COMPARISON OF STYLE PRINCIPLES BETWEEN ANDROID AND APPLE WATCHES
Mostly the style principles for Android and Apple watches differ as good as not.
The biggest difference is probably how to navigate through apps. In the case of Android watches, this happens
by swiping horizontal or vertical (Card-based) while on the apple watch hierarchical navigation are also possible
which makes it easier to extend the app later.
In addition, the colours are different. Because the background on the Apple Watch is always Black, not all
colours are well suited.

SMARTWATCH ANDROID
> Notifications: Can be pushed to wearable from
connected device or can be contextual (genereated
locally on the device).
> Layout: Largely the same like on the Apple watch but
with one important thing that should be noted.
Some Android devices have round screens while
Apple watches always have a circle screen.

> Notifications: “Short looks” tell the user about what
the notification is and which app has sent it. “Long
looks” appear after that and give more options and
also Interaction possibilities.
> Layout: there are 6 basic rules.
1. Avoid displaying too much information in one
screen.
2. Create visual groupings to help people find the
information they want.
3. Use the full width of the screen.
4. Use a menu to replace buttons when appropriate.
5. Limit the number of side-by-side controls in your
interface.
6. Left align elements.

UI BEHAVIOUR CHANGES
A good example of changes to the UI causing problems is the latest Android update.
The user now has to swipe to the right to display the menu, before that he just had to tap once.
Such changes may cause problems for some users.

tablet for most of their functionality.
> Wearables also suffer from a perception problem. Consumers still don't 

understand how a wearable might really benefit them.
> Barriers still persist, and these will inhibit consumer wearables adoption
and usage. Smartwatches in particular must become standalone
computing devices with more robust functionality for the devices to
become mainstream. Other barriers include small screen size, clunky
style, limited battery life, and lack of a "killer app" that can drive adoption.

Beacons - What are they? Beacons are wireless devices utilising Bluetooth 4.0 (BLE- Bluetooth Low
Energy) protocol to broadcast tiny radio signals around them, allowing Bluetooth 4.0 enabled
devices to “talk” to them within proximity of three inches (7,5 cm) to 150 feet (45 meter). There is no
doubt that Bluetooth Low Energy enabled sensors will open up millions of possibilities for
developers and designers to create truly innovate experiences and services.

Behavioural economics appears in three levels:
1. the app itself aims to influence people’s water drinking behaviour for their own good
2. notifications are included that use specific wording working with behavioural insights
3. within a notification, information is being provided of how people can nudge themselves to drink
more water

FUTURE STUDIES: MAKING USE OF TECHNOLOGY AND BEHAVIOURAL ECONOMICS

Main research question (first degree): Is the app useful to get employees to watch out for their hydration levels?
Future future study (second degree):
Does the app actually have an effect on work quantity/quality?
Based on past research it can be assumed that drinking enough water is essential for cognitive functioning, which
in turn is relevant for knowledge workers (quantity/quality).
Questions that generally interest us:
• Is there a difference between smartwatch owners and non smartwatch owners reacting to the app?
• Is there a difference in using beacons or not?
• How is acceptance of (different kinds of) notifications? i.e. educational vs. entertaining

The biggest difference is probably how to navigate through apps. In the case of Android watches, this happens by swiping horizontal or vertical (Card-based) while on the apple watch hierarchical navigation are also possible which makes it easier to extend the app later. In addition, the colours are different. Beacons are wireless devices utilising Bluetooth 4.0 (BLE- Bluetooth Low Energy) protocol to broadcast tiny radio signals around them, allowing Bluetooth 4.0 enabled devices to “talk” to them within proximity of three inches (7,5 cm) to 150 feet (45 meter). There is no doubt that Bluetooth Low Energy enabled sensors will open up millions of possibilities for developers and designers to create truly innovate experiences and services. Future future study (second degree): Does the app actually have an effect on work quantity/quality? Based on past research it can be assumed that drinking enough water is essential for cognitive functioning, which in turn is relevant for knowledge workers (quantity/quality). Questions that generally interest us: • Is there a difference between smartwatch owners and non smartwatch owners reacting to the app? • Is there a difference in using beacons or not? • How is acceptance of (different kinds of) notifications? i.e. educational vs. entertaining
