2. What is my Project?
• My Project is to create a survival/horror game
based around Southwestern themes and
mythos, as well as usage of the Myers-Briggs
Type Indicator for gameplay and setting
elements. The title of this project is Paraiso.
3. What is MBTI?
• The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator is a questionnaire developed around the theory of Carl Gustav Jung.
• The model is based around a distinct set of archetypes that are integral to one’s character. These range from the following:
– E – Extraversion preferred to introversion: ESTJs often feel motivated by their interaction with people. They tend to
enjoy a wide circle of acquaintances, and they gain energy in social situations (whereas introverts expend energy).
– S – Sensing preferred to intuition: ESTJs tend to be more concrete than abstract. They focus their attention on the
details rather than the big picture, and on immediate realities rather than future possibilities.
– T – Thinking preferred to feeling: ESTJs tend to value objective criteria above personal preference. When making
decisions, they generally give more weight to logic than to social considerations.
– J – Judgment preferred to perception: ESTJs tend to plan their activities and make decisions early. They derive a sense
of control through predictability.
– I – Introversion preferred to extraversion: INFPs tend to be quiet and reserved. They generally prefer interacting with a
few close friends rather than a wide circle of acquaintances, and they expend energy in social situations (whereas
extraverts gain energy).
– N – iNtuition preferred to sensing: INFPs tend to be more abstract than concrete. They focus their attention on the
big picture rather than the details, and on future possibilities rather than immediate realities.
– F – Feeling preferred to thinking: INFPs tend to value personal considerations above objective criteria. When making
decisions, they often give more weight to social implications than to logic.
– P – Perception preferred to judgment: INFPs tend to withhold judgment and delay important decisions, preferring to
"keep their options open" should circumstances change.
• In total, there are sixteen possible character types under MBTI.
• For this project, the MBTI will be utilized at the beginning of the game to determine the player’s personality type, which will
then be applied to the main character and certain levels of the game.
• As the title at the beginning reads, this type will be set around the Introversive types (INFP), of which there are eight.
4. What is the Setup?
• The setup is simple. For every MBTI (Introversive) assessment, there is a
corresponding characterization of Paraiso’s main protagonist, Virgil Hunter,
alongside a depiction of a certain level that he must contend with. They will be
listed alongside the specified MBTI personality type. It is generally lined out as
such:

5. The Hero
• The main character is Virgil Hunter, a young Texas Ranger. He is the son of veteran Ranger Joseph
"Joe" Hunter, who is considered a legend among modern day Rangers due to his keen senses and
ability to get the job done, as well as seemingly incorruptible nature and dedication to justice.
• In reality however, Joe was a disillusioned fanatic who saw corruption in virtually every area
(including the law), which prompted him to take to extreme vigilante justice. As a result, for every
"good" deed he performed for Texas, many were left to suffer in his wake. This in itself resulted in
his death; during an arrest of a certain immigrant family, one that were suspected by Joe to have
been cartel runners, Joe would mysteriously end up shot and killed. Some claim that one of the
family members was missed in the initial arrest and had shot Joe before escaping, while others
claim Joe was shot in the back by one of his fellow Rangers. Either way, his death and lasting
influence would drive Virgil to become a Ranger himself.
• Now having been a Ranger for two years and counting, Virgil and his partner are called out to the
southern town of Paraiso to investigate the mysterious murder of a woman in the local church. Not
only must Virgil do what it takes to solve the murder, but he must also confront both the town's
mysterious connection to the supernatural, as well as his own inner demons along the way.
6. The Eclipse
• The Eclipse is a mysterious dimension of spacetime that will materialize within the
town of Paraiso. As with its namesake, it is represented by the Moon eclipsing over
the Sun, bathing Paraiso in pure darkness and other supernatural phenomena,
such as the demonic entities, known as "Kachina", that seem to inhabit it. It may
occur at any time of the day or night, in which case the Sun may "rise" earlier than
the prescribed dawn in order to be eclipsed. The trigger for the Eclipse is usually a
raven, which upon being observed by Virgil, will caw and then fly away to the
direction of the Sun, just before the Moon intersects.
• Similar to the Otherworld from Silent Hill, the world of the Eclipse is not set in
stone and may take different kinds of forms. This in itself is, again like the
Otherworld, reflective of Virgil's worst nightmares and personal issues, which he is
forced to confront here. Meanwhile, keeping with the southwestern theme of the
game, the kachina and decor tend to be based on Native American themes, but
still hold traditional forms of Gore, such as an emphasis on organics and
sharp/pointy attachments. And of course, beside the kachina, various traps may be
set across the landscape to ensnare Virgil as he continues.
