We are currently seeking a talented, energetic, and highly motivated postdoctoral scientist in the Department of
Molecular and Human Genetics at Baylor College of Medicine. The Elsea Lab is focused on the molecular and
biochemical basis of rare diseases involving intellectual disability, autism spectrum disorder, seizures, and
neurodevelopment.

This funded project is focused on the study of Smith-Magenis syndrome, a neurodevelopmental disorder that
involves intellectual disability, sleep disturbance, behavioral problems, and obesity. The goals of the project are
focused toward therapeutic intervention, including gene therapy and small molecule drug screening. The project
will include the development of drug screening assays, including the analysis of induced pluripotent stem cells
and neural progenitor cells, and development and analysis of gene therapy-based treatment to improve
molecular and phenotypic outcomes.
Required skills:
• Excellent oral and written communication skills
• Experience with cell culture, gene expression studies/transcriptomics, cloning, general
molecular biology techniques, and statistics
• Must be able to work independently and within a team
Desired skills:
• Previous experience with culturing of stem cells
• Experience with mouse husbandry and behavior
• Excellent organizational and project management skills
Duties include:
• Study design, data collection, processing and analysis
• Assist faculty researchers and other collaborators in planning and designing research
experiments; establishing priorities and recommending schedules, time tables and costs
• Presentation of project results to internal and external parties
• Project requires work with mice
• Performs statistical analyses, including selecting the appropriate analysis procedure, setting
up data for analysis, judging validity and reliability of data, designing and writing programs
to perform analyses, and producing written reports on the result of the analyses
• Effectively use available technology to facilitate the success of the project
• Liaison with other internal groups, outside collaborators, and others to ensure success of
project
• Engaged writing of publications and reports
• May be responsible for training staff, graduate assistants, or student employees
• Design and implement research protocols; design safety procedures; adapt new procedures,
methods or instrumentation relative to research procedures
• Oversee media preparation, animal maintenance and equipment maintenance; quality
control analysis of reagents
• Collect, prepare and analyze research data; keep a detailed notebook summarizing
experiments and recording research data; maintain computer database of research data;
tabulate and display data for presentation in research conferences and for manuscript
preparation; use graphics and statistical software to analyze and present data
2. • Supervise other personnel in the laboratory to coordinate research efforts for increased
efficiency; participate in training of fellows, residents, students and volunteer workers as
needed or requested by the PI
• Search pertinent scientific literature as needed
• Assist with ordering and procurement of supplies and equipment and with general
maintenance of laboratory
