  2. 2. 02InSight weekly // North America // August 10 2016 // Company Confidential Finishing its biggest deal to date, Chemicals and Energy gets a Texas high-five The company’s Turnaround and MRO Services business recently completed its most lucrative project yet, helping to prepare 280 miles of natural gas pipeline for commissioning in Mont Belvieu, Texas. “It was a very demanding timeline but we worked around the clock, and safely, finishing 38 hours ahead of schedule,” said Brian Kubalik, Program Manager, Chemicals Energy – Americas. “Getting the business was very competitive and most service providers bidded on this project, but we won it with a cross-functional team and everybody did a good job.” Linde’s role in the pipeline project, which is roughly located near the Dallas-Fort Worth Airport, was to use specialized equipment and nitrogen to clean, purge and pressure-up a 30-inch-diameter pipeline to ready it to safely transport natural gas. “Mont Belvieu is the world’s largest gas processing region and it was great to be able to support the country’s energy independence,” said Kubalik. Linde’s portion of the project took nine-and-a-half days. It delivered and pumped about 120 million standard cubic feet of nitrogen during the course of the project. The companies Linde worked with were pleased. “From a field standpoint the N2 purge went off without an incident,” wrote Kenny Green, a Construction Manager on the project. “Good communications and first-class operation.” “All went very well was the report I have heard,” wrote Dave Runte, Senior Project Director with Texas- based Energy Transfer, owner and operator of the pipeline. “I also gave you all a great review with our operations folks as well.” Added Jeremy Henson, Energy Solutions Operations Manager, “This was a complete Linde team effort and I wanted to highlight the support that the America’s Operations Center Scheduling Team and the Supply Chain Management team provided for this project. We utilized Energy Solutions personnel from Texas and Pennsylvania to complete this project and their ability to work together as one operational team was critical to successfully complete a project of this magnitude.” Linde news archives for North America Internal Job Opportunities... 3. 3. 03InSight weekly // North America // August 10 2016 // Company Confidential Summer interns focus on valuable work and finishing projects Forty five strong and from multiple schools across the U.S., the company’s interns have been immersed in their work and, with only a week remaining, are preparing to make their final presentations. They recently attended a presentation skills training session, conducted in-person for those in the area and virtually for others. The group presentations are scheduled for this week in the Bridgewater, New Jersey headquarters, where a variety of managers will listen, learn and react. The interns’ work locations include Oregon, Washington, Texas, Illinois, Indiana, Arizona, Georgia and New Jersey. Working across a wide variety of business units, their areas of study include chemical, biomedical, industrial and mechanical engineering, mining, supply chain and finance. They are from Arizona State, Carnegie Mellon, Georgia Tech, Lafayette, NC State, Oregon State, Rutgers, Susquehanna University, University of Texas – Austin, Augsburg, Cornell, Johns Hopkins, Ohio State, Penn State, Stevens, University of Pittsburgh, West Virginia University and others. The internship program began with a three-day orientation. Interns met with their managers, introduced themselves to fellow interns and learned about the group presentations they will be making before they leave. Alexa Anderson, a Biomedical Engineering major at West Virginia University, noticed Linde at a Society of Women Engineers conference and was instantly attracted to its involvement in such organizations. “I had a wonderful first impression from the Linde representatives I met at the conference, which reflected very well on the company,” she said. While working in Healthcare, Anderson said the internship has provided her with a better understanding of the role of an engineer in the commercial side of business, “which is not something that can simply be taught from a textbook.” Walid Omer, a Mechanical Engineering intern from the Georgia Institute of Technology, said he was attracted to the company because it was clear Linde “has a culture that supports learning and development on the job and also it is technologically innovative.” North Carolina State University Intern Ryan Robinson, who is working with Electronics and Premium Products, was attracted to Linde because it is global. He’s been working on piping and instrumentation diagrams. “I have enjoyed my experience because of how much I have learned about myself,” he said. “I also feel like the best learning experience was being given a task and not knowing at first how I was going to complete it, but having to find a way to get it done.” Intern Karolina Patryn, a senior at Rutgers University studying Supply Chain Management with a minor in German, became interested in Linde while attending a supply chain career expo. “The safety measures Linde takes attracted me,” Patryn said. “I am the Supply Chain Planning Intern this summer and my main objective was to focus on non-standard trips. I developed a tool to compare trips and minimize costs. I greatly appreciate the opportunity.” Intern Chris Bettner, a Lafayette College Mechanical Engineering student working in Reliability Engineering, said he first learned about Linde from a Lafayette alumni who went on to work for the company. “I have a great desire to work for a company that shares my governing morals and allows me to feel a sense of purpose in my work,” Bettner said. “Linde's strong role in the industrial gases market means that it affects virtually every aspect of life.” One of Bettner’s projects has been to identify “failure modes” such as corrosion and fouling in fixed equipment, which doesn’t move or rotate, and developing inspection programs. Marcus Pugliese, an Engineering Intern and student at Lehigh University studying Chemical Engineering and Finance, has been working on pushing Engineering Management of Change (EMOC) processes to completion and helping to ensure plant schematics are accurate. “My experience overall has been very positive,” Pugliese said. “One thing I have noticed is that no matter what position a person is in, people have been willing to take time to help me if I need it, which speaks to a collaborative culture.” The students will soon interview for full-time positions. 