7. ISTJ
• Quiet, serious, earn success by thoroughness and dependability. Practical, matter-of-fact, realistic,
and responsible. Decide logically what should be done and work toward it steadily, regardless of
distractions. Take pleasure in making everything orderly and organized – their work, their home,
their life. Value traditions and loyalty.
• Virgil is purely driven to be a Texas Ranger, to live up to the (perceived) image of his father.
Generally astute and dedicated to his work, yet unfriendly to just about everyone and something of
a neat freak. All of this, in itself, is a result of his admiring the image his father cultivated for himself
as a Ranger, and as a result Virgil is adamant about maintaining this image in his father's memory.
For this, he is willing to dismiss his father's corrupted nature and his actions towards his death.
• The Eclipse takes a fort-like form; featureless stone walls, straightened corridors, random sculptures
and statue-like designs lining them in symmetric arrangements. The accompanying kachina
appearing neat and orderly, as if soldiers in uniform, all "marching" or "flying" in synchronized
patterns. Generally everything is orderly and precise, but at the same time very much dark and
unfriendly. However, as Virgil progresses through the levels, random events may occur; floors
fracturing, the ceiling (if any) lifting away, the walls breaking apart and vanishing, random obstacles
falling into his path, earthquakes occurring at different times, etc.
• This all is symbolic of Virgil's uptight and precise nature, as well as his dedication to maintaining his
father's image while leaving little room for anything else. Likewise, just as his father's legacy is false,
so is the Labyrinth's structure, which will fragment and break apart as Virgil progresses.
8. ISFJ
• Quiet, friendly, responsible, and conscientious. Committed and steady in meeting their obligations.
Thorough, painstaking, and accurate. Loyal, considerate, notice and remember specifics about
people who are important to them, concerned with how others feel. Strive to create an orderly and
harmonious environment at work and at home.
• Virgil is somewhat easygoing, warm and polite to others around him, but at the same time
conscientious over being Joe Hunter's son and having to endure his father's legacy. Virgil is
dedicated to his work here, but is more into the comradery brought on by it than anything else.
Hates getting into unnecessary conflicts, especially with those he cares about, and as such goes out
of his way to make sure his father stays out of the conversation. In short, he tries to be a good guy
in spite of his baggage, which he continuously tries to keep at bay.
• The Eclipse takes the form of a vast desert, filled with strange structures that resemble graves,
giving the impression of a cemetery. Zombie-like kachina constantly rise from the ground, taking
the form of various people in Virgil's life (including his father), speaking damnations to him while
attacking. They may move to overwhelm Virgil in droves. Meanwhile, the usual traps remain as
well, while the sand and structures may shift uncontrollably upon Virgil's approach.
• This Eclipse is symbolic of Virgil's attempts to bury his past demons, only for them to come back to
haunt him, while the monsters represent his fear of his friends and family turning on him upon
learning his secrets. As well, the barren cemetery represents Virgil's fear of loneliness and his
potentially being abandoned and forgotten by those he cares about, while the shifting sand reflects
his churning emotions upon confronting his personal conflicts.
9. INFJ
• Seek meaning and connection in ideas, relationships, and material possessions. Want to understand what
motivates people and are insightful about others. Conscientious and committed to their firm values. Develop a
clear vision about how best to serve the common good. Organized and decisive in implementing their vision.
• Virgil is intelligent and morally committed, acting as a Ranger to do good in the world. As such, he is the dictionary
definition of a good cop, totally incorruptible in nature and dedicated to defending the (perceived) innocent, yet
not as zealous as his late father. As such, he is totally adverse to corruptive behavior of any kind and has difficulty
"looking the other way", which puts him off with certain other Rangers. In that regard, he strives to follow his
father's "just" ideals, which causes those around him (the ones who know of Joe Hunter's true character) to fear
that he may turn out just like him.
• The Eclipse takes the form of a prison-like facility, with an emphasis on stone, iron and heat (not unlike your
standard southwestern prison). Kachina are constantly locked up in tombs and catacombs only to be unleashed
upon Virgil's approach, while various torture devices lie about to ensnare him. Beings in this domain may take the
form of innocent humans that somehow got caught in this realm, only to warp into full demonic forms as a result
of Virgil's proximity. As well, electricity is a constant in this place, as various wires run across the walls, floor and
doorways, generating random bursts of lightning at any given time.
