Principal’s Corner: Celebrate the “Holy”
As I write this month’s Navigator address, we have re-
turned from our Thanksgiving break. I sincerely hope that
all of you were able to enjoy extended time with family
and friends as you took time to thank Our Lord for his
abundant gifts.
As we next approach Advent and then the Christmas sea-
son, on behalf of our staff, administration and students of
Xavier, I’d like to wish all of you a blessed and holy Christ-
mas. May the distraction of the “holiday” not interfere
with our celebration of the “holy” day.
The seasons of Advent and Christmas also mean winter
weather and semester exams are just around the cor-
ner. Regarding those topics, I’d like to pass along a few
reminders. First, as we know in Iowa, winter brings with
it the possibility of school delays, early-outs and cancel-
lations. Due to transportation alignment, we follow the
Cedar Rapids Community Schools regarding
those winter adjustments. Announcements re-
garding delays, dismissals and cancellations are
announced by the media. Please tune to one of
our local television or radio stations for informa-
tion on days when the weather is “iffy.” Xavier
will also notify families via our “Alert Solu-
tions” broadcast system. You will receive
a phone call, text and/or e-mail depending
on the preferences you have set up.
Second, please impress upon your stu-
dent the importance of safe and cautious
driving practices during winter weather.
We especially want students to be careful
in our parking areas. Those of you with
the new drivers might want to accom-
pany them to practice those winter driving
habits.
Third, by time you receive this issue of
the Navigator, semester exams will also be
approaching. Information will be posted re-
garding the schedule of those exams. Please
take time to visit with your student regarding
the importance of preparing (early, often and
thoroughly) for these important tests. Here
are a few suggestions:
We occasionally are asked why we have activities contests
and practices during the week of finals. While we realize
that the week can be a stressful one, we also recognize
that the preparation for these assessments has gone on all
semester and that the week prior to exams students are
reviewing. We also intentionally release students at 12:30
each day to give them two additional hours to prepare
for the next day’s assessments. The third reason is that
different schools in our conference/league and outside
our conference/league hold finals at different times. To
accommodate all students at all schools by not conducting
activities during finals week would require multiple weeks
without activities. Logistically, that would be a schedul-
ing challenge. Having said all of that, if your student truly
needs to miss a contest and/or practice for one his or her
activities in order to prepare for finals, that will always be
supported by our administration.
May those of you traveling during the Christmas break
have safe journey to your destinations. May all of you
enjoy the wonderful company of your families. And, most
importantly, may all of us remember that Christ is the rea-
son for the season.
Sincerely,
Tom Keating, Principal

Set a specific time and area to study. The time should
not be too late and the area should be relatively quiet.
Keep distractions to a minimum during study time (Cell
phones, TV, and computer off). Instead, encourage
your students to take an occasional break to use those
items.
Tackle the most difficult material first. It’s easier to
plug away when the energy level is high.
Create their own review material (cards, one-page
guides, diagrams, etc.).

