Principal’s Corner: Off and Running
It’s hard to believe that by the time you receive this issue
of the Navigator, we will have a month of school under
our belts. Our halls are filled with energy and the “Xavier
Spirit” can be felt throughout the campus. Our new staff
members have joined with our experienced faculty to offer
our students the faith-based, high level academic educa-
tion to which our students and their parents have become
accustomed.
The beginning of the year tends to be the busiest and
it’s important that all of us keep an eye on the calendar.
Activities, meetings and information sessions tend to be
heavy at this time of year. The Xavier calendar is available
on our website and is updated daily.
Speaking of meetings, I want to take this opportunity
to thank all of you who were able to make
it to our parent meetings as well as “Back
to School Night.” These meetings serve as
an opportunity to begin the very important
communication process between you
and Xavier High School. Hopefully
you learned some valuable informa-
tion about what we do to guide your
students through their academic year.
We also hope you felt the sense of
community we are continually striving
to build. The turnout for these meet-
ings solidifies my belief that one of
our most valuable assets is the extent
to which Xavier parents are willing to
be involved in their students’ education.
Our partnership with you, your students
and our parishes is a winning combina-
tion.
The fall, of course, is full of opportunities
to watch our Saints perform on the field,
on the stage, in the gym, as well as on
running courses and golf courses. I invite all of you to
take time, in addition to attending activities your student
may be involved in, to also attend an activity that your
student is not involved in. Whether it is a game, a play, a
concert, a meet, or a half-time performance, I think you’ll
be impressed by the talent level displayed by our Xavier
students. They have truly worked hard to develop the
gifts God has blessed them with.
As I write this Navigator piece, we are already preparing
for our annual Homecoming celebration. Our students will
dress for special theme days, participate in a “Penny War”
to raise funds for Metro Catholic Outreach, “Chalk the
Sidewalk” and paint their class squares in the stadium. On
Wednesday, October 4 we will welcome “home” Fr. Den-
nis Conway (’09) to celebrate Homecoming Mass at 9:50
a.m. On Thursday, October 5 the Xavier community will
gather in the Ron Thillen Gym for our Homecoming Pep
Assembly, Coronation and Bonfire at 7:00 p.m. On Friday,
the Xavier Saints will host Waverly-Shell Rock in a District
Homecoming game. The week will conclude with the
Homecoming Dance (a lock-in) on Saturday from 8-11 p.m.
As the excitement of the early school year begins to sub-
side and the reality of “routine” sets in, I ask that you con-
tinue to partner with us in helping make 2017-18 Xavier’s
best ever! Above all, let’s remember that we are all Xavier
Saints and commit ourselves to this year’s challenging
theme: “Xavier Saints: Ambassadors for Christ.”

Campus Ministry Update

XHS Campus Ministry
The Campus Ministry Team is excited
about the 2017-18 school year! We have
an active student body that is ready for
the challenge to live out the theme of
the school year, which Xavier Saints,
Ambassadors for Christ. It is based
on the scripture found in 2 Corinthians
verse 20…”So we are ambassadors
for Christ, as if God were appealing
through us. We implore you on behalf
of Christ, be reconciled to God.” It is a
challenging theme, as it reminds us that
is all we do we make Christ evident to
the world.
We will spend the school year living this
theme and understanding it more fully
with all our activities.
Retreat Opportunities:
TEC - Teens Encounter Christ is a
weekend retreat for seniors,
click here to register or for more infor-
mation. There are a variety of TEC dates
and locations. See the link for which
one best fits your schedule. All seniors
are highly encouraged to attend TEC.
Class Retreats (1st semester)
We enjoyed a great day of fun and fel-
lowship on Sept. 13 at the Freshman
Retreat. The class of 2021 is amazing!
Our Sophomore Retreat will take place
on Monday, Oct. 9.
Kairos Weekends for Juniors
K29 - Oct 19-22
K30 - Jan 8-21
K31 - March 1-4
Kairos registration is a three step pro-
cess, the first step is a pre-registration
which can be found here. Currently, the
January and March retreats are on a wait-
list status. There are a few spaces avail-
able on the October retreat. If you have
questions, contact Campus Ministry.
Kairos leader applications are available
in the Campus Ministry Office. Seniors
who have attended a Kairos and inter-
ested in being a leader please apply!
Celebration of the Eucharist
Please see school calendar for all school
mass dates. All are welcome to join us
at liturgical celebrations. Our next all
school mass will be Wednesday, Oct. 4,
which is Homecoming. The liturgy will
begin at 9:50 a.m.
The tradition of Friday 7 a.m. liturgy
and all-day adoration will continue this
year. We are blessed to have several
area pastors presiding at these masses.
Students attend adoration with theol-
ogy classes and the chapel is open to
anyone who would like some quiet time
with Jesus. If you are interested in a
permanent time slot at adoration please

Outreach
Xavier is collecting for Mary’s Meals again this year. Last year
we were blessed by a presentation from the founder of Mary’s
Meals, Magnus McFarlane Barrow. Click here to learn more
about Mary’s Meals. The title of Mr. Barrow’s book is “The
Shed that feed a Million Children”. There are copies in the
Xavier library. Xavier senior, John Pape, is coordinating the
collection of funds to support Mary’s Meals. Students will find
blue collection cups in theology classrooms. If every Xavier
student contributes $1.00, a classroom of 35 students could
be fed for an entire year!

