  2. 2. 2 Summary of findings Rise in the global ultra wealthy population and its total wealth In 2016, the world’s ultra high net worth population grew by 3.5% to 226,450 Their combined wealth also increased by 1.5% to $27trn North America and Asia are the growth front-runners as Latin America falters There were sharp regional fluctuations in dollar-denominated wealth creation North America and Asia recorded the only significant rises in wealth in 2016 (+5.1% and +3.5% respectively) Diverging performance across the world’s major economies Currency movements were a key driver of UHNW wealth trends in 2016 US, Japan, India and Indonesia experienced solid gains for the world’s wealthiest while those in the UK, Russia, Mexico and Brazil suffered substantial losses Buoyed by a stronger dollar, rising equity markets and a robust tech sector, the US consolidated its dominant position as the world’s leading UHNW country The NewYork metropolitan area bolstered its position as the world’s largest UHNW city Hong Kong and Tokyo both maintained their top-three city status London remains the largest UHNW city in Europe but its lead over Paris narrowed sharply Though China has the world’s third-largest ultra wealthy population, Shanghai came in as only joint 29th largest UHNW city, emphasising that robust wealth creation is occurring not just within China’s top-tier cities

  4. 4. 4 Total UHNW figures increased – with rising population numbers and total wealth Global UHNW population and wealth change § In 2016, the global ultra wealthy population grew by 3.5% to 226,450 individuals, a partial recovery from a sharp fall a year earlier § Their combined wealth also increased in 2016, expanding by 1.5% to $27trn § The average net worth of the ultra wealthy declined for the first time since 2013 § With the exception of Latin America and the Caribbean, all regions globally showed growth or stability in GDP and stock markets § However, all regions experienced currency depreciation against the US$ § The growth in UHNW population and wealth in each region will be determined by the net outcome of these competing effects
  5. 5. 5 North America is home to over 36% of the world’s UHNW population, Europe to 28% Where the ultra wealthy are – regional distribution
  6. 6. 6 Almost half of the global ultra wealthy population had a net worth of between $30m and $50m § Billionaires account for just 1.1% of the total number of ultra wealthy individuals but control almost 28% of the world’s combined ultra wealth § All tiers of global ultra wealthy population expanded in size and recorded an increase in net worth with the exception of billionaires § Billionaires registered a 3.1% decline in numbers and 3.7% hit to their combined US dollar wealth Wealth distribution amongst UHNWs
  7. 7. 7 The top 30 countries account for around 93% of both the world’s ultra wealthy population § Of the top 30 countries, 12 are in Europe, nine are in Asia, four are in the Middle East, two are in North America and two in Latin America, and one is in the Pacific region § The leading five countries (the US, China, Japan, Germany and the UK) account for almost 57% of the global ultra wealthy population and just short of 55% of UHNW wealth § US, Japan, India and Indonesia experienced solid gains for the world’s wealthiest while those in the UK, Russia, Mexico and Brazil suffered substantial losses Top UHNW countries
  8. 8. 8 Global financial cities dominate the list of top UHNW locations § The NewYork metropolitan (metro) area bolstered its position as the world’s largest UHNW city in 2016, with the number of ultra wealthy individuals rising strongly to more than 8,300 § Two other global financial hubs, Hong Kong and Tokyo, maintained their top-three city status, with the Japanese capital recording the largest increase in UHNW population (in percentage terms) of all 30 leading cities § NewYork and Hong Kong were also the top two billionaire cities as cited in our recent Billionaire Census 2017, though Tokyo was ranked lower, in 16th position § London remains the largest UHNW city in Europe but its lead over Paris narrowed sharply Top UHNW cities

  10. 10. 10 By 2021, we expect the global ultra wealthy population to total 299,000, an increase of 72,550 over 5 years Five year forecast in UHNW population and wealth §The level of UHNW wealth is projected to rise to $35.7trn, which implies an additional $8.7trn of newly created wealth over the next five years
