Homeschooling - Every Home is a Classroom
It seems we hear people say it everywhere, “We
are homeschooling our children this year.”
How many children are homeschooled in the
United States? The statistics are as hard to track
as footprints in a blizzard in Escanaba. But this
we do know, the trail is widening and there is
more than a whisper in the woods coming from
our modern cabin‐school pioneers. There is
something effective about learning in the home
setting; Lutherans have been doing it for
hundreds of years.
Homeschooling, in its
widest sense, envelops
everything we do at home.
Parents may not know it,
but their kids are watching
their every move. Here is a
grown‐up version of what
we are talking about…
I heard a pastor tell of his work in a super
maximum prison. One inmate stared at him
every day. No matter what the pastor said to
the inmate, all the pastor got back was a
silent‐shunning. This went on for over two
years. One day the inmate asked the pastor
for some spiritual brochures. The pastor gave
him one. The next day he asked for a
Christian book. The next day the inmate
asked for another book. The relationship
went from silence to trust. When the pastor
got up his nerve, he asked the inmate, “Why
were you staring at me for almost two years,
never as much as saying, ‘Hi’”? The inmate
answered, “I was studying you to see if you
were authentic and could be trusted. Pastor,
every man in here is studying you to see if
you really are who you say you are.”
In healthy families, trust is where the
relationship with our folks begins, and hopefully
stays. Our children want to know that we are
trustable, that we are authentic, that we are
exactly who we say we are. Actually, they assume
it, and when they see we aren’t, we hurt them.
We are not talking about our parents teaching us
how to do the dishes or take out the trash. We
are talking about character traits. That is what
our children are really watching in us; more
importantly, our teaching the faith.
In our homes, will our children see in us humility
or pride? Will they see a know‐it‐all attitude, or a
humble gentle spirit that accepts criticism and is
not mean and critical of others...especially them?
It is in the home that our children learn the
genuine love of Christ.
Will they observe chastity or a moral looseness
in this department? As an example, when the
television program takes a path down Impurity
Avenue, will we ride along or decisively turn
down another street and explain to the children
why we made such a decision?
Will they see us being forgiving or holding
grudges against other, including them? Will they
watch us displaying self‐control or a life of un‐
control? As they watch, will they see us being

3. CONGREGATIONAL SURVEY RESULTS
Do you remember that 12 page survey you completed a year ago? Well, we now
have compiled the results and are ready to share them with you. Copies of the
compilation are available at the Welcome Center. If you receive this newsletter by
MAIL and want the results mailed to you as well, please contact Michelle in the
office at (920) 468-4065 to request a copy.
FRIDAY NIGHT FISH FRY AND
LENT
Our Saviour’s fish fry happens on the 2 nd Friday of
each month September thru May…everyone knows that, right? But did you
know that with the 2014 schedule, TWO Fridays fall within the Lenten
calendar (March 14 and April 11)? Did you also know that Fish Fry gift
certificates are available at the Welcome Center or from the church office?
Certificates can be for any amount (minimum $10) and are valid for one
year from the date of purchase. Say thanks to a friend, neighbor or coworker with a gift certificate and introduce them to what we call ‘the best
fish fry in town’!

SAY IT WITH FLOWERS
Why not put flowers on the altar to
honor a birthday, anniversary, or other
special occasion for which you want to
give thanks to God? It’s EASY! Just sign
up on the calendar in the
Flower Book on the shelf
at the west side of the
Narthex. Find the date
you want to sponsor,
write in the occasion for
the celebration, and
include your name (i.e.
Mary Jones’ 45th Birthday from the
Gary Wallace family or in loving
memory of John James from the Alex
Smith Family). The cost is $30. Place
your donation (checks payable to Our
Saviour) in an envelope, include your
name and envelope number and a note
that the donation is for altar flowers
and put it in the offering plate.
You may also bring your own flowers
and vase for display instead of having
the Flower Committee purchase them
for you. Please include a note with your
sponsorship that you will bring your
own.
You are encouraged to sign up at least
two (2) weeks prior to the date of your
special occasion (many weeks are open
now, but don’t wait too long!). After the
10:45am service on that day, you are
welcome to take the flowers home for
your enjoyment. We do ask that you do
not take the vases from church but
bring one from home to use for
transportation.
If you have any questions about this
procedure, please feel free to call
Michelle in the office at (920) 468-4065
or send an email to info@oslc-gb.org.

