3. Unity means single idea. In other words, unity
in writing is the connection all ideas to a single
topic. In a paragraph all ideas should related to
the main idea and supporting ideas.
For example, if your paragraph is about
advantages of nuclear power, discuss only that.
Dont discuss about the disadvantages.
4. One way to keep unity in a paragraph to edit
the outline for ideas that are not relevant to the
main idea.
After that you should re-read and eliminated
the ideas that not related the main idea or
supporting idea.
5. Chinese food is popular in the world. Most
people would agree that Chinese cuisine is
especially flavorful, varied, and helpful. Not
even the best French chefs can equal the
imaginative combination of ingredents and
delicious blend of flavors of Chinese cooking.
Japanese food is more beautiful to look at than
Chinese food.
6. Instruction:
1. Locate and underline the topic sentence in
paragraph
2. Find the sentence(s) that do not support the
topic sentence and cross them out.
7. Zoos are popular with all children. They are able
to see examples of wildllife preserves in Africa,
the animals wander about freely without fear of
being captured. Perhaps the favourite spot in
the zoo is elephant cage. There elephants
entertain the children by spaying themselves
with their trunks and doing variouos trick. The
children are especially delighted when
elephants take peanuts from them from its
trunk.a
8. Tourism in the State of Hawaii’s leading
industry. Every year, some 3.2 million tourists
visit the islands. During the popular winter
months, a planeload or shipload of tourists
arrives every fifteen minutes. New hotels, new
resorts and new restaurants are being built
every year to accomodate the increasing
numbers of visitors. Sugar cane and pinneaples
are also important industries in Hawaii.
9. Coherence is related to unity. Ideas that are
arranged in a clear and logical way are
coherent. The purpose of coherence is to make
the readers can easily understand the main
idea.
10. There are 2 main ways to achieve coherence:
1. Coherence from transition signals
(To show how idea is related to the next part)
2. Coherence from logical order
(To arrange sentence in some kind of logical)
11. Transation signals are the words or phrases that
connect the idea in one sentence with the idea
in another sentence.
The function to make paragraph smooth so the
reader doesnt have problem understanding the
writers ideas.

13. In addition to using transitional signals, a
second way to achieve coherence is to arrange
your sentences in some kind of lical order.
There are two most common kinds of logical
order:
1. Chronological order
2. Order of importance
14. Chronological order is the way of organizing
the ideas in the paragraph in the order of their
occurrence in time. Chronological order is not
only used for historical events but it is also used
in business, science and engineering to explain
the process and procedures.
15. There are two keys to writing a good
chronological paragraph:
1. Discuss the events(in a history) or the
steps(in a process) in the order in which they
occur.
2. Use chronological transition signals to
indicate the sequence of events or steps.
