Employee Well-Being Has Become a Priority for Employers —
Are You Prepared to Lead And Engage Your Colleagues on a Road to
Health Accountability?
World Congress and Northeast Business Group on Health (NEGBH) are excited to present a fresh
and timely agenda that directly responds to the business needs of new members of the employee
health community. Join us in Boston on July 23-24 for intensive Employee Well-Being 101,
laying out the framework for active discussion and idea exchanges through real employer
experiences, including from UPMC Health Plan, L.L. Bean, Massachusetts Department of
Health and Pitney Bowes.
The Bootcamp delivers a fresh look at the evolution of wellness, innovative initiatives and building
programs founded on reconciling business goals with employee health accountability. Prepare to
challenge the way you think about wellness and position your program by developing the employee
health business case of the future — understand the relationship between employer and employee
accountability, comply with new incentives rules and integrate technology that is customized to
impact your workforce.
ROI. Technology. Affordable Care Act (ACA). Population Health Managment.
Multigenerational Workforces. Business Case. C-Suite Buy-In. Incentives.
Uncover how employers and plans, including Tesla Motors, American Speech-Language-Hearing
Association (ASHA), Baystate Health and Niagara Bottling are creating a value proposition and
controlling costs by delivering a wellness strategy that integrates behavioral economics, culture change
and technology and innovation to achieve a true personalization of employee health. Whether you are
considering, or are in the early stages of crafting the business plan for your employee well-being
program, seeking training for new team members or looking for a refresher, this meeting is ideal for you.

9:30 am INVESTMENT IN WORKPLACE HEALTH AS A BUSINESS STRATEGY: HEALTH AND
WELL-BEING — BUILD A BUSINESS CASE FOR YOUR EMPLOYEE WELLNESS PROGRAM
In today’s world of 24/7 connectivity and availability to an employer, your company’s organizational culture can be a main hindrance to employee performance.
In this session, learn the fundamentals of developing the right business case to meet business goals and engage employees in their own well-being.
• Challenge management to recognize the severity of work-related health risk factors, for example: obesity, diabetes and stress — Determine the impact
of chronic conditions on employee productivity
• Evaluate your employee population’s needs to demonstrate how a wellness program will help your employers control health care costs, improve
employee productivity and enhance workforce engagement
• Discuss and decide measures of wellness program success — ROI or overall improved employee health?

10:15 am POPULATION HEALTH MANAGEMENT
THINK POPULATIONS, SEE INDIVIDUALS — LESSONS LEARNED AND HOW TO APPLY THEM
Employers faced with global competition, increasing medical costs and lost productivity must maximize strategies that work – and jettison those that don’t. What
have we learned over decades of emphasis on “wellness” and now “population health”? From personal reflections of what works – and what doesn’t – and what’s
on the horizon, Dr. Parkinson will share practical ways for employers to address current and future challenges in light of the ACA and health care reform. How do we:
• Translate population approaches into actions
• Empower employees and their families to improve health
• Reduce excessive medical costs

Baystate Health Takes Innovative Steps to Win the Weight Loss Battle
From “hire to retire” Baystate Health cares for employee well-being through the company’s comprehensive “Baystate Healthy” program. The mission
of Baystate Healthy is to create a strong, fit, energized and resilient workforce, essential for business success. The continuous demands of the hospital
environment present an ongoing challenge for generating desired program participation and outcomes. Baystate Health’s three-year evaluation study
showed positive change in many employee health risk factors except for two of most importance — physical activity and body weight. This case study will
highlight how Baystate broadened the dialog on employee well-being in order to focus resources to engage employees toward achieving a healthy weight.
Preliminary results are encouraging and employees got what they wanted (and needed) most. You will:
• Learn a simple model to broaden the dialogue on well-being and healthy weight in a way that is positive, non-threatening and fun
• Hear innovative ideas for how to integrate a weight management program as a component of the health plan benefit along with creative strategies to inspire
and motivate ongoing engagement and weight loss • Gain insights for winning solutions and lessons learned to help you achieve program success