Our Theme Comes Alive!
As 1st Semester comes to a close, we
reflect on the many ways we have seen
our theme of “Xavier Saints, Ambassa-
dors for Christ” come to life this school
year. The beginning of the school year
was kicked off by a change drive to sup-
port Mary’s Meals. During respect life
month we set up crosses for the unborn,
we dressed in black to understand the
issues of life that silence people, and
we collected donations to support
Birthright and Bridgehaven. For Com-
munity Service Day the Saints were out
in force all over the city to help out, and
we have participated in the Angel Tree
project to support Tanager Place. All
this in only a few short months! Xavier
Saints are putting their commitment to
Christ into action.
Reconciliation
As part of our preparations for Advent
our sophomores and juniors, celebrated
the Sacrament of Reconciliation on Nov
30. Thank you to the priests from our
supporting parishes who celebrated
Reconciliation with us. We are very
blessed to have such excellent spiritual
guidance. Please take advantage to
prepare more fully for the Christ child
by receiving the sacrament of reconcilia-
tion. The communal reconciliation dates
are December 16 at 10:30 AM at All
Saints and December 21 at 7:00 PM at
St. Joseph Marion.
Angel Tag Tree
We again are participating in the Angel
Tag project in cooperation with Tanager
Place. Students and faculty can take se-
lect a gift tag from the Angel Tree for a
child in need. 150 children will be able
to have a Christmas present under the
tree because of our participation. There
are still tags available and gifts need to
be returned by Dec 8.
This wonderful project put us all in the
Christmas spirit!
Advent
The Advent season begins Sunday
December 3 and lasts until Dec
24. Spend some time pondering the
wonder of Advent. Christmas Season
is Dec 25- Jan 9. Spend some time
growing in your faith by utilizing online
resources. Check out a website called
Formed here. Formed has an end-
less supply of faith information. It has
movies,documentaries, bible studies,
and talks. Take a look. It would be a
great family advent addition. There are
also many daily reflections and prayers
available online. Here a few recommen-
dations: Redeemed Online; Faith ND;
Dynamic Catholic; Creighton Online
St. Francis Xavier Feast Day
Our patron is St. Francis Xavier whose
Feast Day is Dec. 3. St. Francis Xavier
is an amazing Saint who traveled the
world evangelizing. His focus was to
spread the love of Christ and to to not
focus on his own desires and needs.
We will honor St. Francis Xavier and his
missionary spirit with a prayer service on
Wed. Dec 6, which is also the Feast of
St. Nicholas. This event will be followed
by our Saints visiting all the area Catho-
lic Schools and letting them know about
these two great Saints. To highlight the
missionary spirit, there will be a change
collection to support the Haitian project.
You can learn more about the project
here. Xavier teacher Kristian Soukup
worked as a missionary with this project.
Angel of Hope
There will be a gathering on Dec. 6 at
Xavier around the Angel of Hope. The
vigil coincides with events held simulta-
neously around the world, beginning at
7 p.m. at all Angel of Hope statues. The
statues were inspired by the “Christmas
Box,” a 1993 novel about a woman who
mourns the death of her child at the
base of an angel statue. Author Rich-
ard Paul Evans paid for the first Angel
of Hope in Salt Lake City, Utah after
parents who had lost a child asked for a
statue matching the description in the
book. The statue was brought Xavier by
2014 graduate Kylie DeWees.

Words of wisdom from Pope Francis:
“This journey never comes to an end.
Just as in each of our lives we always
need to begin again,to get up again,to
rediscover the meaning of the goal of
our lives,so also for the great human
family it is always necessary to rediscover
the common horizon toward which we
are journeying.The horizon of hope!
This is the horizon that makes for a good
journey.The season of Advent,restores
this horizon of hope,a hope which does
not disappoint for it is founded on God’s
Word.A hope which does not disappoint,
simply because the Lord never
disappoints! He is faithful! He does not
disappoint! Let us think about and feel
this beauty.”

The Angel of Hope statue at Xavier High School is a beautiful symbol of hope
for all who are grieving the loss of a child. This Advent season, we are called to
pray for everyone who is seeking hope and light throughout their days.
Please join us on December 6th as we offer a prayer service at the Angel of
Hope statue (located on the east side of Xavier High School near the Activities
Entrance) and lift those up who are in need this Advent season. The service
will begin a 7 p.m. and conclude at approximately 7:30 p.m. This is an outdoor
event, so please dress appropriately.
For more information, please contact Judy Ramsey, Adolescent Faith
Formation Coordinator for St. Joseph Catholic Church at 319-377-8402.
Angel of Hope
Prayer Service
It has been an exciting fall here at Xavier, but on November 15th, we took a
breath to reflect during our annual Thanksgiving & Memorial Mass. This mass
is offered in remembrance of LaSalle, Regis & Xavier High School alumni,
former faculty and special friends who we have lost along the way. We thank
all of their family members and friends who joined us. We will continue to
honor their memories and hold them, and their families, in our hearts and in
our prayers!
Following the Memorial Mass, the LaSalle-Regis-Xavier Alumni Association
hosted a small reception for family members of the deceased.
Later that day, we celebrated yet another time-honored tradition with our
annual Thanksgiving Meal! We thank our XHS food service team for the deli-
cious meal and our XPX/volunteer moms for a delightful offering of dessert
pies! We are indeed abundantly blessed!
Giving Thanks;