Campus Ministry welcomes you to follow our various ways
of communication to stay informed about happenings at
Xavier High School Campus Ministry and other youth fo-
cused events in the surrounding area. Please join our Xavier

Students are encouraged to stop in Campus Ministry to get
involved and share ideas. Our offices are located upstairs
near the LMC. Please call Jody Esker, Erica Ireland or Fr. Vu
in the Campus Ministry Office at 294-6635 Ext. 350 or 384 if
you have questions about any of the spiritual programs being
offered this year.

<<< Respect Life
The month of October marks the beginning of a special
emphasis by the church on respect life issues. This year’s
theme is “Be Not Afraid”. At Xavier High School, we have
set aside the week of Oct 9-13 as Respect Life Week. Dur-
ing this week, students will have an opportunity to reflect
on sanctity of life issues and to participate in a variety of
activities that highlight life issues such as abortion, eutha-
nasia, suicide, violence and immigration. We place 400
white crosses on the front lawn as a symbol of the nearly
4000 lives lost daily to abortion in the U.S. St. Theresa of
Calcutta once said “It is a poverty to decide that a child
must die so that you can live as you wish.” These are pow-
erful words, that challenge us all to consider our actions
and viewpoint surrounding the sanctity of life.

Xavier Foundation Annual Fund Director
The Annual Parish Appeal is an opportunity for parishioners, current parents, past
parents, alumni and friends to make a financial contribution to support Xavier High
School. It is our faith community that keeps Xavier strong. It is our faith community
that helps make a Catholic secondary education affordable for our families. Please
prayerfully consider making a gift to the 2017 Parish Appeal. Your generous gifts pro-
vide critical, unrestricted operating funds that allow us to maintain a balanced budget,
minimize tuition increases, and most importantly support our mission to develop the
total person in a Catholic environment.
Xavier Foundation officially kicked off the Parish Appeal on September 23rd & 24th.
Former Xavier parents and Campaign Chairs Ron (R72) and Peggy Detweiler of St.
Joseph Parish and current Xavier parents Blaine and Marlana Miller of St. Jude Par-
ish are leading the community-wide effort to raise $515,000 for Xavier High School.
Pledge cards will remain available before and after all Masses on September 30th and
October 1st. Xavier parent volunteer leadership from all eleven metro parishes have

Is Your Wallet Ready for College?
A Few Facts about the FAFSA
Most of my day is spent talking to our students about their
college and career plans. We research majors, activities, and
locations all in search of schools that may be a good fit. It’s
exciting to think that nearly 98% of our seniors this time next
year will be snuggled into their dorm rooms at college.
So, my question to you, parents, is what are you
doing to prepare your wallet for the year ahead?
I recently attended a training session on the FAFSA (Free Ap-
plication for Federal Student Aid) and was reminded of the im-
portance of this form. To catch you up to speed, the FAFSA is
the online document that families with college-going students
file each year to receive financial assistance. It uses tax infor-
mation from two years prior to formulate the amount a family
may be able to pay for college. Below are a few thoughts on
the FAFSA and how it works:
1. The FAFSA Opens October 1st. First apply for an FSA ID
here. Next you will file the FAFSA by using this link . Gather
these documents before you begin.
2. Keep your FSA ID for each year you apply and write
down the answers to your security questions.
3. Apply ASAP - University of Iowa asks students to com-
plete the FAFSA prior to Nov 15. IA State and UNI ask for
completion before Dec 1.
Filing the FAFSA qualifies a student for grants, work study, and
student loans. While we would all like to avoid loans, they are
a reality for many families. For a student currently enrolled in
college the interest rate for federal loans is 4.45%. Parents
may qualify for parent loans with a current interest rate of 7%.
This can be an overwhelming process, but I encourage you to
seek help if needed! The team at Iowa College Access Net-
work (ICAN) is taking appointments starting October 1st and
they can help you complete the FAFSA in around 30 minutes.
If you are looking a couple years ahead and would like some
assistance from a financial planner the team at Arnold Financial
Planning has extensive experience with college-going students
and may be another great resource.
Look for additional resources at the colleges your student is
applying as well as fafsa.gov. so please seek them out. In the
coming weeks I will be meeting with our seniors setting up a
game plan for their futures. I ask that you do the same!

Last winter, Xavier’s annual “Dancing with the Saints” event raised more
than $100,000 for sound improvements around campus. Thus far, a brand
new system is in place in the main gymnasium which features much-
improved quality and uniformity throughout the entire gym. Most notably,
fans at Xavier athletic events will notice the upgraded quality of music for
warm-ups and performances by the Xavier Dance Team. Beyond the
quality improvement, the new system makes operation easier for students
and staff.
Other improvements include a new portable system for HECO Field/soc-
cer, which was purchased and used for the second half of the 2017 season.
Additionally, a new sound system for Saints Field is in the process of being
installed.
Forthcoming installations include a new mixing board for the theatre and
media player/streamer for the baseball & softball fields.

