Kwai Hing studio - Triennial Report 2020-2022

  1. 1. 1 Cultural Focus: Industrial artist from Kwai Hing experienced being an “academic hegemony” at CUHK Fine Arts under the pandemic Atelier de Belas-Artes do Vincent Lee Right after the “Good Night Show 2019” with Phoebus as the champion winner, all the studio artists including Vincent Lee Kwun-leung begin to encounter a very tough period of Coronvirus attack in a three-year onwards module. Vincent Lee explored certain transformations in self-entrepreneurship for his Kwai Hing studio, and these transformations were done in a basis without lifesaving duties at swimming pools. Vincent Lee has made a breakthrough about general clients’ perceptions that his studio is no longer a storage room but can be a party-room platform for expanding the personnel networks. More and more art lovers dare to engage in the cultural activities of Vincent Lee’s studio by recognizing it as a formal middle-and-small enterprise. Moreover, driven by the destiny of listening to an admission talk by Prof. Ho Siu-kee, Vincent Lee entered CUHK Fine Arts for furthering his MAFA studies to pursue lifelong learning, and he has consolidated his knowledgeable understanding on how the contemporary art market operates with regards to his distinguished 3.244 GPA results at FAA. Vincent Lee is able to outcry for prosperity despite of macro-viewed livelihood desperations.
  2. 2. 2 The cored direction for Vincent Lee to operate “Atelier de Belas-Artes do Vincent Lee” is to search for integration between an authoritativeness in academic excellence and a condensed mode of retailing entrepreneurship as similar as a convenient store. Vincent Lee does not mind responding to the entertainment trends as the fans-club culture can actually mobilize a united force of mutual support to enrich the advertising effect and activity strategies of his Kwai Hing studio. Moreover, Vincent Lee’s art tutorships cover both the internal courses for private students inside his Kwai Hing studio and the external courses at either community centres or secondary schools. Despite of his enthusiasm in education, Vincent can still sell paintings once receiving the commissioned project orders. INTERNAL TUTORSHIPS Do not underestimate the potentials of hand-drawn design as just a leisure from the DSE Visual Arts curriculum under a circumstance that lots of design firms manifest the digital-art technology of Photoshop and AutoCAD. Some aging ladies prefer a return to the primitive tradition for learning the illustration skills including the drawing of graphics and typographies as similar as the ideal of DesignFirst Institute. Between 2020 and 2021, two clients registered for the “Graphic Design Intensive Course” at “Atelier de Belas-Artes do Vincent Lee”. They learnt harmonious soft-pastel drawing, light drawing, Western calligraphy, watercolour floral-drawing design and floral decorative-pattern designs. One of the two clients felt rewarding in which her fruits of design creations could be dedicated to his Protestant acquaintances as encouraging Gospel souvenirs. Left: Harmonious Soft-Pastel Greeting Card Design / Right: Light Drawing
  3. 3. 3 Greeting-card design in Gothic fonts Prayer-writing practice in Gothic fonts
  4. 4. 4 Learnt the fundamental skills of watercolour infiltration effects Indeed, the fans-club culture facilitates more people to feel interested in learning portrait-drawing, as the corresponding fans can concretely draw the caricatures of their idols and it can actually with pragmatic purpose that can be applied to the design of fans-club supportive materials. A devoted fans of Keung B and Jer Lau registered for the “Portrait Drawing Intensive Course” at “Atelier de Belas-Artes do Vincent Lee”, and this student performed excellently by grasping the methodologies of proper anatomies. Vincent mostly applied what he learnt from Mr. John Li Tung-keung’s drawing education to eventually guide this Mirror-fans student how to explore pointillism, linear distributions and shadow fabrications. She could thus accomplish the idea of humorous features while drawing Keung B and Jer Lau as in-class practices. Vincent Lee’s in-class demonstrations during the “Portrait Drawing Intensive Course”
  5. 5. 5 Works by this Mirror-fans student Of course, with regards to his working experience at Galerie Le Createur, Vincent Lee warmly welcomed students to register for the art-jamming workshop at his Kwai Hing studio. Those tiny canvases being bought from Mongkok are not that expensive at all, and all the acrylic paint inside the studio can be freely used in which they can persist for several years without rapid exhaustion. So, the students could thoroughly relax under a romantic mood of pigment cultivation with chatting and beverage-drinking.
