Looking Back. Looking Ahead.
In this combined March/April Navigator, we would like to present you with
our annual report to the Xavier community. Throughout this issue of the
Navigator you will find a detailed overview of many of the school’s
programs. This report includes information about the students, the staff,
the curriculum and much more.
We invite you to carefully examine the information presented. We think
you’ll agree that Xavier is an outstanding school. The data presented
would certainly support that claim.
While we are pleased with the progress that Xavier has made, we hold firm
to the belief that, “Each day we get better or worse; we never stay
the same.” As a result, we continue to look for ways to improve our
programs in order to fulfill our mission – to educate the total person in a
Catholic environment.
This also seems like an appropriate time to thank all of you for your input
throughout the year. We depend on your positive feedback as well as the
concerns you raise to provide us with a barometer of how we’re doing.
Your comments encourage us to constantly examine our school and look for
ways to make it better.

Xavier High School
Mission Statement
The mission of Xavier
High School is to develop
the total person in a
Catholic environment.
Annual Goals
These goals must be measurable, utilizing normed-based
testing. As do most other schools in the state, we use the
Iowa Assessments to measure success. This test is adminis-
tered annually to grades 9-11 in the fall. This test measures
growth and success in Reading, Math, Science and Social
Studies.
Goals for the 2015-16 year were:
1. During the 2015-16 school year, our school will increase
the percentage of 11th grade students scoring at the high
performance level in Reading as measured by the Iowa
Assessments. In 2014-15, the percentage was 27%.
o This goal was met. In 2015-16, the percentage
was 34%.
2. During the 2015-16 school year, our school will increase
the percentage of 11th grade students scoring at the high
performance level in Math as measured by the Iowa
Assessments. In 2014-15, the percentage was 46%.
o This goal was not met. In 2015-16, the
percentage was 43%.
3. During the 2015-16 school year, our school will
decrease the percentage of 11th grade students scoring at
the low performance level in science as measured by the
Iowa Assessments. In 2014-15, the percentage was 9%.
o This goal was not met. In 2015-16, the
percentage was 10%.
Goals for the 2016-17 year will not be set until the state
determines which assessment will be used.
Each year Xavier High School establishes a set of
goals to help us focus our academic efforts.

More About Xavier

The Theology Department and Campus
Ministry work together to lead in the
faith formation of the students here at
Xavier, but every member of the ad-
ministration, faculty, and staff share in
this responsibility. In keeping with our
Catholic tradition, we seek to engage
both the head and the heart of the stu-
dents in this process of formation.
The Theology curriculum includes top-
ics such as Old and New Testament,
Religious Foundations, Church History,
Ethics and Morality, Christian Lifestyles,
Comparative Religions and Apologet-
ics. Our curriculum is in transition
to align with the required curriculum
developed by the USCCB. All students
who are members of one of our eleven
participating parishes are required to
take four years of Theology. All other
students are required to take at least
two years of Theology. By the time
students have graduated from Xavier,
they will have had over five hundred
clock hours of direct faith formation in
a Theology classroom. The Theology
curriculum follows the guidelines estab-
lished by the Roman Catholic Church.
The Campus Ministry Department at
Xavier offers a wide variety of spir-
itual opportunities and all students are
encouraged to become involved in any
or all of these opportunities. Some of
these offerings are class retreats, mis-
sion trips, liturgy committee, Eucha-
ristic Adoration, Community Service
Day, music ministry, daily prayer,
liturgies, prayer services, reconciliation
services, Stations of the Cross, Kairos
retreats, TEC retreats, Aid to Women,
Kids Against Hunger, Lifesavers (pro-
life committee) and Ministry in Service
class. Xavier has provided support to
the Catholic Worker House, Birthright,
the Salvation Army, Catholic Charities
and numerous other charitable organi-
zations. Our goal is to provide oppor-
tunities for our students to make their
Catholic faith come to life.

Tuition Reminder
We would like to remind all families that tuition accounts
must be paid in full by May 10. Seniors with unpaid
balances will not be allowed to participate in graduation
ceremonies.
Students will not be permitted to return for the following
academic year until any outstanding balance is paid in full
in accordance with the Xavier Board of Education Policy
#3241.
Tuition Contract Reminder
Tuition contracts for the 2016-17 academic year will be is-
sued online in mid-May and must be completed online by
May 31, 2016. Your student(s) will not be officially enrolled
until this is completed. More information on this new pro-
cess will be forthcoming in May.

