15. T
he word perfume comes down
to us from the Latin phrase per
fumum, literally meaning “through
the smoke”. For initially resins and
highly fragrant woods were burnt
as fumigations, a way for men to
communicate with the other world, that of the
heavens and the gods. Fumigations also had
a practical side from Antiquity to the Age of
Enlightenment as a weapon against contagious
diseases and epidemics. The art of perfume-
making most likely began in Ancient Egypt,
where so many civilised things began. It was an
aromatic art and craft that journeyed to the Near
and Middle East, Italy, Grasse, Paris and beyond,
with today France remaining the centre of
perfume making in Europe and possibly
the world.
Perfume making in France can trace its roots
back to at least 17th century Versailles where arts
and craftsmen rivalled one another to create the
finest of products for the fashionable court. Their
genius in creating fragrances went not only into
scented colognes and waters but also sachets,
gloves and fans, all key components of the court
lifestyle. Perfume-making was elevated to the
grade of art by Colbert during the reign of Louis
XIV while the court of France became known as
the perfume court during the reign of Louis XV
by its European neighbours.
Fragrances both old and new persevere in
Paris, among them a number of long lasting
scents. For 160 years, Guerlain’s mythical Eau de
Cologne Impériale, has charmed the olfactory
sense, while the house of Lanvin created its
always scentfully in style Arpège in 1927, and
165 candles are being lit for the Grasse-based
house of Molinard whose heady Habanita
remains a singular sensation.
Pierre-François-Pascal Guerlain opened his
first boutique in Paris on the rue de Rivoli on the
ground floor of the Meurice Hotel. He went on
to create the now legendary Eau de Cologne
Impériale for the Empress Eugénie in 1853 and
would subsequently become the official supplier
to the Emperor. The refreshing scent of orange,
lemon, bergamot, aromatised with lavender
and rosemary was turned out in a superb flacon
covered with sculpted bees and gold framings
for the perfume-maker wanted a prestigious
encasing for its royal recipient, who also used it
to soothe her migraines. The fragrance and its
original bottle, made from period moulds are still
available today.
It all started back in 1849 for Molinard where
five generations have succeeded one
another. Celebrating its 165th birthday
this year, the house is based in the
fragrant-filled town of Grasse in the
south of France, which can trace its
perfume story back to the 16th century
with the leather industry. When scented
gloves became all the rage, local farmers
supplied Grasse with local essential
oils. The soil around Grasse is rich
and jasmine, centifolia rose and
plants of the mimosa family soon
abounded to meet the demands of
the burgeoning perfume industry.
Molinard Jeune set up shop in the
centre of Grasse in 1849 and the
fashionable ventured inside for the
enticing Eau de Cologne made by
Hyacinthe Molinard. Queen Victoria
even stopped in at one point. It was at
that stage in 1894, that Albert Sittler,
the ancestor of the Lerouge-Bénard family that
owns Molinard today, purchased the shop.
Created in 1921 as a perfume for masking
cigarettes, Habanita became a success as a
perfume in its own right and a great hit with
the flappers. It was tucked into a black glass Art
Deco bottle emblazoned with a frieze of nymphs
and designed by Lalique. It remains a French
signature fragrance today along side Habanita
Esprit, dressed in white, a lighter take on the
original heady number.
Lanvin’s Arpège, a flamboyant floral has been
both classic and iconic since it was brought out
in 1927, with Lanvin planning a special edition
to celebrate the house’s 125th anniversary
this year. Jeanne Lanvin wanted to offer her
daughter, Marie-Blanche, a superb gift for her
30th birthday, and so she called upon the
great perfume-maker André Fraysse
to create a sumptuous bouquet.
Essences like jasmine, rose, and
ylang-ylang came together in the gift
for Marie-Blanche, a virtuoso musician,
hence the name of the perfume Arpège
(arpeggio). And nearly 90 years after
the original Arpège, Lanvin brings us
Eclat d’Arpège Pretty Face, imagined
by the house’s artistic director Alber
Elbaz. The fresh and joyful scent
is encased in a very happy bottle
replete with purple eyes and a
mauve ribbon.
Meanwhile, new, enticing names
continue to appear on the fragrance
horizon. Liquides Imaginaires, for
example, celebrates the mystique,
mystery and magic of perfume,