  6. 6. 6 Students’ work in art-jamming workshop EXTERNAL TUTORSHIPS The Civic Painting Society Camp opposes the introduction of animation culture to neo-figurative painting. However, these urban sketchers do not realize that the cartoon characters in teenage appearances provide legitimate anatomies for people to learn how to compose a human image. Pope Paul The Sixth College in Kwai Hing developed a long-sighted vision by employing Vincent Lee to teach comic-drawing skills among her Form 2, Form 3 and Form 4 students in an OLE module despite of pandemic turmoil. The whole Comic Drawing Workshop included four lessons for teaching how to draw four Sailormoon characters and two lessons for teaching how to draw Tokyo Ghoul characters. Indeed, different students demonstrated different styles of figurative expressions and you could see their ingenious creative thinking from their unique contexts during the critique session.
  7. 7. 7 Vincent Lee’s service at YWCA has lasted for three years since before the pandemic, and he moved on to an advanced stage of training the retired students how to work like a professional artist based on the hand-drawn design skills they learnt. The Western Calligraphy Course covered a wide range of font experimentations such as Cursive Scripts, Gothic Fonts, Lombardy Capitals, Schwabacher Capitals and Secretary Capitals. Practical purposes were included as the YWCA students were guided how to write prayers, lyrics and greetings with a proper graphic-design module covering floral decorative-pattern designs and eye-catching iconographies. Students were required to use Daphne or Scroll-and-Brush for reviving the beauty of these classical texts.
  8. 8. 8 Left: Vincent Lee’s in-class demonstration Right: Students’ work in Gothic fonts A collective of mini greeting-card designs in cursive scripts by all students The Mandela Drawing Course was actually a version of extension from the Western Calligraphy Course, as the brushstrokes students learnt from the use of Daphne and Scroll-and-Brush shared similarities with the composition of the radioactive patterns of a Mandela graphic. The Mandela Drawing Course covered four emphasis: Brushable Mandela, Daphne Mandela, Scroll-and-Brush Mandela and Self-Selected Mandela.
  9. 9. 9 Student’s work – Brushable Mandela Student’s works – Daphne Mandela & Scroll-and-Brush Mandela
  10. 10. 10 Students’ works – Self-Selected Mandelas The Floral Drawing Workshop was to correspond with the trend of New Year floral extravaganza in which it brought celebrative mood to the retired students despite of the Omicron attack in early 2022. Vincent got used to cite out which part(s) a particular student had done the best job and which part(s) she needed to search for improvements. It was just like Miss. Winnie Choy’s heartfelt education during his HKCEE Art studies to strengthen students’ confidence in breakthroughs and refine their techniques. Even though the drawing tools returned to the basic level of using coloured-pencils, Vincent Lee could guide the YWCA students to create fantastic works based on primitive DIY tools. It was a matter of heartfelt education instead of coping with the extremely-commercial needs of the design industry. So, Vincent Lee defined his mission as not being limited to the extent of DSE VA education but to prosper this hand-drawn design fantasies within the community-art level. Maybe it is not the cup of tea for those conceptual artists obtaining exhibition opportunities in Venice Biennial. But, Vincent Lee successfully built up a humanistic sentiment from the friendship-based apprenticeship with the retired students whom just want fruitfulness in community-based social lives instead of entrepreneurial achievements.

  12. 12. 12 Some pretty greeting-card designs by students in which they could be sent to the kids from basic-class families as souvenirs after coloured-printed photocopying:
  13. 13. 13
  14. 14. 14 Vincent Lee does not care for the conservative philosophy which is a loosing of the dignity as an ultimate master after teaching the devoted apprentices some important skills. He highly encouraged his retired students at YWCA to experience the fun of being a professional artist by showcasing their fruits to the public for widespread
  15. 15. 15 appreciation. Vincent Lee registered for an exhibition chance from the Community Art Gallery of Kennedy Town MTR Station to curate a YWCA Joint Student Western Calligraphy and Mandela Drawing Artwork Exhibition in Spring 2021. It did not require prominent guests-of-honours to officiate the opening ceremony during the Coronvirus attack, as a very simple display could thus earn an extremely high browsing rate from the numerous MTR passengers. It was a cost-effective solution to the difficult situation of art-tutorship operations under the pandemic circumstances with lots of gathering and event-management restrictions. Moreover, YWCA is a non-profit organization, and it was easy for this institution to grasp such exhibition chance without burden as a commercial art gallery.
