Ethics show and tell 1

  1. The Future of Aquaculture Presented by Zach Hanson
  2. Recent Issues  Sources says oceans levels of popular fish are depleting at a high level.  90% of worlds fisheries are deemed maxed out and or overexploited.  Overfishing and high demand for fish products to blame for shortage.
  3. What is Aquaculture?  Aquaculture is the farming, raising, and harvesting of fish and shellfish.  Aquaculture can be done in lakes, rivers, ponds, streams, and saltwater.  The fish and shellfish produced can be used for food, pharmaceutical, nutritional, and biotechnology products.
  4. Benefits of Aquaculture  Boost in aquaculture industry.  Influx of industry related jobs.  No increase of fishing on wild fish species.  Answer to shortage of wanted fish.
  5. Negative Effects of Aquaculture  Many popular wanted fish that would be produced (salmon, tuna, bass, etc.) require the harvesting of other fish for feed. This would result in a change in the balance of the ecosystem.  Risk of fish being raised in tight, inhumane conditions.  Risk of bacteria and parasites being spread through mass production of fish.

  7. Questions  Is this a good answer to the increase in demand for fish and decrease in supply for fish?  Do the benefits outweigh the negative effects?  Are their similar situations in the history of business that you can compare to this for the right answer?  Is this more of a business ethics issue or a environmentalist issue?