5. YOUR DONATIONS…WHO BENEFITS AND HOW?
There are many ways, other than cash, that you can provide help to Our Saviour Lutheran Church
and/or our missions, such as Green Bay Trinity Lutheran School and Camp Luther.
We collect items that some may say have no value…but we receive a monetary or other benefit so
please bring them to church and place in the appropriate box or drawer.
Empty ink jet cartridges are collected by Our Saviour AND Green Bay Trinity Elementary. To
donate to Our Saviour, place the cartridges in Secretary’s mailbox (outlined in red) in the office
hallway. To donate to GB Trinity, place them in the box on the cart in the main hallway.
Caps/Pouch certificates from Nature’s Touch (Kwik Trip) milk – These Moola caps and pouches
are worth $0.05 each to Green Bay Trinity.
Campbell’s products (among others) contain a ‘Labels for Education’ UPC symbol. Cut out the LFE
symbol with the UPC code. These are sent to and redeemed by Camp Luther; they receive office
supplies, camp equipment, etc. for the points redeemed (Note: Our Saviour is Camp Luther’s
BIGGEST donor of points so keep them coming!)
General Mills products contain ‘Box Tops for Education’ symbols. These are redeemed by Green
Bay Trinity Elementary for a dime each. Watch your grocery store ads for offers to receive bonus
Box Tops when you purchase 10 or 15 Box Top products. Watch the expiration dates on your Box
Tops and make sure to get them to church as soon as possible.
Tyson ‘Project A+’ labels are redeemed by Green Bay Trinity for $0.24 each.
Used cell phones are given to ‘Cells for Soldiers’. They are recycled for cash which is used to buy
phone cards which are then given to our military members stationed overseas.
Nonperishable food as well as personal care items and household cleaning supplies are
collected on an on‐going basis. These items are donated to Manna for Life as well as other homeless
shelters and non‐profits serving people in the area. The main focus year round is food but all of
these items are welcome at any time.
Manufacturers’ coupons, even those that are recently expired, can be used by military families
overseas. Bring in your manufacturers’ coupons to help the budget of our military families go
further; these families do not have the benefit of receiving coupons in the ‘Sunday paper’ like so
many of us. Don’t want to clip them? No worries…we have several volunteers that do that for us so
just bring in the sheets or packets and we will do the rest!
Comfort dolls, knit winter wear, wheelchair/walker bags, and many other handmade items
are donated to mission trips to Haiti and other areas as well as local charities or nursing homes. To
join the ‘Chicks with Stix’ mission, contact Caroline Arndt at 469‐3140.
Coke Points/Codes – Green Bay Trinity enters these codes for points that are redeemed for school
supplies, prizes and auction items. Codes can be found inside bottle tops from all Coke products as
well as multi‐pack cartons and Dasani Water overwraps (the code is in a large black box on the
bottom of the overwrap). You can also pledge your personal account points to Green Bay Trinity at
www.mycokerewards.com.

10. Usable / Saleable Donations Needed
Your donations to our rummage sales make them the great success that they have been for many years.
The Kids’ Only Sale, to be held on Saturday, May 17, is looking for the stuff your kids have outgrown as
well as the maternity clothes you no longer need. Toys, games, clothes, costumes, books, puzzles,
strollers, cribs, ride-on toys, bedding, bicycles, and more are welcome.
Don’t have kids but want to donate items to the church? The Super Sale will be SUPER if YOU help to
fill the gym for this event on August 16. We accept clean, usable, unbroken items. Some suggested things
are holiday decorations, linens, glassware, small appliances, tools, furniture, lamps, and more! Thanks for
the offer…but we DO NOT accept computer monitors, printers, televisions (unless they are flat panel) or
Encyclopedia-type books.
If you have larger items and are unable to transport them to church, call Michelle in the office at (920)
468-4065 to request a pick up. Pick-ups will be scheduled for late July or early August. Can’t wait that
long? Let us know your needs and we will see what we can do!