  16. 16. 16 Vincent Lee’s YWCA students successfully communicated with the passengers for how Western Calligraphy and Mandela Drawing could be like in terms of DIY craftsmanship. Once Vincent Lee liked to integrate these design-art elements with thematic iconographies, he could actually lead students to explore how “Applied Art” could undergo a fusion with the interesting elements of our daily lives.
  17. 17. 17 Vincent Lee has ever served as a Substitute Visual Arts Teacher at St. Joseph’s College, teaching a total of 15 VA classes from Form 1 to Form 3 levels during CY Leung’s administration era. In November 2022, Vincent Lee took up a sudden opportunity of serving as a Substitute Visual Arts Teacher again at Evangel College. This time, he was assigned to teach three DSE VA classes from Form 4 to Form 6 levels, as well as serving as an Assistant Class Teacher of P5C in Primary Section. For the three DSE VA classes in senior secondary level, Vincent Lee guided students how to tackle with CD-cover designs, Visual Presentation of a Theme with “earthquake” as examination topic and their SBA portfolios. For the VA class of P5C, Vincent Lee was required to teach “Font Design – Design with Objects”. To better illustrate how fonts could be transformed as cartoonist iconographies, Vincent Lee had prepared for two hand-drawn design samples as a fulfillment of professional elaborations for students’ easier observation during their in-class practices. “Font Design – Design with Objects” curricular materials for P5C at Evangel College
  18. 18. 18 HISTORY STUDY FORUM Driven by the encouragement of Ms. Josephine YEUNG, Vincent Lee tried to organize weekly reading gatherings at his Kwai Hing studio since May 2020. The catering-restriction act imposed restrictions to those literary persons whom liked to discuss imaginative affairs at cafes, and “Atelier de Belas-Artes do Vincent Lee” as a commercial art gallery provided an alternative for these suffered clients to resolve their boredom. The weekly gatherings were based on a collective academic analysis on History textbook topics, with an addition of talking about certain social-science issues as well. Vincent Lee’s Kwai Hing studio has been transformed as a hub like “Hong Kong Reader Bookstore” in Mongkok in which it stressed a leftard mode of philosophical thinking sheltering the invisible intellectuals within the civic strata to pursue excellences in researches despite of having graduated from universities but with no regular Ph-D or educational positions.
  19. 19. 19
  20. 20. 20 Of course, for those who expect an atmosphere of meritocracy for knowing more
  21. 21. 21 commercial and bureaucratic elites from the privileged class, this kind of weekly reading gatherings inside a factory unit was never their cup of tea as they felt disheartened with travelling to Kwai Hing for getting in touch with the basic-class community and tasting the local snacks of Kwong Fai Wai. Indeed, regular visitor Ian Po is a big fan of Russian histories and Portuguese language, whereas he contributed the delivery ordering of Islamic curry foods after our academic discussions. Vincent Lee did publish an article sharing onto the History Department Newsletter of HKBU for introducing the ideal of his “History Study Forum” as well. MONTHLY STUDIO PARTIES The “Atelier de Belas-Artes do Vincent Lee” has been relocated from On Fat Industrial Building to Kwai Shing Industrial Building since March 2021. The History Study Forum underwent a transformation with regards to the popular demand. Vincent Lee changed to organize “monthly studio parties” specializing in board games, poker games, discussion on MIRROR or ERROR fans-club issues and a collection of Sumling souvenirs. The client foundation has also undergone a dramatic change, from academic intellectuals to playful big boys. The monthly studio parties even provided certain months to organize birthday parties for particular acquaintances of the similar horoscopes as well. It becomes a social hub for truthful friendships, as well as a party-room platform for interested bodies to expand personnel networks.