Campus Ministry Update

XHS Campus Ministry
WISDOM & HOLINESS...
Our theme this year is “With humility,
comes wisdom and holiness”. In reflect-
ing on the theme, we have had many
opportunities to grow in this capacity.
Things like senior service projects, class
retreats, Saints helping Saints, sports
defeats and victories.
JOIN US FOR MASS!
Our department is committed each and
everyday to reaching out in the love of
Christ to students and faculty. Please
join us for Grandparents Mass on April
27, and/or every Friday morning for
7 a.m. Mass followed by adoration. On
Wednesday’s during most Xcel hours we
have Mass in the Chapel. This Mass is
open to anyone who wishes to attend.
If you are outside the building and join-
ing us, please check with us first to be
assured of time. ( Xcel does fluctuate
dependant of schedules.)
SISTER STEPHANIE BALIGA
On May 12 our students will hear the
from Sister Stephanie Baliga. She will
share her journey from obsessed focus
on athletic performance as a top nation-
al runner to her recent Olympic Trials
attempt as a nun running for the glory
of God. Her presentation will begin at
12:30. All are welcome.
ADDITIONAL UPCOMING
OFFERINGS
Looking forward to May, we will have a
Day of the Rosary on May 6. This day
will be dedicated to the prayer of the
Blessed Mother Mary. Classes will join
in the Chapel and recite a rosary each
period of the day. On the evening of
May 11, seniors will have an opportunity
to gather in the evening at St. Pius, and
reflect on their high school experience.
On Friday May 13, we will celebrate
our final Friday Morning Mass with the
seniors. Traditionally, this is called Pack
the Chapel. Let’s see just how many
people can fit into our beautiful chapel!
LOOKING AHEAD TO
SUMMER
Summer is almost upon us. Summer
affords a more relaxed schedule and
hopefully some recreation which leads
to re-CREATION of the spirit. Make
some time this summer for new spiri-
tual experience. You could try an hour
of adoration each week in the St. Pat’s
chapel, you could make a pilgrimage to
West Bend to the Grotto of Redemp-
tion, you could attend daily Mass at
your parish or any one that fits into your
schedule. On any vacation you take,
make your faith part of it...visit a lo-
cal faith attraction, attend Mass in the
towns you visit, use car/airplane time
to read reflective material or listen to
spiritual podcasts (may I suggest Father
Mike Schmitz!) A great summer reading
book is The Shed that Feed a Million
Children, by Magnus McFarlane- Bar-
row. Magnus, founder of Mary’s Meals,
will be speaking at Xavier in September
and will also be a speaker at the Christ
Our Life Conference. Whatever you
do, don’t forget that everything is a gift
from God. See the face of Christ in all
your activities of the summer!

AP TEST FEES
AP Students are reminded to pay the
AP Exam fee by April 28. Check here for

NATIONAL COUNCIL ON
YOUTH LEADERSHIP (NCYL)
The purpose of NCYL is to honor next
year’s high school seniors who are lead-
ers: those who are involved and give
back to their school and community.
Students received an email this week
with instructions on how to apply. From
the initial applications, Xavier is al-
lowed to nominate 35 students (current
juniors) to participate in this program.
The program includes a 2 day leader-
ship seminar next fall and an awards
ceremony after completion. Here is a
copy of the information that what was
sent to the juniors. It includes the initial
application requirements, information
concerning the program and an initial
application form.
YOUTH LEADERSHIP FOR
FIVE SEASONS (YLFS)
Youth Leadership for Five Seasons
(YLFS) - YLFS is an excellent opportunity
for next year’s juniors to become bet-
ter informed about the challenges and
opportunities of our metropolitan area.
Xavier High School is allowed to select
3 students and 1 alternate student from
the current sophomore class to partici-
pate. Here is a copy of the information
(including an initial application and
program schedule) that was sent to the
sophomores.
SENIOR PARENTS
Students will be receiving information
with regard to final transcripts and other
final surveys in the next couple of weeks
during their Xcel Hour. They will be
guided to list their final college /career/
military plans in Naviance Family Con-
nection. Mrs. Joens will be communicat-
ing this information directly to students.
STATEWIDE YOUTH
BROADBAND ADVISORY
COUNCIL (SYBAC)
Iowa Communications Network (ICN)
is accepting student applications for its
Statewide Youth Broadband Advisory
Council (SYBAC) for the 2016-2017
school year.
Students will identify strategies to
improve broadband connectivity and
community environments. This year
SYBAC students have discussed a range
of topics including free public Wi-Fi, the
new Amazon ECHO product, driverless
cars, lack of strong reliable broadband
in some Iowa schools, and LiFi (Light
Fidelity).
They are looking for students enrolled
in 10th – 12th grades during the 2016-
2017 school year who are self-motivated
leaders,willing to provide feedback
& advocate for technology. Meetings
will take place monthly, beginning in
September 2016 through May 2017, via
video conference, teleconference, and/
or in-person. Council members also will
communicate via e-mail. Applications
can be found here and are
due May 9th.

