5. Location
∙ Skoczów lies within the historical boundaries of the Cieszyn Silesia region,
while referring to the geographical aspect, it lies at the southern end of the
Upper Vistula Valley region, which is part of the Oświęcim Basin. From the
east, south and west, the city is surrounded by the Silesian Foothills, a
section of which - the eastern slope of Górka Wilamowicka (388 m above
sea level) - belongs to Skoczów

10. ∙ The local legend about the origin of the
name of the town mentions a real
stronghold that used to exist in
Międzywiec, upstream of the Bładnica
River. With time, people began to settle in
the present area of the city, and the old
stronghold collapsed. The town that
"jumped" to its present place is therefore
called Skoczów. In 1327 it is mentioned as
the oppidum Scocoviense. On the map of
Abraham Ortelius from 1603, the village
appears as Skoczow. The Swiss
cartographer and geographer Matthäus
Merian in his work "Topographia" published
in 1650 gives two Germanized forms of the
name of the place: "Skotzaw" and

22. ∙ Monday, May 22, 1995 was a special day in the
700-year history of a small town. On that day,
something happened that did not appear in our
wildest dreams. The Holy Father, John Paul II,
came to Skoczów on an unofficial visit. On the
Kaplicówka hill, where the main celebration of
the pastoral pilgrimage to the Bielsko-Żywiec
diocese took place. The Polish Pope was
welcomed by a quarter of a million pilgrims from
all Polish dioceses. Back then, no one thought
about the piercing wind, nagging chill and the
ubiquitous mud.