  22. 22. 22
  23. 23. 23 ACADEMIC FRUITS AND EXHIBITIONS AT CUHK FINE ARTS Vincent Lee experienced a rejuvenation of his glorious status at Rosaryhill School within his MAFA studies at CUHK Fine Arts. He was a recognizable “academic hegemony” acknowledged by seven FAA professors. This has overthrown the estate-school index of whole-person education at HKBU in which it proves that a rather scholastic approach of tertiary art education with emphasis on Chinese art histories and Western art philosophies is much more suitable for Vincent Lee to emerge as a super-star.
  24. 24. 24 First, the CUHK Fine Arts stresses the ugly aesthetics as a guiding code of expressionistic painting creations in accordance with Prof. Kurt Chan’s emphasis. Second, the other three professors of FAA Creative Workshops guided Vincent to develop research-based art with enlightened concepts and stylistic visions. Third, Prof. Ho Siu-kee and Prof. Lukas Tam required Vincent to write dissertations for a better explanation on his professional art projects, whereas he obtained very excellent grades from their evaluation schemes. Fourth, Clara’s internship course has enriched Vincent with ethnographical methodologies for how to cope with the project-management demands of global enterprises and deal with community-based dialogues when carrying out a marketing effort on your contemporary art entrepreneurships. The creative topics that Vincent covered at CUHK Fine Arts included gender issues, Kowloon Walled City, Maurice Merleau-Ponty’s theory about “autofigurative sentiments” and a rediscovery on cultural identities. Vincent Lee did showcase his fruits of research-based art at JCCAC, Cheng Ming Building and CUHK Art Museum. Luke Ching inspired Vincent Lee to portray sexual episodes for making a breakthrough on the conservative trend of art-collection businesses and exhibition-venue censorships. Indeed, both his works from Luke Ching and Prof. Lukas Tam’s courses examined his subconscious desires for becoming a Homecoming Dad. “The Helpless Feeling of a Cute Vision” from Prof. Kurt Chan’s course – exhibited at JCCAC
  25. 25. 25 “Pussy-cum-Homecoming Dad Series” from Luke Ching’s course – exhibited at the 3rd Floor public area of Cheng Ming Building with critique session
  26. 26. 26 Graffiti art contributions for a District Councilor of Prince Edward District in Clara’s internship course “Recognition on Cultural Identities” – an exhibit required by Prof. Luka Tam for the MAFA Year 1 Exhibition at Hui Gallery of Cheng Ming Building
  27. 27. 27 A research on Maurice Merleau Ponty’s theory about “autofigurative sentiments from Prof. Ho Siu-kee’s course – exhibited at the 3rd Floor public area of Cheng Ming Building
  28. 28. 28 “Kowloon Walled City Series” – Graduation Project from Prof. Lukas Tam’s course exhibited at CUHK Art Museum
  29. 29. 29 Vincent Lee took photos with four of the seven FAA professors during the MAFA Graduation Show – Dr. Nick CHU, Prof. Frank VIGNERON, Prof. HO Siu-kee and Prof. Lukas TAM Moreover, Vincent Lee successfully curated a solo-display on his paintings from Kwai Hing studio at CUHK Chien Mu Library in early 2021. Despite of the Zoom broadcast and the swimming-pool closure, Vincent could transcend the limitations by showcasing his works in a very publicized campus platform that the official CUHK Library website looped the corresponding event news repetitively for making Justin Chan Lok and millions of CUHK persons notice about my artistic contributions in an online module. Also, the Chien Mu Library is of a very mature database system to archive Vincent Lee’s art exhibits in a very gallery-oriented vision. So, it has earned a very good propagandistic effect. The title of this solo-display at Chien Mu Library was “Floating Beyond Secularity and Fantasies”, with pink as the curatorial colour tone:

  32. 32. 32 REPORT BY PRESS MEDIA The organizing committee of the CUHK MAFA Graduation Show invited Amber Au from Commercial Radio to report the art exhibits in an academic manner. Amber Au’s report covered Vincent Lee’s “Dentist Street” painting from his “Kowloon Walled City Series” as well, as Amber Au shared the image of this painting onto the IG story of her radio programme and Alfred Hui corresponded with her introduction by sharing Vincent Lee’s painting onto his personal IG story as well. With the duplicated promotional effects by Amber Au and Alfred Hui, lots of radio audiences knew about Vincent Lee’s creative ideas of representing the diminished Walled City episodes based on lifeguards as subject matters. Later on, the Ta Kung Pao interviewed Vincent Lee about his experience of participating in the New World Harbour Race and HK01 interviewed him about the views towards the official arrangements of CUHK Congregation Day. It seems that Vincent has been suffered from dryness of having no news reports about his efforts at HKBU, and now he re-enters a splendid era similar to RTHK’s interview on his art contributions during his AL Art studies at Rosaryhill School.