from the sacred and ritualistic properties of
perfume. Creator Philippe Di Méo joined forces
with David Frossard, regarded as the distributor-
philosopher, to bring out two trilogies of six
unusual and very enticing fragrances and interior
scents. These are spellbinding aromas, a case in
point being those of the Eaux Sanguines trilogy
drawing its inspiration from holy wines in rich
colours of burgundy and blood red. The house
also makes scented candles like Sang Noir,
evoking the scent of the forest at night.
Meanwhile, maker of fine pens and luxury
accessories, Montblanc launched one of the
most successful new perfumes of 2013, Legend,
fruity, floral and musky all at once, for women,
as a companion of its first foray into perfume
making with Legend for men in 2011.
Paris has gone a step beyond for perfume
with the boutique Jovoy, an original and
very beautiful boutique devoted to rare and
unusual perfumes. Powerful patchouli, sublime
fragrances from the house of Amouage, born
in the Sultanate of Oman, and Grossmith of
London that supplied the royal family in the 19th
century are among the fabulous finds brought
together by François Hénin along with Jovoy’s
own line of six perfumes. Also on hand are the
perfumes of L.T. Piver, founded in 1774 and
regarded as the oldest French perfume house
still in existence. You can also organise a private
visit, for a minimum of six people,
of the boutique while enjoying champagne
and macarons.
The city of Versailles, by going back to its
perfume roots has gone a step ahead with its
Cour des Senteurs where the visitor can journey
into a fragrant world of savours, flavours and
scents. It brings together in one place, just
100 metres from the Chateau, rare fragrances,
traditions, know-how and the raw materials that
make up the universe of perfume making. The
delightful promenade begins with the Jardin
des Senteurs, The Scented Garden, which takes
the visitor on a journey through a secret garden
harbouring no less than 200 fragrant species of
flora. Also found inside the courtyard devoted
to perfume one finds the Maison des Parfums,
the House of Perfume, which recounts the
history of perfume and its close links with the
city of Versailles. Four leading houses of French
luxury whose products feature fragrance have
also opened their doors in the midst of the
courtyard. Guerlain, which has since 1828 been
bringing the world fine beauty products and
perfumes has a boutique featuring a jasmine-
based perfume in homage to Marie Antoinette
that can only be found in the store. Lenôtre
offers a fine array of its savoury and sweet treats
among them a jasmine macaron in honour of
Marie Antoinette. Diptyque brings its wonderful
scents for the home to the courtyard with a
special boxed set of three small scented candles
in tune with the fragrance garden outside while
Maison Fabre, founded 90 years ago, presents its
collection of perfumed gloves.
Marie Antoinette indulged in floral scents:
jasmine, rose, lily and violet. Jean-Louis Forgeron
the celebrated master perfumed glove-maker
offered the style-setting queen a pair and a new
fashion was launched. It is a fashion that comes
down to us today at the Librairie des Princes
for the enchanting boutique of the Chateau
of Versailles is carrying Marie Antoinette’s
line of perfumed gloves in lamb skin, hand-
embroidered and lined with silk. Meanwhile,
Maison Fabre was invited by the Réunion des
Musées Nationaux (the French national museum
authority) to create a limited edition collection
of perfumed gloves exclusively for the chateau’s
Lanvin’s Eclat d’Arpège Pretty Face (above)

18. Walking in the footsteps of Van Gogh, the
visitor to Auvers will discover a world akin to
an open-air museum where the settings, vistas
and landscapes look very much the way they
did when Van Gogh painted them. Historic
monuments and museums await including the
town’s church immortalised on canvas by the
artist, the 17th century Chateau of Auvers, the
studio of the painter Daubigny, the house of Dr.
Gachet, Van Gogh’s doctor and also an artist, and
the Auberge Ravoux where the painter’s tiny
bedroom, his last bedroom, is found.
Many of these venues are putting on special
exhibitions and programmes during the season
and all of the places are within walking distance
from one another in the town offering a