Congratulations to Xavier senior, Ethan Lowder
(pictured with XHS principal, Tom Keating; his
mother, Sue; and younger brother, Lucas), who
was honored with the “Youth Philanthropist of
the Year” award at the National Philanthropy
Day Awards Luncheon in Coralville on Novem-
ber 14th. While balancing a full class load and
extracurricular activities, Ethan has made time
to help area elementary school students, veter-
ans, and homeless families in our community.
Ethan has spent recent summers “paying it forward” by volunteering for the Young Parents Network and the Zach Johnson Foun-
dation. In 2015, Ethan led “Collections for Veterans,” a collaboration with the Linn County Veterans Association to collect socks,
hats and gloves for those who have served our country.
In 2014 & 2015, Ethan’s service project with the Four Oaks “PUSH CR” program gathered household donations (sofas, chairs,
lamps, bedding, towels, dishes, etc.) to help homeless families move in to their own apartment. His work with the Catholic Worker
House resulted in the donation of more than 200 personal health and hygiene items.
Since 2014, Ethan also has volunteered with the Governor’s State of Iowa Youth Advisory Council, a collection of youth from
across the state which works with the Governor’s office and legislative assembly to advocate for issues affections Iowa’s youth.
Ethan has done all this (and more) while maintaining a 4.17 GPA and participating in speech, mock trial, Model UN, Key Club,
soccer, cross country, Business Professionals of America, and various honor societies.
Congratulations on this well-deserved honor, Ethan! The entire Xavier community is proud of you for being a true “ambassador
for Christ!”

  • 2. 2 Principal’s Corner: Celebrate the “Holy” As I write this month’s Navigator address, we have re- turned from our Thanksgiving break. I sincerely hope that all of you were able to enjoy extended time with family and friends as you took time to thank Our Lord for his abundant gifts. As we next approach Advent and then the Christmas sea- son, on behalf of our staff, administration and students of Xavier, I’d like to wish all of you a blessed and holy Christ- mas. May the distraction of the “holiday” not interfere with our celebration of the “holy” day. The seasons of Advent and Christmas also mean winter weather and semester exams are just around the cor- ner. Regarding those topics, I’d like to pass along a few reminders. First, as we know in Iowa, winter brings with it the possibility of school delays, early-outs and cancel- lations. Due to transportation alignment, we follow the Cedar Rapids Community Schools regarding those winter adjustments. Announcements re- garding delays, dismissals and cancellations are announced by the media. Please tune to one of our local television or radio stations for informa- tion on days when the weather is “iffy.” Xavier will also notify families via our “Alert Solu- tions” broadcast system. You will receive a phone call, text and/or e-mail depending on the preferences you have set up. Second, please impress upon your stu- dent the importance of safe and cautious driving practices during winter weather. We especially want students to be careful in our parking areas. Those of you with the new drivers might want to accom- pany them to practice those winter driving habits. Third, by time you receive this issue of the Navigator, semester exams will also be approaching. Information will be posted re- garding the schedule of those exams. Please take time to visit with your student regarding the importance of preparing (early, often and thoroughly) for these important tests. Here are a few suggestions: We occasionally are asked why we have activities contests and practices during the week of finals. While we realize that the week can be a stressful one, we also recognize that the preparation for these assessments has gone on all semester and that the week prior to exams students are reviewing. We also intentionally release students at 12:30 each day to give them two additional hours to prepare for the next day’s assessments. The third reason is that different schools in our conference/league and outside our conference/league hold finals at different times. To accommodate all students at all schools by not conducting activities during finals week would require multiple weeks without activities. Logistically, that would be a schedul- ing challenge. Having said all of that, if your student truly needs to miss a contest and/or practice for one his or her activities in order to prepare for finals, that will always be supported by our administration. May those of you traveling during the Christmas break have safe journey to your destinations. May all of you enjoy the wonderful company of your families. And, most importantly, may all of us remember that Christ is the rea- son for the season. Sincerely, Tom Keating, Principal @phillyboy14 Tom Keating Xavier Principal Set a specific time and area to study. The time should not be too late and the area should be relatively quiet. Keep distractions to a minimum during study time (Cell phones, TV, and computer off). Instead, encourage your students to take an occasional break to use those items. Tackle the most difficult material first. It’s easier to plug away when the energy level is high. Create their own review material (cards, one-page guides, diagrams, etc.).

