Tenses:
1. The farmers grow rice  simple present: am/is/are
Rice is grown by the farmers.
2. The farmers grew rice  simple past: was/were
Rice was grown by the farmers.
3. The farmers can grow rice modals: be
Rice can be grown by the farmers.
4. The farmers have grown rice  present perfect: been.
Rice has been grown by the farmers.
5. The farmers are growing rice  present continuous:
am/is/are being
Rice is being grown by the farmers.
PRACTICE 1
Change these sentences into passive.
1. A journalist wrote these articles a month ago.
2. Today many people speak English.
3. The government has changed the regulations
since 2006.
4. Ms Peters is printing the reports right now.
5. The company must sell the computers next
week.
PRACTICE 2 …
A. Identify these sentences whether they are active
or passive. Then, identify the tenses also.
1. The books were taken by John.
2. He signed the letters.
3. The two packages were checked by my secretary
4. The secretary opens the letters.
5. The committee is considering the proposals.
6. Two buildings have been constructed by that
company.
