What to do in an
emergency
Emergency Management
Corrimal Beach Tourist
Park
WOLLONGONG| CITY OF INNOVATION
Emergencies can happen at any time.
They’re called emergencies because they’re
unexpected.
Thankfully, emergencies hardly ever
happen.
But, when they do, the reactions, decisions
and behaviours by all employees in the
workplace will have a direct impact on the
outcome.
In other words, your reactions, decisions and behaviours
during an emergency matter a lot.
WOLLONGONG| CITY OF INNOVATION
Learning Objectives
This module is provided for all employees working at Corrimal Beach Tourist Park,
Lake Parade East Corrimal so that you can respond appropriately in an emergency
at this facility.

• List the different types of emergencies that can occur
• Outline your responsibilities during an emergency
• Use the Emergency Procedures Guide to respond to an emergency
• Respond appropriately to alert tones used during an emergency
• Identify the nominated assembly area that you will go to in an emergency
• Describe your responsibilities once evacuated

Emergency Wardens
• This facility has nominated Emergency Wardens and First Aid Officers who are
well trained and accredited to undertake their roles.
• The Emergency Wardens details are displayed in the staff kitchenette.
• All employees should make themselves aware of who these officers are.
• The pictures below show you how to identify your Emergency Wardens during
an emergency.
WOLLONGONG| CITY OF INNOVATION
First Aid Officers
• First Aid Officers are well trained and accredited
in responding to medical emergencies.
• If a medical emergency occurs contact the First
Aid Officer.
• The details of the First Aid Officers are displayed
in the back staff kitchenette.

How to respond to an emergency
In an emergency always try to find your Emergency Warden first.
The Emergency Procedures Guide (Flipchart) shown below, provides basic
instructions on what to do for each emergency.
• Each emergency
event is allocated a
colour code
• Make sure your
flipchart has been
completed/filled in
and is near your
phone. This will
matter in an
emergency.
WOLLONGONG| CITY OF INNOVATION
Alert tones used in an emergency
There is one tone to be aware of at Corrimal Beach Tourist Park when an emergency
may be happening:
MEGAPHONE SIREN – Sounds similar to an air raid siren
Warning sounds are the first sign you will get that an emergency is taking place. It is
important to recognise this sound and respond appropriately.
This includes responding appropriately during a drill.
A drill is your opportunity to practice what to do if a real emergency occurs. Real
emergencies won’t give you this luxury.
WOLLONGONG| CITY OF INNOVATION
Air Raid Style Siren
This alert is a slower sound that rises in pitch then suddenly drops and starts again.
This alert requires you to respond immediately and safely, by moving to the closest
emergency assembly point.
Your Emergency Warden will advise you what to do.
During an evacuation or any emergency it is important to respond calmly and follow
directions of your Emergency Warden.
WOLLONGONG| CITY OF INNOVATION
Individual responses to emergency
During an emergency individuals have heightened reactions in response (fight, flight,
freeze.)
It is important to understand these reactions can affect the safe evacuation of all
employees.
To ensure the safety of all employee members, follow the directions of the Emergency
Warden or Emergency Service Responders (SES, Firefighters.)
Prepare yourself for a possible emergency so that if one happens, you have
rehearsed what you would do. Above all, remain calm, rational and follow
instructions.
Fight Flight Freeze
WOLLONGONG| CITY OF INNOVATION
Persons with special needs
During an emergency it can be hard to
evacuate the building due to people’s
physical conditions.
We have strategies in place for your safety
but these rely on you helping us plan in
advance.
You need to make it known to your
supervisor and Emergency Warden if you
are incapacitated in any way.
This includes temporary mobility issues
such as short term sports injuries,
psychological issues (such as anxiety) or
other mobility issues.
Do this at the time of the injury or
incapacitation; don’t wait until there is an
emergency.
WOLLONGONG| CITY OF INNOVATION
Types of Emergencies
Each emergency type is allocated a colour code:
• Evacuation – Code ORANGE
• Fire/Smoke – Code RED
• Bomb Threat – Code PURPLE
• Medical Emergency – Code BLUE
• Personal Threat – Code BLACK
• Internal Emergency – Code YELLOW