  • 4. Our Theme Comes Alive! As 1st Semester comes to a close, we reflect on the many ways we have seen our theme of “Xavier Saints, Ambassa- dors for Christ” come to life this school year. The beginning of the school year was kicked off by a change drive to sup- port Mary’s Meals. During respect life month we set up crosses for the unborn, we dressed in black to understand the issues of life that silence people, and we collected donations to support Birthright and Bridgehaven. For Com- munity Service Day the Saints were out in force all over the city to help out, and we have participated in the Angel Tree project to support Tanager Place. All this in only a few short months! Xavier Saints are putting their commitment to Christ into action. Reconciliation As part of our preparations for Advent our sophomores and juniors, celebrated the Sacrament of Reconciliation on Nov 30. Thank you to the priests from our supporting parishes who celebrated Reconciliation with us. We are very blessed to have such excellent spiritual guidance. Please take advantage to prepare more fully for the Christ child by receiving the sacrament of reconcilia- tion. The communal reconciliation dates are December 16 at 10:30 AM at All Saints and December 21 at 7:00 PM at St. Joseph Marion. Angel Tag Tree We again are participating in the Angel Tag project in cooperation with Tanager Place. Students and faculty can take se- lect a gift tag from the Angel Tree for a child in need. 150 children will be able to have a Christmas present under the tree because of our participation. There are still tags available and gifts need to be returned by Dec 8. This wonderful project put us all in the Christmas spirit! Advent The Advent season begins Sunday December 3 and lasts until Dec 24. Spend some time pondering the wonder of Advent. Christmas Season is Dec 25- Jan 9. Spend some time growing in your faith by utilizing online resources. Check out a website called Formed here. Formed has an end- less supply of faith information. It has movies, documentaries, bible studies, and talks. Take a look. It would be a great family advent addition. There are also many daily reflections and prayers available online. Here a few recommen- dations: Redeemed Online; Faith ND; Dynamic Catholic; Creighton Online St. Francis Xavier Feast Day Our patron is St. Francis Xavier whose Feast Day is Dec. 3. St. Francis Xavier is an amazing Saint who traveled the world evangelizing. His focus was to spread the love of Christ and to to not focus on his own desires and needs. We will honor St. Francis Xavier and his missionary spirit with a prayer service on Wed. Dec 6, which is also the Feast of St. Nicholas. This event will be followed by our Saints visiting all the area Catho- lic Schools and letting them know about these two great Saints. To highlight the missionary spirit, there will be a change collection to support the Haitian project. You can learn more about the project here. Xavier teacher Kristian Soukup worked as a missionary with this project. Angel of Hope There will be a gathering on Dec. 6 at Xavier around the Angel of Hope. The vigil coincides with events held simulta- neously around the world, beginning at 7 p.m. at all Angel of Hope statues. The statues were inspired by the “Christmas Box,” a 1993 novel about a woman who mourns the death of her child at the base of an angel statue. Author Rich- ard Paul Evans paid for the first Angel of Hope in Salt Lake City, Utah after parents who had lost a child asked for a statue matching the description in the book. The statue was brought Xavier by 2014 graduate Kylie DeWees. TEC Seniors should consider going on a TEC (Teens Encounter Christ) retreat. TEC is an opportunity to grow in their faith and prepare for taking their faith life on the next step of their life journey. Go to this site to view dates and registration. Quest Quest Retreat for freshmen and sopho- mores will be held January 21-22 at LaSalle Middle School. The cost is $35. Registration due Jan 13. Click here for the form and information. It is a popular retreat and space is limited, so if you are interested get signed up ASAP. 4 Campus Ministry Update Submitted by Jody Esker XHS Campus Ministry