  33. 33. 33 Commerical Radio was the cored contributor in making Vincent Lee’s Walled City painting about Alfred Hui become popular
  34. 34. 34 Ta Kung Pao and HK01 corresponded with the prosperity of Vincent Lee’s CUHK studies to interview him in different occasions ** Reports by other online press-media units:
  35. 35. 35 2022 p-articles “Literary Arts Follow Me” – “The MAFA Graduation Exhibition of CUHK called ‘Moment by Moment’: A display of coexistence between life and art” (video with episodes of my painting exhibits) 2022 EXCOHK – “Walking into the eyes of artists: ‘Moment by Moment’ MAFA Graduation Exhibition of CUHK” (photos with episodes of my painting exhibits)
  36. 36. 36 SELF-JOURNALISM Knowing about RTHK’s neglecting act on me can hardly be resolved, there could be an alternative for producing an art-interview that coped with the international standard of Bloomberg. A Rosarian mentee who is a “Student Artist of the Year” specializes in creative media, and his company called “Windebank Productions” is keen at microfilm creations. Vincent Lee invited “Windebank Productions” to conduct a thorough interview on his art practices at “Atelier de Belas-Artes do Vincent Lee”, with an in-depth analysis on the contexts of his paintings inside his studio. Also, outdoor interviews were conducted at Rosaryhill School and CUHK New Asia College. For the session of Rosaryhill School, thoughtful conversations with Father Jose Salas and Amy Chan were recorded. Amy Chan is a Porcelain Painting Artist in Hong Kong who is also a distinguished old student at Rosaryhill School. The entire interview programme is currently available for appreciation on YouTube platform, and it gives global netizens an articulate picture for how Vincent Lee emerges as a remarkable contemporary painter since his college era.
  37. 37. 37
  38. 38. 38 The YouTube programme by “Windebank Productions” covered three areas, namely Vincent’s Kwai Hing studio, Vincent’s contributions at Rosaryhilll School and Vincent’s MAFA studies at CUHK Fine Arts
  39. 39. 39 TALKS AT HONG KONG SOCIETY OF HUMANITIES Usually, Hong Kong Society of Humanities is an academic platform in which Vincent Lee has devoted much effort to think about the innovative discussion topics but the short-sighted youngsters still condemn this unit as old-schooled without any willingness to give commitments for more. But, since late 2022, the HKSH announces that each speaker can earn HK$300 income for each academic talk due to the HK$90,000 surpluses in financial reserves. Then, Vincent’s long-term investment on this free-aired broadcast will no longer be demonized as non-interest-driven. Indeed, once Vincent Lee is willing to selflessly remain inside HKSH and purely focus on academics, there won’t be a closed gate to obstruct him for enjoying a bright career prospect at all. Vincent Lee tries his best to think about various topics for various talks, from traditional Chinese art histories to contemporary Western aesthetic philosophies and Hong Kong art issues. He copes with what the art academia badly needs for public audiences to know about, and then he develops these as his topics. Also, he does not mind instilling the elements of popular cultures to attract netizens’ attentions. All the gimmicks that he creates in his talks are to grasp the donations from netizens for Patreon and boost up the browsing rate including the netizens from Macau through giving Sino-Portuguese titles, so as to help HKSH gain prosperity despite of a reversed marketing circumstance.
