Working On A Dream...
As we enter our school’s third decade, I am honored and blessed to serve as Xavier’s first
president following fourteen years as principal. This exciting change in our leadership model
coincides with an important milestone, Xavier’s 20th anniversary. It is fitting that we cel-
ebrate all that has been accomplished in those first twenty years as well as look forward to
what the next twenty will bring.
In just twenty years, through the commitment of our pastors and parishes, the dedication
of an outstanding faculty and staff, the support of our families, friends, alumni and Catholic
community and the overwhelming generosity of our benefactors, Xavier has established itself
as a premier Catholic High School, committed to those we serve. Our spiritual programs are
deep and meaningful. Our academic programs challenge and prepare our students for what
lies ahead after high school. Our support programs ensure that all students can be success-
ful. Our activities programs provide opportunities for students to develop their talents and
year after year have proven to be some of the best in the state. Our service to the commu-
nity has impacted our world in a positive way.
While we are truly proud of what has transpired in our first two decades, we still adhere to
the approach that we, “either get better or worse; we never stay the same.” We will con-
tinue to find ways to provide our students with an exceptional Catholic school experience!
Twenty years ago the “dream” was to create in the Cedar Rapids/Marion area a Catholic
High School which could stand on the shoulders of Immaculate Conception High School, Mt.
Mercy Academy, St. Patrick’s (CR) High School, St. Patrick’s (Fairfax) High School, St. Wenc-
eslaus High School, LaSalle High School and Regis High School and continue the outstand-
ing tradition of Catholic secondary education in our community!
The mission of Xavier High School is to “develop the total person in a Catholic environ-
ment.” To that end, we work tirelessly to lead our students to an understanding of and
relationship with Jesus Christ. Through this relationship we challenge them to be the hands,
feet, eyes and heart of Christ in the world. Our “Saints” will leave Xavier and enter college,
careers, religious life or serve or country in the military, law enforcement, fire and rescue and
other service endeavors. Regardless of which direction they go, it will be the light they bring
to this world which will be the true measure of our success.
I look forward to working with all of you as we embark on this next exciting leg of Xavier’s
journey!

What a great start we have had to the 2018-19 school year!
We began the year reflecting on the work and success since
Xavier’s beginning embracing our theme “Celebrating 20
years of God’s grace.” While this year we celebrate 20 years
of Xavier’s history, in many ways this year is full of new be-
ginnings. As I begin my role as Xavier’s new principal, I am
excited to be a part of the path we are paving as we head
into our next 20 years.
We have new beginnings in our faculty. We welcome Dr.
Bryan Appley in Theology, Mr. Patrick Flanagan in English,
Mr. Jason Rittmiller in Art, and Mr. Reggie Schulte in Math.
We also welcome Mr. Gerry Miller, our new Associate Prin-
cipal. When you see them, I invite you to introduce your-
selves to the newest members of our team!
We have new beginnings in our school. Teachers have in-
vested time and energy to find what is best for students and
helped to make impactful changes. From our first school-
wide Catholic Conference (XCEED) providing a meaningful
faith opportunity to block scheduling to daily Xcel Hour sup-
porting academics, the changes create a feeling of newness
in school this year.
We have new beginnings in our students. We welcome the
class of 2022 this year as freshmen and the class of 2019 as
leaders. Each and every Saint has been challenged to lead
in faith, in service, in the classroom, on the field and on the
stage as they define what it means to be a Xavier Saint and
proudly say #WeAreXavier.
Together, we are all part of a faith-filled and inspiring com-
munity who, when working together, are unstoppable. I am
excited to partner with you as we challenge and support our
Saints on their journey!

Team Tone!
The Walk to End Alzheimer’s is this Saturday at the McGrath Amphitheatre
here in Cedar Rapids. Registration is at 8:30 a.m. with a ceremony at 9:30 and
walk beginning at 10 a.m. A fee or donation is not required to walk, only a
registration. All are invited as we take steps, hand-in-hand, to a world without
Alzheimer’s. Head to ALZ.org to register for the walk today!
There will also be a “Team Tone” Alzheimer’s/Dementia Awareness Night this
Friday night (9/28) at our home football game. All are asked to participate in
our “Blue Out” and to wear blue “Team Tone” shirts if you ordered one. Please
join us as we raise awareness and fight these diseases a community of faith.
Team Tone shirts will be available for pick up later this week at Xavier.
Tony Moeder, father of Kyle (XHS senior), Mary Kate (XHS freshman), and
husband of Kathy (XHS Dancing with the Saints 2017) was diagnosed with
Frontotemporal Dementia (FTD) January 2017 at the age of 45. FTD affects
personality, behavior, communication, and physical abilities. The fast progres-
sion of the disease has taken away Tony’s ability to work and drive. Team Tone
shirts are a great way to show support for the Moeder family and all who are
facing this disease. Proceeds from the Team Tone shirt sales will be donated to
the Alzheimer’s Association in Tony’s name. Nearly 900 shirts were ordered!

