MTV was launched in 1981 and was the first time audiences saw music videos. The first music video played on MTV was "Video Killed the Radio Star" by The Buggles. Michael Jackson and Madonna helped establish the music video as an art form and a marketing tool in the 1980s with videos for songs from their albums Thriller and Like a Virgin. British artists also helped the growth of MTV in its early years by supplying videos when American artists were hesitant to embrace the new format. MTV expanded its programming beyond pop music in the late 1980s with shows focused on alternative rock, heavy metal, and hip hop genres.
