most successful blockbusters. But they
can’t build on their popularity because all the screens have been contracted out by
Hollywood.