3:30 pm FOUNDATION OF TRANSPARENCY THROUGH OPEN COMMUNICATION
CREATE WELLNESS ENGAGEMENT AND COMMUNICATION STRATEGIES THAT DELIVER
MESSAGES THAT RESONATE AND MOTIVATE
Communicating benefits to employees continues to be an obstacle for most employers. As a result, there have been important innovations in the crafting
well-being messaging and this creativity has taken many shapes and forms. By asking “how do we communicate wellness incentives? What’s a different way
to present that?” Niagara Bottling has implemented a plan that ensures their total employee population is reached with a message that resonates, including:
• Concepts employee can “see” – i.e. “Don’t eat cereal that changes the color of your milk!”
• Learn the role communication plays not in “talking” to employees, but engaging them to motivate behavior change
• Consider demographics in initial communication strategy development to ensure effective use of internal resources
• Debate the role of social media in reaching your target employee population and identify successful use of informatics

GENERATIONAL WELLNESS
Engage the Most Diverse Workforce in History
Millennials already make up nearly 20% of all workers in the United States and they are the fastest growing sector. Additionally, for the first time in history, there
are four very distinct generations comprising our workforce and the way in which they respond to technology, education and their own health is vastly different.
This presentation will highlight the defining characteristics of each generation, show you why this is significance of the issue, present data to support generational
complexities as an important health promotion issue and give you concrete strategies to engage a multi-generational population in your health promotion efforts.
• Identify the defining characteristics of each generation and why they are important to health promotion concepts
• Leverage resources to create a new wellness initiative that uses delivery methods members of all generations will be motivated to engage with
• Discuss the results of at least one scientific study where the focus was on generational issues related to health promotion

In this session, learn the fundamentals of developing the right business case to meet business goals and engage employees in their own well-being. • Challenge management to recognize the severity of work-related health risk factors, for example: obesity, diabetes and stress — Determine the impact of chronic conditions on employee productivity • Evaluate your employee population’s needs to demonstrate how a wellness program will help your employers control health care costs, improve employee productivity and enhance workforce engagement • Discuss and decide measures of wellness program success — ROI or overall improved employee health? The mission of Baystate Healthy is to create a strong, fit, energized and resilient workforce, essential for business success. The continuous demands of the hospital environment present an ongoing challenge for generating desired program participation and outcomes. Baystate Health’s three-year evaluation study showed positive change in many employee health risk factors except for two of most importance — physical activity and body weight. This case study will highlight how Baystate broadened the dialog on employee well-being in order to focus resources to engage employees toward achieving a healthy weight. Preliminary results are encouraging and employees got what they wanted (and needed) most. You will: • Learn a simple model to broaden the dialogue on well-being and healthy weight in a way that is positive, non-threatening and fun • Hear innovative ideas for how to integrate a weight management program as a component of the health plan benefit along with creative strategies to inspire and motivate ongoing engagement and weight loss • Gain insights for winning solutions and lessons learned to help you achieve program success Barbara Linton, MS, RD Director, Health, Wellness and WorkLife Solutions BAYSTATE HEALTH 1:00 pm – 2:00 pm WELLNESS NETWORKING LUNCHEON 2:00 pm – 2:45 pm KNOW YOUR EMPLOYEE POPULATION: IDENTIFY EMPLOYEE POPULATION DEMOGRAPHICS TO IMPLEMENT NEED-BASED and FOCUSED HEALTH INITIATIVES • Organize fitness activities by risk level and physical capabilities to create success behavior change for your employees • Breakdown your population to identify tools and techniques both employees and dependants can use to readily engage in wellness offerings • Learn how different segments of your employee population understand health accountability to create the “right” employer role in promoting improved personal well-being Andrew R. As a result, there have been important innovations in the crafting well-being messaging and this creativity has taken many shapes and forms. By asking “how do we communicate wellness incentives? What’s a different way to present that?” Niagara Bottling has implemented a plan that ensures their total employee population is reached with a message that resonates, including: • Concepts employee can “see” – i.e. “Don’t eat cereal that changes the color of your milk!” • Learn the role communication plays not in “talking” to employees, but engaging them to motivate behavior change • Consider demographics in initial communication strategy development to ensure effective use of internal resources • Debate the role of social media in reaching your target employee population and identify successful use of informatics Scott Haverlock Talent and Total Rewards Senior Leader NIAGARA BOTTLING 3:30 pm – 4:00 pm NETWORKING and REFRESHMENT BREAK IN THE EXECUTIVE NETWORKING LOUNGE 4:00 pm – 4:45 pm GOVERNMENT CASE STUDY: Learn How the Massachusetts Department of Public Health Implements Statewide Approaches to Prevention and Wellness The state of Massachusetts has set aside $5.7M for workplace wellness in the state budget and are in the process of developing what that initiative will look like.
