FALL 2017 ISSUE / ANNUAL REPORT
2. 2017 Parish Appeal
September 23, 24 and September 30, October 1
Xavier High School is preparing students to live their Faith
and become the futures leaders of the Catholic Church.
One of the missions of the Catholic Church is to educate
and foster our children to become disciples of God.
Catholic schools provide a faith-centered environment
that encourages students to grow spiritually, intellectually,
and to serve others. It is with your prayers and financial
support that Xavier High School can continue to develop
each person’s ability to grow in their faith, serve others and
become the future leaders of the Catholic Church.
The Annual Parish Appeal is an opportunity for
parishioners, current parents, past parents, alumni and
friends to make a financial contribution to support Xavier
High School. It is our faith community that keeps Xavier
strong. It is our faith community that helps make a Catholic
secondary education affordable for our families. Please
prayerfully consider making a gift to the 2017 Parish
Appeal. Your generous gifts provide critical, unrestricted
operating funds that allow us to maintain a balanced
budget, minimize tuition increases, and most importantly
support our mission to develop the total person in a
Catholic environment.
Xavier Foundation will kickoff the 2017 Parish Appeal on
September 23 and 24. Campaign Chairs Ron (R72) and
Peggy Detweiler of St. Joseph Parish and Blaine and
Marlana Miller of St. Jude Parish will lead the community-
wide effort to raise $515,000 for Xavier High School.
Pledge cards will be available before and after all
Masses the weekends of September 23, 24 and
September 30 and October 1. Volunteer leadership from
all eleven metro parishes will join them. Thanks to the
following parish members who have agreed to be chairs
at their parishes: All Saints: Brad and Kay (Johannes)
Hess (R78), PJ (R86) and Malora Cosgrove; Immaculate
Conception: Matt and Dana Pieper, Edward and Karen
Pisney; St. Elizabeth Ann Seton: Jeff and Lynn Kramer,
Mike and Sara Albert; St. John XXIII: Mark and Karla
Guastaferro, Wesley and Ann (Jaeger) Howard (L86); St.
Joseph: Bob and Julie Schmitt, John and Angela Pacha;
St. Jude: Jay and Donna Fields, Dave and Jenn Olson; St.
Ludmila: Justin and Jennifer Jordebrek, Scott and Renee
(Coleman) Thompson (L83); St. Matthew: Denny (R73)
and Diane (Rozek) Flynn (R77), Tony and Ellen Alessio; St.
Patrick: Trent and Heather (McCauley) Buenzow (L96,)
Jason (R90) and Jeannie (Schulte) Klein(L91); St. Pius X:
Pete and Molly Iversen, Chris (R90) and Angie (Nelson)
Cummings (R90); St. Wenceslaus: Dave Martin, David (L87)
and Julie (Lefebure) Skala (L89). The Parish Appeal would
not be successful without the support of our pastors and
well over 200 volunteers from all eleven parishes.
The Xavier Foundation Board of Directors and staff thank
you for your prayers and financial support and ask you
to prayerfully consider making a gift to the 2017 Parish
Appeal. If you have any questions, please call Lynn Jump,

Xavier Foundation Parish Appeal
Reflections of Faith
& Xavier’s Impact
By supporting the Xavier Foundation’s 2017 Parish
Appeal, you are investing in the future leaders of the
Church. Among other faith formation activities, Xavier
promotes vocational awareness, and many young alumni
have answered their calling to directly serve the Church
in religious and lay capacities. Hear from some of these
young alumni about how Xavier impacted them in their
decision to serve in their respective ministries:
“Going to a Catholic school my entire life
was very helpful for my spiritual life. At
Xavier, we had a safe, yet challenging
environment where we can ask the tough
questions that help us grow in our faith:
What do we believe as Catholics? How do
we develop that belief? Does God have a plan
for me? He most certainly does. I am currently
on this path of discovery right now, as I journey
towards the priesthood. The classes offered, the
prayer experiences, and the talented, faith-filled
faculty and staff at Xavier High School provided the
ground work for a healthy, integrated, and fruitful
adult faith life.”
- Jacob Rouse (X09)
Newly-Ordained to the Transitional Diaconate (May 2017)
Archdiocese of Dubuque
“During my time at Xavier, I
encountered true witnesses of
His love in Xavier’s teachers,
classmates, and staff. Their wit-
ness opened me to encounter
Jesus’ immense love for me
personally and encouraged me
to give myself totally to Him as
a consecrated religious.”
- Sister Louis Marie Zogg (X05)
Dominican Sisters of Mary Mother of
the Eucharist | Science Teacher
“Looking back, I can see
how Xavier sparked my
desire to provide faith
formation opportunities for
others.”

