BREEDING METHODS OF SWEET POTATO
• 1. HYBRIDIZATION
• 2 INTRA VARITAL HYBRIDIZATION
• PROPOGATION- Sweet potato is cultivated by vegetative
propagation. Growers take stem cuttings from the vines, which
then root and form new storage roots. In some colder climates,
where vines do not develop well, producers will plant roots.
Botanical seed is used in breeding programs

PROPOGATION OF CASSAVA
• CASAVA propagated from parts of the stem known as cuttings,
especially in commercial plantations. The crop can also be
propagated by seeds under natural conditions as well as
artificial hybridization in breeding programs

PROPOGATION OF COLOCASIA
• To propagate colocasia by division of the tubers, there are 3
main options: Slice off the top couple of centimetres of the
tuber, where the leaf stalks emerge, and replant this to grow
into a new plant. Lift the plant and take off the small suckers of
offset tubers around the main tuber, and grow these on to
replant

PROPOGATION OF ELEPHANT FOOT YAM
IT IS USUALLY PROPOGATED THROUH OFFSETS OF YAM
THESE MINIATURE TUBERS THAT GROW OUT OF PARENT
CORMS ARE BUDS OF DAUGHTER CORMS.

PROPOGATION OF ARTICHOKES
• ARTICHOKES CAN BE PROPOGATED BY 3 WAYS-
1.By Seed.
2.By Offshoots – Side shoots.
3.By Root crown division (underground shoots with apical and
lateral buds, called “ovoli”)