5. 2018 Parish Appeal
The Xavier Foundation 2018 Parish Appeal began this past
weekend in our supporting parishes. As we Celebrate God’s
grace during Xavier’s 20th year, this campaign provides a criti-
cal source of income to help with Xavier’s bond repayment pro-
gram and tuition assistance. Without this support, there would
simply be no Xavier. The campaign will continue this coming
weekend in our parishes.
We thank our 2018 Parish Appeal Chairs, Blaine & Marlana
Miller of St. Jude Parish and Richard & Kathy Curphey of St.
Matthew Parish, who will lead this community-wide effort to
raise $525,000 for Xavier High School! We also say thank you

Our department is committed each and everyday to reaching out in
the love of Christ to students and faculty. Please join us for Home-
coming Mass on Oct. 3rd at 9:50 a.m. as we welcome back XHS
alumnus, Fr. Jacob Rouse (X09) who will celebrate with us! We also
invite you to join us every Friday morning (unless otherwise posted)
for 7 a.m. Mass in the chapel followed by adoration.

2018-2019 ALL-SCHOOL MASS SCHEDULE
RESPECT LIFE WEEK: OCT. 9-12
This is a week set aside to pay special attention to is-
sues of life, from conception to natural death. Specif-
ic activities will be announced each day of the week.
KAIROS
Kairos is a four day retreat attended by juniors and
led by a team of seniors and adults. The retreat is
held at a retreat house and aims to create an envi-
ronment away, a moment in “God’s time,” in which
participants may be awakened to the ever-present
love of God. Students who attend Kairos will be
absent from school on Friday. Adults can serve as
leaders and are encouraged to write letters to the
team and the retreatants. We will send out a list
of retreatants and leaders prior to the retreat. We
also ask teachers to understand that students are
not able to do any homework while they are on
the retreat, so giving them a break in this area is
greatly appreciated.

TEC
TEC is a three day retreat attended by seniors
from Xavier and other private and public schools
throughout the diocese. The retreat begins on
Saturday and ends on Monday. The students who
attend a TEC will be absent from school on Mon-
day. We are always looking for adults to assist
with TEC and there are many ways that you can
participate, from being a table leader to being on
the wheat team (which is responsible for details
and set up for the retreat). We also encourage
you to write letters of encouragement, “wheat let-
ters,” to the candidates and leaders of the retreat.
We will send out a list of retreatants prior to the
retreat.

XAVIER HOSTS FORUM
ON ABUSE CRISIS
A public forum on the Clergy Sexual Abuse Crisis will be held on
Tuesday, Oct, 2, 7:00-8:30 p.m., at the Xavier High School theatre.
Panelists will be present to lead a discussion, with opportunities to
express your questions, concerns, and feelings in a respectful man-
ner. All are invited to attend.

XCEED is a new school-wide conference for Grades 9-12. The
conference, held on September 26th, provided all Xavier students
the opportunity to hear from keynote speaker, Matt Fradd, attend
breakout “impact” sessions and end the day celebrating mass as a
Xavier Community.
This conference allowed students the opportunity to choose the
topics related to the Catholic faith they would like to hear more
about. XCEED also features parent sessions focusing on “parenting
the high school Catholic student.”
A special thank you to our guest speakers who joined us throughout
the day: Fr. Thom Hennen (St. Ambrose University), Anne Scherrman
(X15), Mitch Fick (X05), Zach Gignac (X09), Chris Mautino, Tony
Lavorata, Charity Hansel, and Sue May. Additionally, we thank our
faculty/staff presenters: Andy Umthun, Tracie Marshall (X02), Dr. Ja-
son Reed, Kellie Wagner, Jess Budde, Jaclyn (and Mark) Richmond,
Erica Ireland, Mike Goldsmith, Jenny (and Andy) Augustine (X11),
and Tom Keating. Finally, we thank Fr. Vu and XHS Campus Ministry
for their work to bring this event to life at Xavier!

Are More Anxious Than Ever
We’ve created an environment that fosters anxiety rather than resilience.