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE XAVIER BOYS
BASKETBALL TEAM ON WINNING THE 2016
CLASS 3A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP!
The XHS boys’ basketball team knocked off two-time defending state
champion Wahlert Catholic of Dubuque by a score of 62-57 on March
12th in Des Moines. This championship marks the first state title for
the XHS boys’ basketball program since Xavier opened in 1998. Xavier
earned an overall record of 19-8 during the 2015-2016 campaign, set-
ting a school record for wins in a season, and also earned the school’s
first share of a boys’ basketball division championship in the competi-
tive Mississippi Valley Conference.
Individually, six Saints were Mississippi Valley Conference all-division
selections including Max Techau, Mitchell Burger, Matt Mims, Ryan
Stulken, Jackson Joens & Michael Fettkether. Max Techau was named
3rd team all-state by the Iowa Newspaper Association; Mitchell Burger
was invited to compete in the Elite Sports Eastern Iowa All Star Game;
and Jackson Joens was named Championship “Player of the Game,”
KCRG TV9 Athlete of the Week and named to the State All-Tourna-
ment Team.
The Saints are led by head coach, Ryan Luehrsmann, who has served
as Xavier’s coach for the past four seasons. Luehrsmann was named
the 2016 “Coach of the Year” by the Cedar Rapids Gazette.
The 2016 championship marks the 30th state title Xavier has earned
in athletics across 10 different IHSAA/IHSGAU-sanctioned athletic
programs.

Xavier Parents for Xcellence (XPX) and the Saints Shop would like to
thank all of our customers for your support of our store. We do not
know if you realize how valuable your support of the Saints Shop is
to Xavier High School. Every purchase you make from the shop helps
support the mission of XPX and projects at Xavier. For example, this
past year we have been able to fund the following projects at Xavier:
A $10,000 donation to the school to fund the TEAL room
as part of the LMC renovations. The money was used to
purchase 6 student tables with 5 chairs per table, a
teacher’s station, TV monitors and storage. If you haven’t
done so yet, go check out the LMC and TEAL room, the
changes will amaze you.
• $4,000 in monetary awards for teachers and staff, years of
service awards and retirement gifts.
• $4,000 for teacher and staff Christmas party and gifts.
$2,000 to help fund the school trip to see the Pope, bring
spiritual speakers to Xavier and keeping our beautiful
Chapel decorated for each season.
• $2,500 to host meals throughout the year for our staff
and teachers as a small token of appreciation for all they
do everyday for our school and students. Meals are
offered during the first day of school, conferences,
Catholic schools week, teacher appreciation day and the
last day of school.
• $500 to purchase upgrades for the two staff lounge areas
at school.
$500 to host Grandparents day, which has become one of
the most memorable days of the year at Xavier.
As you can see, without your support of the Saints Shop, XPX
wouldn’t be able to carry out our mission of supporting the staff and
students of Xavier High School. So please keep shopping and help
us make Xavier an even better place to send our kids every day

As part of Student Appreciation Day on April
15th, we welcomed the Sidewinders of the 34th
Army Band, featuring Xavier’s own Mr. Scott
Schaub & Mr. Alex Rebling as they rocked the
Ron Thillen Gymnasium for our Saints.
XHS teacher Mrs. Molly Burgeson has
developed an awesome tradition of
taking her freshmen English students
to Meth-Wick Community to discuss
Markus Zusak’s novel, “The Book Thief.”
Saints again traveled to Meth-Wick on
April 14th to visit with residents about
the book (and beyond).
Xavier Jazz Band One qualified for the Iowa Jazz Championships in Des Moines for the sec-
ond consecutive year. The Iowa Jazz Championships feature 60 of the finest high school jazz
ensembles from around Iowa (15 in each of the four IHSMA classes).
Seventy six Xavier students were inducted in to the XHS chapter of the National Honor
Society on March 29th.