Just as in each of our lives we always need to begin again,to get up again,to rediscover the meaning of the goal of our lives,so also for the great human family it is always necessary to rediscover the common horizon toward which we are journeying. The horizon of hope! This is the horizon that makes for a good journey. The season of Advent, restores this horizon of hope,a hope which does not disappoint for it is founded on God’s Word.A hope which does not disappoint, simply because the Lord never disappoints! He is faithful! He does not disappoint! Let us think about and feel this beauty.”

  • 9. 9 The Angel of Hope statue at Xavier High School is a beautiful symbol of hope for all who are grieving the loss of a child. This Advent season, we are called to pray for everyone who is seeking hope and light throughout their days. Please join us on December 6th as we offer a prayer service at the Angel of Hope statue (located on the east side of Xavier High School near the Activities Entrance) and lift those up who are in need this Advent season. The service will begin a 7 p.m. and conclude at approximately 7:30 p.m. This is an outdoor event, so please dress appropriately. For more information, please contact Judy Ramsey, Adolescent Faith Formation Coordinator for St. Joseph Catholic Church at 319-377-8402. Angel of Hope Prayer Service It has been an exciting fall here at Xavier, but on November 15th, we took a breath to reflect during our annual Thanksgiving & Memorial Mass. This mass is offered in remembrance of LaSalle, Regis & Xavier High School alumni, former faculty and special friends who we have lost along the way. We thank all of their family members and friends who joined us. We will continue to honor their memories and hold them, and their families, in our hearts and in our prayers! Following the Memorial Mass, the LaSalle-Regis-Xavier Alumni Association hosted a small reception for family members of the deceased. Later that day, we celebrated yet another time-honored tradition with our annual Thanksgiving Meal! We thank our XHS food service team for the deli- cious meal and our XPX/volunteer moms for a delightful offering of dessert pies! We are indeed abundantly blessed! Giving Thanks; Honoring Memories.
  • 10. 1010 Good News! 10 Congratulations to Xavier senior, Ethan Lowder (pictured with XHS principal, Tom Keating; his mother, Sue; and younger brother, Lucas), who was honored with the “Youth Philanthropist of the Year” award at the National Philanthropy Day Awards Luncheon in Coralville on Novem- ber 14th. While balancing a full class load and extracurricular activities, Ethan has made time to help area elementary school students, veter- ans, and homeless families in our community. Ethan has spent recent summers “paying it forward” by volunteering for the Young Parents Network and the Zach Johnson Foun- dation. In 2015, Ethan led “Collections for Veterans,” a collaboration with the Linn County Veterans Association to collect socks, hats and gloves for those who have served our country. In 2014 & 2015, Ethan’s service project with the Four Oaks “PUSH CR” program gathered household donations (sofas, chairs, lamps, bedding, towels, dishes, etc.) to help homeless families move in to their own apartment. His work with the Catholic Worker House resulted in the donation of more than 200 personal health and hygiene items. Since 2014, Ethan also has volunteered with the Governor’s State of Iowa Youth Advisory Council, a collection of youth from across the state which works with the Governor’s office and legislative assembly to advocate for issues affections Iowa’s youth. Ethan has done all this (and more) while maintaining a 4.17 GPA and participating in speech, mock trial, Model UN, Key Club, soccer, cross country, Business Professionals of America, and various honor societies. Congratulations on this well-deserved honor, Ethan! The entire Xavier community is proud of you for being a true “ambassador for Christ!” Lowder Named Young Philanthropist of the Year Congratulations to Xavier senior, Tim Globokar, who was among a select group of high school football players from around Iowa who were named recipients of the IBA’s Student Athlete Achievement Award earlier this month! Beyond the football field, Tim is an outstanding student and am- bassador of Xavier -- AND is heavily-involved in a wide variety of extra- curricular activities. Congrats again Tim on this well-deserved award! Globokar Receives IBA Student-Athlete Achievement Award