Amy Morin is a psychotherapist and the bestselling author
of 13 Things Mentally Strong Parents Don’t Do.
The New York Times recently published
an article called, “Why Are More American
Teenagers Than Ever Suffering From Severe
Anxiety?” The author, Benoit Denizet-Lewis,
chronicled several teens’ battle with anxiety
over the course of a few years.
The article questioned why we’re seeing
such a rise in anxiety in today’s youth. As a
psychotherapist, college lecturer, and author
of 13 Things Mentally Strong Parents Don’t
Do, I wholeheartedly agree that anxiety is a
widespread issue among adolescents. It’s the
most common reason people of all ages enter
my therapy office.
Some young people are overachieving perfec-
tionists with a crippling fear of failure. Others
worry so much about what their peers think of
them that they’re unable to function.
Some of them have endured rough circum-
stances throughout their young lives. But oth-
ers have stable families, supportive parents,
and plenty of resources.
I suspect the rise in anxiety reflects several
societal changes and cultural shifts we’ve seen
over the past couple of decades. Here are the
top 10 reasons why American teenagers are
more anxious than ever:
1. Electronics offer an unhealthy escape.
Constant access to digital devices lets kids
escape uncomfortable emotions like bore-
dom, loneliness, or sadness by immersing
themselves in video games when they were in
the car or by chatting on social media when
they were sent to their rooms.
And now we’re seeing what happen when
an entire generation spent their child-
hoods avoiding discomfort. Their electronics
replaced opportunities to develop mental
strength and they didn’t gain the coping skills
they need to handle everyday challenges.
2. Happiness is all the rage.
Happiness is emphasized so much in our
culture right now that some parents think it’s
their job to make their kids happy all the time.
When a child is sad, his parents cheer him up.
Or when he’s angry, they calm him down.
Kids grow up believing that if they don’t feel
happy around the clock, something must be
wrong. And that creates a lot of inner turmoil.
They don’t understand that it’s normal and
healthy to feel sad, frustrated, guilty, disap-
pointed, and angry sometimes too.
3. Parents are giving unrealistic praise.
Saying things like, “You’re the fastest runner
on the team,” or “You’re the smartest kid in
your grade,” doesn’t actually build self-es-
teem. Instead, it puts pressure on kids to live
up to their labels. That can lead to a crippling
fear of failure or rejection.
4. Parents are getting caught up in the
rat race.
Many parents have become like personal
assistants to their teenagers. They work hard
to ensure their teens can compete—they hire
tutors and private sports coaches and pay for
expensive SAT prep courses.
They make it their job to help their teens build
transcripts that will impress an Ivy League
school. And they send the message that their
teen must excel at everything in order to land
a coveted spot in a top college.
5. Kids aren’t learning emotional skills.
We emphasize academic preparation for life
and put little effort into teaching kids the
emotional skills they need to succeed. In fact,
a national survey of first-year college students
revealed that 60 percent of them feel emo-
tionally unprepared for college life.
Knowing how to manage your time, combat
stress, and take care of your feelings are key
components to living a good life. Without
healthy coping skills, it’s no wonder teens are
feeling anxious over everyday hassles.
6. Parents view themselves as protectors,
rather than guides.
Somewhere along the line, many parents
began believing their role is to help kids grow
up with as few emotional and physical scars as
possible. They became so overprotective that
their kids never practiced dealing with chal-
lenges on their own. Consequently, these kids
grew up to believe they’re too fragile to cope
with the realities of life.
7. Adults don’t know to help kids face
their fears the right way.
On one end of the spectrum, you’ll find par-
ents who push their kids too hard. They force
their children to do things that terrify them.
On the other end of the spectrum, you’ll find
parents who don’t push their kids at all. They
let their kids opt out of anything that sounds
anxiety-provoking.
Exposure is the best way to conquer fear but
only when it’s done incrementally. Without
practice, gentle nudging, and guidance, kids
never gain confidence that they can face their
fears head-on.
8. Parents are parenting out of guilt & fear.
Parenting stirs up uncomfortable emotions,
like guilt and fear. But rather than let them-
selves feel those emotions, many parents are
changing their parenting habits.
They don’t let their kids out of their sight be-
cause it stirs up their anxiety. Or, they feel so
guilty saying no to their kids that they back down
and give in. Consequently, they taught their kids
that uncomfortable emotions are intolerable.
9. Kids aren’t being given enough free time
to play.
While organized sports and clubs play an
important role in kids’ lives, adults make and
enforce the rules. Unstructured play teaches
kids vital skills, like how to manage disagree-
ments without an adult refereeing. And
solitary play teaches kids how to be alone with
their thoughts and how to be comfortable in
their own skin.
10. Family hierarchies are out of whack.
Although kids give off the impression they’d
like to be in charge, deep down they know
they aren’t capable of making good decisions.
They want their parents to be leaders—even
when there is dissension in the ranks. And
when the hierarchy gets muddled—or even
flipped upside down—kids’ anxiety skyrockets.
How to Address the Anxiety Epidemic
We’ve created an environment that fos-
ters anxiety, rather than resilience in young
people. And while you can’t prevent all
anxiety disorders—there’s definitely a genetic
component—we can do a better job of help-
ing kids build the mental muscle they need to
stay healthy.

