  2. 2. Introduction  A criminal defense attorney based in Reno, Nevada, William Routsis has represented clients in criminal cases, such as those involving drug charges and homicide. In his more than two decades of legal practice, William Routsis has earned a reputation for securing high-profile acquittals, such as that of Rodney John Sency. After a five-year trial, jurors found Rodney Sency not guilty of manslaughter. In fact, many shook his hand outside the courtroom, wishing him well. Sency, a former South Lake Tahoe mechanic, had been charged with manslaughter in the death of Edward Ortega, a workman at his ranch, on July 31, 2002. Sency had told Ortega that he was being fired, after which a confrontation ensued.
  3. 3. Rodney Sency  Sency struck Ortega with the handle of a sledgehammer, killing him. Attorney William Routsis argued that Sency had acted in self-defense. Routsis focused on Ortega’s history of violence, which included five assaults. The prosecution’s case revolved around Sency’s actions after the death, including the report that he had tried to dispose of the body. In the end, it was the strong case by the defense and Sency’s sincerity throughout the trial that were said to have won over the jury, leading to his acquittal.