On August 16, 2017 the Xavier Foundation hosted its
annual donor recognition reception honoring members
of the Archbishop Circle, Heritage Society, Endowed
Scholarship Circle, Cornerstone Society, and Student
Tuition Organization (STO) donors.
Archbishop Michael Jackels, esteemed guest and
member of the Xavier Foundation Board of Directors,
personally recognized the donors and expressed his deep
appreciation for their commitment to Catholic Education.
Foundation board chair, Ellen Bouchard, facilitated the
evening’s program which was highlighted by an address
from Archbishop Jackels (pictured top left) and a moving
reflection by Xavier alumnus, Zach Gignac (X09) (pictured
top right). Gignac, who currently serves as the Music
Coordinator for St. Jude parish, commented on how
the seeds to serve were sewn during his time at Xavier,
specifically from his involvement in the XHS instrumental
and vocal music programs. Gignac then performed a
rendition of “All Good Gifts” on the piano for those who
were gathered.
Additionally, Xavier principal, Tom Keating, offered his
thanks to donors, noting that Xavier would not be able to
have the impact it does without their critical support.
Honored Donors/Societies:
The Heritage Society was established to recognize donors
who share this commitment by including the Xavier
Foundation in their estate or deferred giving plans
through a bequest in their will, as a beneficiary in an
insurance policy or retirement plan, or through a trust or
charitable gift annuity.
The Archbishop’s Circle was initiated to recognize donors
who have demonstrated their commitment to Xavier High
School by supporting the Foundation with generous
unrestricted gifts of $1,000 or more during the
Foundation’s fiscal year. Gifts at this level help support the
Foundation’s mission and help Xavier plan for the future.
Each year the Foundation acknowledges the honor roll of
Archbishop’s Circle members based on gifts and payments
given to the annual appeals during the fiscal year.
Members of the Endowed Scholarship Circle have created
an endowed scholarship with a minimum gift of $10,000
to help provide students with tuition assistance for
generations to come.
School Tuition Organization (STO) donors contributed to
the Archdiocese of Dubuque’s STO and designated their
gift to be directed to Xavier High School families.
The Cornerstone Society, which was started in 2015,
recognizes donors who have given gifts totaling $100,000
or more to the Xavier Foundation and/or the former
Regis-LaSalle Foundation during their lifetime.

Congratulations to Kurt Warner (R89) on being
inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame!
Warner is the only native Iowan to be inducted
into the Hall of Fame. The enshrinement cer-
emony was held on August 5, 2017.
Warner appeared in three Super Bowls: XXXIV
(2000), XXXVI (2002) & XLIII (2009) — he was
named the Super Bowl MVP in 2000 as the
quarterback of the St. Louis Rams when the
Rams defeated the Tennessee Titans 23-16.
Warner was originally signed by the Green Bay
Packers as an undrafted free agent in 1994 af-
ter playing college football at the University of
Northern Iowa. Warner went on to be consid-
ered the best undrafted NFL player of all time,
following a 12-year career regarded as one of
the greatest stories in NFL history.
During his senior season at Regis, Warner led
the Royals to a 7-2 record and an appearance
in the state playoffs after a six-year drought.
Warner also participated in the Iowa Shrine
Bowl following his senior season (in which he
threw the game-winning two-point conversion).
Warner also excelled the academic arena as
an honor roll student and in basketball where
he earned all-state honors and led the team in
scoring and rebounds.
Also in attendance at the Hall of Fame en-
shrinement ceremony was Warner’s former
high school coach, Dick Breitbach, who Warner
has cited as his “favorite teacher” due to his
positive and lasting impact.
Warner (R89)
is in the
Hall of Fame!
