Sit + Store
furniture element
– client brief
■ Unique element of free-standing furniture
■ Combines functions of sitting or resting
whilst providing storage for items such as
books and/or other home/work media
■ Placed inside an existing space
■ Creative, flexible and easy to construct
solution

RESEARCH AND
CONCEPT
DEVELOPMENT

First, I started with the visual research. I gathered some inspiration
by searching through modular and multifunctional pieces of
furniture.
Inspiration

Concepts ■ Inspirational images that I gathered made me think of a
few ideas found below.
Idea taken from these
images and changed to
shelves on both sides with
foldable laptop desk and a
reclining option.

■ Idea of a reclined rocking chair with a reading lamp and book storage underneath
(secured so that the books don't move while the chair is rocking).

■ Finally, I decided to look for inspiration in other areas and came up with these two ideas
– 'baby rocker' and 'wedges shoes' inspired.

Ergonomics ■ To establish ergonomics for my 'Sit + Store' unit, I researched chair
ergonomics and human anthropometric measurements to be able to
create a comfortable piece of furniture.
The drawing illustrates

position. Based on these I
was able to determine the
size of my 'Sit + Store' unit.

MATERIALS

Final Design
Concept

Materials
Desk mounted
on hinges that
allow for easy
folding against
the back of the
unit if required.
Flexible,
adjustable
lamp in
brushed copper
finish, that can
be used over
the sitting part
as well as over
the desk.
Frame and
shelves made
with bent and
layered sheets
of plywood.
Seat and
recliner stool's
padding
upholstered in
grey leather.

Function and usage
■ The design provides a multifunctional solution.
■ It is a free standing piece of furniture which can be used for resting as
well as reading.
■ The desk at the back provides additional space for undertaking office
related tasks.
■ The lamp mounted on top provides sufficient light for reading in the dark.
It is adjustable and flexible and can be moved to also provide task
lighting over the desk.
■ The moderate dimensions allow for it to fit in smaller as well as larger
spaces.
■ It can be placed in an home study or used as a reading nook. It can also
be placed in a living room where it can be used as a book shelf and TV
watching chair.
