3. Research
• The research I did for my music video, while very in-depth, wasn't used
to make the music video any better. This was because I didn't have the
time to film all the things I wanted to film for the music video, such as
the fight scene and the 'plot' of the video.
• I also didn't have the time to apply colour-correction effects to the video
to make it more red and 'hell-like', like I originally intended to do.
• Some things I could have done better would have been to learn how to
do all of these things in Vegas Pro 14 (the editing software that I use at
home), which would have made the video look, as well as play out, a lot
better and look a lot more professional, and therefore, better.
4. Planning
• My planning for the music video wasn't very good. I tried my hardest to
plan the video out to be as ambitious (by the standards of music videos
I've made before) as possible, but I was completely unable to follow
through on my ideas, as I am better at coming up with video ideas in the
moment, while I'm filming the video sight on scene.
• One such thing I planned to do in my music video but didn't end up
doing in the end was a fight scene between me and my friend Harry
(who would have also acted in this music video)
5. Time Management
• My time management during the process of making my music video
wasn't the best. Though I managed to stick to my schedule for most of
the process of producing the video, things began to fall apart around the
time of production, where matters beyond my control caused me to
have to cut some things out of the filming process (like the
aformentioned fight scene).
• This affected my confidence in the project, and by extention, the
efficiency of which I worked for the rest of said project, including the
editing and evaluation.
• I believe that my project would have come out a lot better, had I had
additional time and resources to work with. I would have had the time to
include things that I wanted to include in the video (like the fight scene I
mentioned), as well as other shots that would have tied into the fight
scene a little more.
6. Technical Qualities - camera
• Compared to other music videos that I have watched (and was inspired by
when making my own music video), the camerawork in my video was incredibly
basic. There were many, many types of shots in the music video (the video for
the song 'Welcome to the Jungle' by Guns N' Roses), such as sideways-on shots,
tracking shots, overhead, closeup and zooming in and out. However, in my
music video, there were just tracking shots and a static close-up on my face.
7. Technical Qualities – editing/post
• Compared to other music videos that I have watched (and was inspired by
when making this music video), the editing and post-production done in my
video was very basic. The November Rain music video (pictured below and to
the left) is, in its most basic form, an extra-long montage of Axl getting
married to his then-girlfriend, with some footage of Guns N' Roses playing
the song spliced into the video for those who weren't interested in the 'plot'
of the video. However, with my music video, there was only me playing my
guitar to the song 'Buried Alive' (while listening to it on my headphones the
whole way through).
8. Technical Qualities – editing/post
• One similarity between my music video and the November Rain music video
was the use of cross-fading (the practice of having two separate video clips
fading in between each other). This occurred several times during the video,
most notably during the parts of the video that shifted between showing me
playing my guitar to me singing the song. As well as that, I added text into the
video to show the lyrics of the song as it was sung. I did this because as the
song is heavy metal, I understand that some people would have difficulty
making out the words to the song.
9. Aesthetic Qualities
My music video didn't look too great, as I believe that, upon re-watching the
video, the lighting was too harsh in the parts of the video that I was playing guitar
in (a good two thirds of the video) was too harsh. When I watched the video on my
PC, I could barely see myself playing the guitar.
I would probably improve the aesthetics of the video by filming the parts of me
playing the guitar at different times of the day (like in the late afternoon where the
lighting from the sun would be a lot less harsh, in order for the viewers of the
video to see me better.
However, I believe the parts of the video that involved me singing the song 'Buried
Alive' looked a lot better, given the camera I was filming the video on (the front-
facing camera on my smartphone). If the lighting for the guitar-playing bits of the
video was the same as the lighting on me singing Buried Alive, then I would
probably have been a lot happier with the music video as a whole.
10. Audience Appeal
One way that I believe I appealed to a potential audience in my music video was
that I was playing the guitar and singing along to the song 'Buried Alive'
throughout the duration of the video. This would have appealed to those who
played guitar and sang for a hobby, and draw them into my hypothetical career, if I
were to make a living off of making these kinds of videos.
14. Peer Feedback Summary
• What do you agree with from your peer feedback?
•I'm happy that people noticed me cutting to the beat in my music video, as
that's something I spent a lot of time making sure that I got right.
•I also liked filming myself in my office at home, and I'm glad that people
noticed that I attempted to make it as studio-like as possible (though I
could've brought some
• What do you disagree with from your peer feedback?
• The part where one of the reviewers said that I could have filmed the singing
section in a concert setting. I had no access to anything of the sort, and if I
did, the quality would have been worse since it would've been dark, and my
phone camera would've been shaking around and around all the time due to
my hands trying to hold it up.
15. Action Plan for future development
• Me lip-syncing to the song 'Buried Alive'. I could've made the area I
was filming in look more like a recording studio. I could've had my
guitar and guitar amp in the shot as I filmed that portion of the video
• When I played my electric guitar, I had the idea of going into the
music studio and filming myself playing 'Buried Alive' on the drums,
and possibly on one of the bass guitars in there as well.
• Something I could've done to make the text depicting the lyrics to the
song more noticeable was if I had changed the colours of the text to
contrast with what was going on in the video at the time, rather than
just leaving it at a flat red colour the whole way through and not
doing anything to make it look more visually appealing.