• This Eclipse is symbolic of Virgil's dedication to crime and punishment, to his wanting to see the bad guys locked
away and properly punished. In this regard, the various torture devices, no matter how cruel and unusual in
nature, are reflective of Virgil's lack of mercy toward criminals. Naturally, this is tempered by the kachina that take
the form of suffering humans before properly mutating, espousing the possibility that Virgil, just like Joe before
him, may become so overzealous in his quest for justice that he may see innocent people as criminals by default
as well.
10. INTJ
• Have original minds and great drive for implementing their ideas and achieving their goals. Quickly
see patterns in external events and develop long-range explanatory perspectives. When committed,
organize a job and carry it through. Skeptical and independent, have high standards of competence
and performance – for themselves and others.
• A rising star within the Ranger community, Virgil is a born leader and innovator. He is able to
organize and accomplish a task spectacularly, while also retaining an acute sense to patterns and
behaviors and being quite capable of utilizing them. That being said, he's also a "hardass" in every
sense of the word, as he expects everyone to comply with his demands as well as see the "big
picture" the way he sees it, while becoming agitated when they fail to. He also lacks patience in this
regard.
• The Eclipse takes the form of a western ghost town, with various wooden buildings and structures.
As if a result of time, the buildings are all shoddy and poorly constructed, which results in them
breaking down frequently, but in strange and random ways; for example, a building that may seem
to crumbling may end up exploding with wooden and glass shards going everywhere, only to
reverse and reassemble itself back to its original state. As well, the kachina here are quite cunning
and may end up setting traps or ambushes for Virgil as he moves through.
• This Eclipse seems to hold Virgil's innovative and forward thinking mindset in mockery; the
buildings are ancient, archaic and falling apart, the kachina are difficult to predict in action yet are
cunning enough that they may predict Virgil and even laws of physics seem to be warped by the
setting as a contrast to Virgil's logical mindset. Because of this, Virgil has very little in this plane to
utilize, and as such is forced to survive by taking almost random and callous acts, moving almost
totally away from his usual character.
11. ISTP
• Tolerant and flexible, quiet observers until a problem appears, then act quickly to find workable
solutions. Analyze what makes things work and readily get through large amounts of data to isolate
the core of practical problems. Interested in cause and effect, organize facts using logical principles,
value efficiency.
• An introvert by every stretch of the imagination, Virgil prefers to throw himself into his work.
Analytical and high perceptive, he's more akin to a Sherlock Holmes style detective than he is a
Ranger, but this in itself makes him invaluable to the service. In that regard, he is very much socially
awkward and is almost unable to interact with others outside of his work. Complicating this is his
slight agoraphobia (fear of crowds); he can operate in them initially, but overtime he may become
frantic and breakdown.
• The Eclipse takes the form of a giant pueblo, with towering buildings and vast streets. The buildings
may be apparently made out of stone (similar to cliff dwellings) or putty, while the streets hold
various traps and hellish inventions. Likewise, kachina are plentiful in this setting and may serve to
attack Virgil in groups and overwhelm him. Along with this, some more "ghostly" kachina may
possess the buildings and turn them into entities unto themselves, such as giant hands that may
reach out and squash Virgil or a massive stone cougar that may prowl the streets after him. And as
usual, the plane is quite unstable and may fragment or act in other random motions upon Virgil's
approach.
• Obviously, this Eclipse plays on Virgil's fear of crowds and activity; between the massive amounts of
kachina and the possibly living buildings, tranquility is nonexistent here. Likewise, if Virgil attempts
to attack one or few kachina, many more will group toward him in their place; a warped reflection
of Virgil's attempts to push people away, which only causes them to put more force into their
efforts.
12. ISFP
• Quiet, friendly, sensitive, and kind. Enjoy the present moment, what’s going on around them. Like
to have their own space and to work within their own time frame. Loyal and committed to their
values and to people who are important to them. Dislike disagreements and conflicts, do not force
their opinions or values on others.
• A very liberal person (in the real definition of the word), Virgil is a man who prefers not to get
involved unless necessary or on the job, and even then works from his own beat. While a gifted
Ranger, he tries not to overinvest in things as they tend to hurt (like his father's passing), yet those
that have managed to reach him have earned his undying loyalty. Beyond that, he is quite unsure
and at times indecisive, sometimes feeling that he cannot escape his father's shadow nor become
his own unique self. As well, he tends to back down from a potential conflict more, at least unless
he has something to fight for.