4. 4. 04InSight weekly // North America // August 10 2016 // Company Confidential Company pilots enhanced solution for global trade compliance The Linde Group is rolling out a new SAP module to enhance trade compliance globally. Starting in late July, Linde began its first pilot of the tool, nicknamed “Project TRACE,” in the Electronics group in Region Americas (RAS). What is trade compliance? Trade compliance is about ensuring that we do business properly and legally with countries, companies and individuals. It ensures that we only do business with the right entities and ensures that we comply with applicable export and import regulations. “TRACE will provide much-needed automation and sophistication for Linde in the export and customs area,” said Marcus Alston, Senior Counsel - Global Trade Compliance. Project TRACE covers four functions: • Screening: All business partners (vendors and customers) will automatically be screened to help ensure that Linde doesn’t do business with “denied” entities. Following the pilot, screening will be rolled out to all of Linde, including countries currently operating without SAP. • Export management, license determination and management: Some products Linde offers can only be sold under license or are restiricted based on the destination country. TRACE will check if a license is needed and if so, that the license requirements are not exceeded. • Customs management: Provides electronic integration, filing and communication with customs authorities. • Shipping document production and record keeping: This generates and maintains shipping docu- mentation such as invoices, bills of lading, and shipping declarations. Denied Party screening for RAS is being rolled out now starting with a pilot in the Electronics Group. Export management/licensing, customs, and shipping functionality are currently planned for the rest of the U.S. and Germany in 2017. So what does TRACE mean for you? Although TRACE will not visibly affect most of us, compliance is everyone’s responsibility. If you are involved with any process - such as sales, procurement, contract management, production, shipping and logistics, or master data management - that touches external partners, you directly affect Linde’s ability to comply with trade laws and regulations. TRACE will work in the background with our electronic data to support compliance with key export and customs requirements. For questions, concerns or comments, please contact Rebecca Dabkowski, RAS Trade Compliance Manager, or Marcus Alston, Global Trade Compliance Officer. 5. 5. 05InSight weekly // North America // August 10 2016 // Company Confidential A new style of training to steer the company toward a brighter future The RAS People Capability team took the first critical step in the journey to transforming Region America’s training culture, introducing a highly engaging, high-energy, participant-centered approach to learning. Training Managers and People Capability Specialists from Operations and Transport successfully completed an intensive three-day “boot camp” in Charleston, South Carolina presented by the Bob Pike Group, an industry leader in learning and development. Attendees included Gilles Cloutier, People Capability Specialist, RAS; Howard Schultz, Regional Process Safety Training Manager, North America; Jeff Pugatch, Transport People Capability Manager, North America; and Ed Windsor, Refurbishment Shop Maintenance Training Program Manager, North America. They learned 102 techniques to open, close, revisit and energize learning activities and techniques to keep learners engaged and increase retention. The course also provided a systematic approach to divide learning into three categories; need to know, nice to know and where to find. “This simple approach will help focus learning activities on critical knowledge and skills and decrease the amount of information we currently try to cover,” said James Rhodes, Head of People Capability for Region Americas, who organized the training. “To develop a successful learning opportunity, we must focus on what is relevant to the learner, then select the best methods to engage at every level. Learning is a voluntary activity; the participant-centered approach drives engagement and improves retention and performance.” Rhodes said the training was an important first step toward professionalizing the development and delivery of technical training at Linde. “We’re positioning ourselves to ensure we can exceed our customers’ expectations and enhance safety and reliability while meeting our financial targets,” he said. “The next step is for the attendees to use these new techniques to develop or improve training that is currently being delivered. We have several training initiatives underway and I am excited to model this new approach.” If you are interested in attending or have employees who would benefit from attending this course, please contact Rhodes for more information at James.rhodes@linde.com or 908-517-6951.