Board of Education member, Fr. Mark
Ressler, was honored the boys’ basket-
ball state quarterfinal game as Xavier’s
“Fan of the Game.” Fr. Mark has been
involved in Catholic education for most
of his life and attends most home and
away XHS boys basketball games.
Congratulations to Pat Collins (R83) on
receiving the Iowa High School Athletic
Directors Association’s “Outstanding
Service Award” on March 20th. Pat
received this award primarily for his
longtime & exceptional work as the
“voice of the Xavier Saints” boys’
basketball program.
XHS students received surprises on March 23rd in the form of uplifting notes from a small
group of Xavier seniors who stepped forward and anonymously wrote nearly 800 personalized
letters throughout Lent with a positive message for the recipient.

Xavier Meal Program Reminder
Xavier uses EZ School Pay to make lunch payments online as well as giving parents a
way to track how much is available in their student‘s lunch account. We highly encourage
you to log onto https://www.EZSchoolPay.com to sign on or register as a new user.
Students with negative balances greater than $25 will not be allowed to
purchase additional meals. They will be provided with a peanut butter
sandwich and milk until their balance is brought current.
Parents may still apply for free and reduced price meals. Income eligibility guidelines
and applications can be found on the Xavier website at http://www.xaviersaints.org/

SPRING CLEANING?
We welcome donations of baby, children, adult clothing, toys,
games, household items, small appliances, books, sporting
goods, and hand-held electronics (large furniture items can not
be accepted).
All donations are to be dropped off at the school on Friday, April
22, 2016, between 3 and 6 p.m. (a tax receipt will be available). Pro-
ceeds from this fundraiser will assist in purchasing equipment for the
band program. All unsold items will be donated to local charitable
organizations.

Help earn money for Xavier High School
by bringing in your Hy-Vee receipts!
Remember that simply turning your Hy-Vee grocery,
gas and/or drug store receipts dated May 1, 2015-
April 30, 2016 help earn funds for Xavier HS via
Hy-Vee’s “Cash 4 Students” program. Bring your re-
ceipts in to the XHS Main Office or send them with
your student to drop off. Remember to check draw-
ers, cars, purses and wallets for receipts!

St. Francis Xavier Scholarship Reminder
SCHOLARSHIP OFFERS FULL TUITION TO
XAVIER HIGH SCHOOL
Thanks to a generous financial donation, the Xavier Founda-
tion is able to offer the St. Francis Xavier Scholarship. This
scholarship awards FULL tuition to Xavier High School for up
to four years to qualifying students. Students in grades 8-11
may apply.
In order to be eligible for consideration of the St. Francis Xavi-
er Scholarship, students must meet the following criteria:
a. They are a practicing Christian, participating in
an area parish or church.
b. The combined household income must be less
than $75,000 per year.
c. They must have 2 teachers or 1 teacher and 1
coach’s letter of recommendation to apply for
the scholarship.
d. They must have 3.0 or better GPA or grade
equivalent (if they have completed Grade 9
or above).
e. They must be in good standing within their
community (i.e. no community offenses
on record).
Once the scholarship is awarded, the student
must maintain a 3.0 GPA and have no major
disciplinary issues.

Xavier 504 Parent
Support Group
The Xavier High School Guidance Department
has teamed with parents to start of 504
Parent Support Group at Xavier. The goal of
this group is to support parents of 504 students
at Xavier through their experiences with the
goal of student growth in confidence and learn-
ing to advocate for their own needs. Lauren
Hammerberg, participant and co-founder of
the group shares that “Sometimes a parent just
needs to hear, ‘I’ve been there too’ and ‘You
and your child ARE going to get through this.”

Post Prom
Information
Post Prom will be held from mid-
night until 2:30 a.m. following
Prom on May 7th. The location
for this event is The Northwestern
Mutual Iowa Sports Center located
at 3055 Robins Road in Hiawatha.
This event is free and is open to all
junior and senior Xavier students
regardless of whether or not they
attend prom. Prom dates are also
welcome.
The purpose of this event is to
provide a safe and fun environment
for these students. In January, there
were letters sent out to junior and
senior parents requesting monetary
donations. If you have not given,
but would still like to, you can
contact Sara Baldus at sbaldus68@
gmail.com or Sue Scott at suecrc-
sd55@gmail.com. They will also be
contacting you soon with an oppor-
tunity to volunteer the night of Post
Prom, or to donate food and bever-
ages. There will be a VolunteerSpot
set up for this purpose.
There will be door prizes awarded
that night as well as many fun activi-
ties available to the students.

update. The forms can be turned
in to Peggy in the main office.
There will be forms available the
night of the event, but only those
students who are 18 or older will