• Eclipse - The Eclipse takes the form of a mountain, with an emphasis on rock and dirt. To get to the
end, Virgil must hike up this mountain, all the while obstructions such as falling boulders and
kachina hound him, and the path itself is not always clear. Likewise, earthquakes tend to be
frequent and parts of the mountain may fall away, leaving cliffsides for Virgil to transverse. All this
while, every so often, Virgil may see his father on the mountainside, as well as hear his voice echo
down from its peak.
• This Eclipse is symbolic of Virgil's fear of involvement and dedication, as he is given a mountain to
climb, which requires much time and energy on his part for unsure results. Likewise, the kachina
and obstructions that move into his path are reflective his personal doubts, which keep him from
advancing in life and getting through its challenges. Meanwhile, Joe appearing on the mountain and
his voice echoing from the summit are representative of how much "higher" Joe is compared to his
son, with Virgil feeling he is unable to match his father in anything.
13. INFP
• Idealistic, loyal to their values and to people who are important to them. Want an external life that is congruent
with their values. Curious, quick to see possibilities, can be catalysts for implementing ideas. Seek to understand
people and to help them fulfill their potential. Adaptable, flexible, and accepting unless a value is threatened.
• Ambitious to a fault, Virgil sees that much is wrong with the world, and that he needs to right it. For this, he joined
the Rangers, but this will only serve as a stepping stone for him to move up in the social hierarchy, perhaps even
one day gain a position as Governor or more. Some people believe that Virgil is doing this for personal gain, but
this cannot be further from the truth; at his core character, Virgil is an idealist that is discontent with the current
system, and so only pursues advancement to see his vision through, both for his sake and those he fights for. Even
so, he is still good at his job, and though he sees his trip to Paraiso as another potential accomplishment to his
name, he is still dedicated to solving the murder and seeing justice served.
• The Eclipse takes the form of a canyon that, similar to Virgil's namesake, requires him to tread downward
perilously. As he moves forward, the kachinas he encounters become more and more powerful, while strange and
disturbing occurrences may occur from the cliffsides; for example, the image of a stone giant may morph from a
nearby cliff, which will then reach out to grab hold of Virgil, only to morph back into featureless rock once Virgil
evades its grasp. Meanwhile, the further Virgil progresses down the canyon, the further his body and mind seem
to stray from his humanity...
• While the other Eclipses are more or less symbolic of Virgil's current character, this one reflects the world his
ambitions are taking him into; as he advances further upon his goals, he takes a step downward into a world of
darkness and danger that he is otherwise unprepared to face. Likewise, the downward trek is also reprehensive of
how Virgil may lose his soul and being to his greater ambitions as he continues, for which he must take care to
retain himself or be lost forever.
14. INTP
• Seek to develop logical explanations for everything that interests them. Theoretical and abstract,
interested more in ideas than in social interaction. Quiet, contained, flexible, and adaptable. Have
unusual ability to focus in depth to solve problems in their area of interest. Skeptical, sometimes
critical, always analytical.
• Intellectual to a fault, Virgil sees life as a set of problems that must be solved. In this regard, he is
something of a "challenge junky", in which he finds great stimulation in observing and completing
problems, an attitude that he takes to criminal investigation. In this regard, the trip to Paraiso is no
different; just another murder for him to solve, with its own nuances for him to figure out. This in
itself puts him off with his partner, who sees him as uncaring toward the job at hand in spite of
being the son of Joe Hunter, but at the same time no one can contest Virgil's skills at crime solving.
• The Eclipse takes the form of a great, winding set of caverns that Virgil must tread through to reach
the exit. The caverns are modeled after gold mines, and thus contain various types of mining
equipment and machinery throughout their layout, while the kachinas that roam throughout the
caverns are based upon cave dwelling animals. Naturally, the environment is unstable, as cave ins
and earthquakes are frequent, alongside less "natural" events such as caverns rearranging their
direction and layout. Even more so, various types of machine based puzzles are laid throughout,
which Virgil must solve in order to progress...
• This Eclipse is representative of Virgil's love of challenges and problem solving, as well as his lack of
sociability or regard to humanity; there are many obstacles for Virgil to solve, but no human contact
(the kachinas are all based on animals instead of human types). The earthquakes and randomized
movements of the caverns expand upon this theme, creating a set of conditions that Virgil cannot
immediately solve and thereby keep him from getting to the exit too quickly.