olling fields of wheat, en eerily
familiar church, a wending and
bending river, the mighty Oise.
These are the postcard settings
found due north of Paris and
whose ethereal beauty was
interpreted on canvas by Vincent van Gogh.
Today, those works are found in leading
museums of the world.
Since the 19th century, the beauty of Auvers-
sur-Oise has attracted major artists drawn by
the sparkling light and the ever-changing
reflections of the Oise River upon which the
town sits. Daubigny, Cézanne and above all Van
Gogh passed through this hamlet nestled at the
gateway to the scenic Vexin region of France. The
charming town of Auvers-sur-Oise is dedicating
its cultural season this year to one of its most
illustrious residents: Vincent van Gogh. Located
just 30 kilometres from the French capital, this
rural village owes its world renown to Van Gogh
who in a letter to his brother Theo wrote, “Auvers
is seriously beautiful, it is deep country, typical
and picturesque.” He would paint nearly 80 works
there in less than 70 days and among those
canvases are some of the artist’s greatest works
like the Church at Auvers, Wheat Field with
Crows and the Portrait of Dr. Gachet. Van Gogh
died in Auvers-sur-Oise, just 70 days after he
arrived there, on July 29th 1890, from a self-
inflicted gunshot wound and was subsequently
buried there.

TAILORED LUXURY BY
EMANUEL BERG
The world of the luxury shirt has found its home at
140 Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré
Working with William Figaret, the son of Alain
Figaret, the founder of the French luxury
shirt-maker, the house of Emanuel Berg
aims to offer its clients the best expertise in
shirt tailoring. In the spacious and elegantly
designed new boutique both ladies and
gentlemen will find a plethora of shirts
to choose from, whether off-the-rack or
bespoke, the perfect shirt awaits here.
Clients can choose from a selection of 1000
different fabrics, 60 different collar styles and
35 different cuffs to create their bespoke
shirt. Tailored from mostly Italian fabrics
including Albini and Thomas Mason, the
shirts are put together in Poland and are
delivered within a fortnight.
The family-run fashion house also offers
elegant accessories complementing the
tailored shirts, including chic cufflinks, socks
and beautiful headscarves for the ladies.
Monograms in different fonts and colours
can also be subtly embroidered into the
shirts, adding an even more personalised
touch to the shirts.
With a large foreign clientele, Emanuel Berg
understand the importance of impeccable
service and with that in mind delivery of
bespoke shirts can be organised anywhere
in the world, bringing luxury service to your
doorstep.

TIME FOR
TRAVELLERS
WATCHES
World travellers will delight in the
latest high couture watch to emerge
from Jaeger-LeCoultre’s cutting edge
workshops in Switzerland. The new
version of the Duomètre Unique Travel
Time, in sumptuous pink gold, is the first
watch to combine user-friendly access
to the world’s time zones as it offers
a flexible setting of the time in your
destination zone to the nearest minute
with precision coming through the
house’s Dual Wing concept. The watch
displays the time of reference along with
the time in a second time zone with the
hour indicated digitally by a jumping
hour disc while the minutes are indicated
by hand. Once both time zones are
synchronised, the traveller can simply
use the push at eight and ten o’clock
to adjust the jumping hours in the left
sub dial depending upon the country of
destination. A beautifully crafted globe
on the watch face reveals the time zones
on the planet Earth surrounded by a day/
night ring while the watch’s sapphire
crystal case-back reveals the exceptional
decoration of the movement. –P.V.

BEAUTY HAVENS
RELAXED
HAIRDavid Mallet, he is the famous Australian hairdresser
everyone wants to have cut their hair but one of his
best-kept secrets is Emmanuelle, his hair treatment
queen. Her hands are magic. Treating your hair to a hot
oil treatment suited to your hair needs, she diagnoses
your tresses and aims to tenderly relieve your hair
of any damage caused to it by stress or the harsh
weather, which can leave it feeling dry. As she works
the hot oil into your mane, it is not just your hair being
cared for but you are simultaneously being treated to
a wonderful head massage. And as she leaves the oil
to work its magic on your tresses her hands work their
magic on your shoulders and hands as she treats them
to a very relaxing massage. The hour-long treatment,
which is followed by a blow-dry, is applied in a private
cabin of the hair salon and will leave you, and your
hair, feeling relaxed and beautified. And with David’s
Aussie influence at play, the staff here, while working in
quite the posh salon where
a month-long waiting list
is the norm, are very
welcoming and offer
service with a smile.