SLEEP, IT DOES A BODY
GOOD!
Most adults in the U.S. get less sleep than needed and high
school students run a particularly high risk of sleep depriva-
tion due to erratic schedules. Our society is becoming more
sleep deprived due to our lifestyle choices. From morning
to night most Americans, including teens, feel pressured by
time commitments, such as school or work, extra-curricular
activities, family, friends and social obligations. Sleep is
often shortened in order to make time for other activities.
But sleep isn’t just a “time out” from daily life. It is an active
state important for renewing our mental and physical health
each day. Sleep deprivation can be the cause behind ex-
treme moodiness, poor performance in school and even lead
to lack of motivation and depression. Teens also have a high
risk of having car accidents because of falling asleep behind
the wheel. The National Sleep Foundation (www.sleepfoun-
dation.org) suggests 8 tips for teens regarding sleep.
1. Sleep is food for the brain. Get enough of it, and get it
when you need it. Even mild sleepiness can hurt your per-
formance—from taking exams to playing sports or video
games. Lack of sleep can make you look tired and feel
depressed, irritable, and angry.
2. Keep consistency in mind: Establish a regular bedtime
and wake time schedule, and maintain it during weekends
(as much as possible) and school vacations.
3. Learn how much sleep you need to function at your
best. You should awaken refreshed, not tired. Most ado-
lescents need between 8.5 and 9.25 hours of sleep each
night. Most teens get an average of 7.4 hours a night.
4. Get into bright light as soon as possible in the morn-
ing, but avoid it in the evening. The light helps to signal
the brain when it should wake up and when to prepare to
sleep.
5. Understand your circadian rhythm. Then try to maxi-
mize your schedule throughout the day according to
your internal clock. For example, to compensate for your
sleepy times participate in activities that are interactive
and avoid lecture classes or potentially unsafe activities
such as driving. Teenager’s natural circadian rhythm is to
stay up late and then sleep in.
6. Avoid all products with caffeine after mid-afternoon.
7. Relax before going to bed. Avoid heavy reading,
studying and computer games (i.e. Fortnite) within one
hour of going to bed. Don’t fall asleep with the television
on as the flickering light and stimulating content can in-
hibit restful sleep. Shut off cell phones.
8. Say no to all-nighters. Staying up late can cause chaos
to your sleep patterns and your ability to be alert the next
day…and beyond. Remember, the best thing you can do
to prepare for a test is to get plenty of sleep. All nighters
or late-night study sessions might seem to give you more
time to cram for your exam, but they are also likely to
drain your brainpower.

· Screening – we will perform a mini physical testing blood
pressure, temperature, hemoglobin, etc. to make sure it’s
safe for you to give
· Donation – your time in a donor bed is usually 10 minutes
or less!
· Refreshments – load up on as many cookies and snacks as
you’d like

Here’s a look at the new uniforms of the Xavier Marching Band. These
new uniforms were purchased through funds raised by Dancing with
the Saints: Season 3 and through allocations from the Xavier Booster
Club. While the uniforms were ordered last spring, fulfillment times
on marching band orders can be quite lengthy (up to 12 months). The
new uniforms arrived in time for the Marching Saints’ first competitions
of the season at the Linn-Mar and Marion Invitationals on September
22nd (the Saints placed second at Linn-Mar and third at Marion).
The new uniforms feature a navy/gray jacket with a silver “sash” and
embroidered halo cross logo on the left chest, white gauntlets with
navy and silver trim, navy bib trousers (gray for drum majors), and flat
top shako hat with tip dye French upright plumes (navy plume with
triple silver fleck for drum majors). Each uniform comes with a hard
case for the shako hat and garmet bag for the jacket/trousers.
Don’t miss the Marching Saints as they present their 2018 show, “Ameri-
cana: Music of the Melting Pot,” at halftime of our remaining home foot-
ball games on 9/28 and 10/5; the Five Seasons Invitational at Kingston
Stadium (9/29), the State Marching Band Festival at Kingston Stadium
(10/6); and the Metro Marching Band Classic at Linn-Mar Stadium (10/8).

14. Campus Improvement Update

We thank our families, students, coaches/directors, and
volunteers for bearing with us as we enter the home stretch
of several very necessary and substantial campus improve-
ment projects. Earlier this summer, a new main driveway was
installed in addition to new concrete in much of the east
parking lot.
Crews have recently completed primary work on our roof as
well. This project called for a complete tear off and instal-
lation of a new roof over both the academic and athletic
wings of the school as the original one was prone to leaking
in a growing number of locations during even moderate
rainfall. While we realize this project may have made for a
few headaches and logistical challenges, a leak-free roof will
indeed be a welcome repreive for everyone!
We thank our maintenance director, Tom Wille, and activi-
ties director, Andy Umthun, for coordinating work around
activities and events so that any disruption was kept to a
minimum.
The remaining portion of the east lot that was not resur-
faced will be done next summer. Work will be scheduled
as best as possible to again keep traffic flow and parking
disruption to a minimum.