Many have noticed the new interactive display located
near the Commons. This display features rotating graph-
ics, school calendar, Twitter feed, and student and team
accomplishments dating back to Xavier’s opening in
1998. Featured historical records include academic hon-
ors (replacing the plaques previously placed on the same
wall), alumni who have persued religious vocations, state
championship teams, state champion & first team all-state
individuals, plays & musicals, all-state musicians, and more.
Additional sections for clubs and the Alumni Hall of Fame
are currently being worked on for completion in early 2018.
A web version of this display will be rolled out once the final
sections are complete, allowing users to access the interface
on their own devices.
A big “thank you” to Ms. Hannah Konzen in the LMC and
XHS alumna, Abbey Karpick X16, who assisted in scanning
and procuring photos, headshots and data for this project.

Xavier Parents for Xcellence (XPX) and the Saints Shop would like to

know if you realize how valuable your support of the Saints Shop
is to Xavier High School. Every purchase you make from the shop
helps support the mission of XPX and projects at Xavier. These
projects include serving meals during Grandparents’ Day, providing

15. A New Face in the Foundation
Welcome, Mary Harken!

The Xavier Foundation welcomes Mary Harken as its
new Director of Development! In her role, Mary will
oversee the general administration, programs and
strategic plan of the Foundation. Additionally, Mary
will manage, develop, promote and implement a
comprehensive development plan. She will work with
(and on behalf of) prospective donors, and assist with
the development and completion of annual giving
and fund raising initiatives and campaigns; including
planned giving programs, major gift campaigns and
scholarship endowments.
Mary comes to Xavier from the Des Moines area,
where she previously served as the Director of Investor
Relations for the Urbandale Chamber of Commerce
since 2011. Prior to her time in Urbandale, she served
as the Associcate Vice-President of Marketing Services
for the Apollo Group/Institute for Professional Devel-
opment in Phoenix, AZ. Additionally, Mary’s experi-
ence includes serving as the Community Marketing
Director for the Marshalltown Economic Development/
Chamber of Commerce and as Executive Director of
the Marshalltown Convention & Visitors Bureau.
Mary is a graduate of Upper Iowa University, which is
where she earned her Masters of Business Administra-
tion. She holds multiple designations and certifications
in organizational and non-profit management.

Congratulations to the 30 Xavier seniors (listed
to the right) who were selected (through appli-
cation and interview) to participate in the Na-
tional Council of Youth Leadership conference
earlier this month! Over 200 students took part
in sessions throughout the two days on top-
ics involving leadership, goal-setting, making
positive decisions, impacting the world through
service, and many others. A special congratu-
lations to the following students who earned

Thank you to XHS alumna, Sr. Grace Marie Heinrich,
STCJM (X04) (pictured middle in top photo), of the
Sister of the Servants of the Pierced Heart of Jesus
and Mary, who shared a First-Class Relic of St. John
Paul II with our Saints, teachers and staff earlier this
month!
A First-Class Relic is a part of a saints body (hair,
bone, flesh, etc.). The relic venerated today was St.
John Paul II’s blood. One aspect of Church teach-
ing on relics is the special intercessory power which
saints enjoy in heaven because of their intimate rela-
tionship with Christ.
Sr. Grace Marie spoke to XHS students about the life
of St. John Paul II, reflecting on his call to “be not
afraid” and to make a difference today. Each student
was also given the opportunity to individually vener-
ate the relic.

Join the 2017-2018 Xavier Booster Club
The Xavier Booster Club is a volunteer organization dedicated to supporting Xavier academics, athletics and fine arts. We help
facilitate, promote, and provide funding for all school related activities. We provide hundreds of volunteer hours and thousands of
dollars a year to enhance the high standards and success of Xavier High School and its students.
The Booster Club assists in many volunteer capacities to support the Xavier students and staff. Each year the Xavier Booster Club
allocates thousands of dollars to various programs, including: Band, Baseball, Basketball, Cheerleading, Choir, Cross Country,
Drama, Football, Golf, Mission Trip, Poms, Post Prom, Show Choir, Soccer, Softball, Speech, Student Activity Clubs, Swim Team,

September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.
We had an awesome display of solidarity and support
as our Pre-K-12 Xavier Catholic Schools community
came together to “beat Cancer”! The Xavier commu-
nity raised more than $6,000 to support Beat Can-
cer Today, a non-profit organization which supports
(through efforts like our “Beat Cancer” shirt drive)
Children’s Cancer Connection, Children’s Oncology
Group, and the University of Iowa Dance Marathon.
Students, parents and fans wore their “Beat Cancer”
shirts for the September 22 home football game vs.
Decorah.
Thank you to Devin and Jill Sires, parents of Jacob
(Regis Middle School 7th grader and Ewing’s Sarcoma
Survivor) for their work in organizing this effort!

Over the past few weeks, Xavier students have rallied in
support of one of our own, XHS junior, Gus Fuhrman, who
is currently fighting to become healthy enough for a
needed kidney transplant. In addition to a variety of
efforts we are, above all, keeping Gus and his family in our
prayers!