  40. 40. 40 A joint seminar by Dr. LEUNG Kwong-yiu, Dr. LAU Kwai-piu, Mr. Tommy WONG and Vincent LEE for discussing the Sino-Western aesthetic differences at HKSH in late 2021 ** HKSH Talks by Vincent LEE between 2020 and 2022: 2020 "The Paintings of Modern Russia: Experienced the strikes of Czardom, Orthodox Church and Leninist School of Painting Thought" (Academic Talk)
  41. 41. 41 2020 "A brief discussion on the leisure of the 'National Painting Nature-Sketching Methodology' from the ancient to the modern era" (Academic Talk) 2020 "In Commemoration of our prominent Sinologist: A study on 'Jao Lotuses' painting collections" (Academic Talk) 2021 "An analysis on the 'Dependence Beauty' values of drawings and paintings of the Yellow Creative Circuit" (Academic Talk) 2021 "The Modern Japanese Art: From the fulfillment of Bushido spirit to the influence of animation culture" (Academic Talk) 2021 "A brief discussion on the aesthetic interpretations from Mr. Xu Fouguan's 'Comment on Art Issues' publication" (Academic Talk) 2021 "Leisurely Chat about Virtues - Mr. Tommy Wong, Mr. Vincent Lee & Dr. Leung Kwong-yiu: A comparison of painting art between China and the West" (Online Meeting Pure Talk Programme) 2021 "How the style of Pop Art from the United States affects the marketing trend of contemporary Oriental painting collection" (Academic Talk) 2022 "Minimalism in the self-expressiveness of the literati painting tradition from the landscape, floral and bird paintings of the Song, Yuan, Ming and Qing Dynasties" (Academic Talk) 2022 "A study on the culture of imitation from the gongbi paintings in the Ming Dynasty" (Academic Talk) 2022 "A research on the baby-playing paintings by Su Hanchen from the Northern Song Dynasty" (Academic Talk) 2022 "A brief discussion on the Photorealism from the acrylic paintings created by Ms. Cho Yeou-jui" (Academic Talk) 2022 "The Macau-based painting life about Catholic faith by Wu Li, a representative of Early-Qing Six Masters" (Academic Talk) 2022 "A critical analysis on a museological article called 'On The New' written by Boris Groys" (Academic Talk) 2022 "A brief discussion on the seal-engraving theories and the seal portfolios by Chen Hongshou from the Qing Dynasty" (Academic Talk) 2022 "How the New Cultural Movement facilitated the development of printmaking art in Modern China" (Academic Talk) Vincent Lee has ever contributed an alumni sharing to the History Department Newsletter of HKBU for better explaining how he organizes academic talks at Hong Kong Society of Humanities, which is driven by the fundamental form of New Asia
  42. 42. 42 Spirits from Dr. Fong Sai-ho’s Alma Mater, New Asia Research Institute in Lung Po Road. The Society stresses an equilibrium between Western democracy and Chinese culture during this chaotic era of academic pursuit:
  43. 43. 43 COLLECTIONS The “Atelier de Belas-Artes do Vincent Lee” pursues a convenient-store strategy to reserve a great diversity but précised mode of painting storages with different themes, including portraits, still lives, landscapes, animals and imaginative episodes,
  44. 44. 44 for clients to choose from. Commissioned art projects are welcomed in a subscription manner of service ordering. Vincent Lee’s Kwai Hing studio welcomes clients to contribute image references for such orders before some festive occasions, such as souvenirs for Valentine’s Day and colleagues’ retirement banquets. All kinds of themes can be handled. Vincent Lee has ever sold 16 pieces of paintings since his Bachelor studies at HKBU in 2008. Then, his paintings have ever appeared on the auction scenes of Penang Trader’s Hotel in Malaysia and Sai Kung Hong Kong Academy. He has ever held solo exhibitions for several times, and has engaged in a contemporary art fair called “Sai Kung Art And About” for three times. It is often Vincent Lee’s aspiration to have his works being nominated by gallery curators from Art Basel, Art Central, Asia Contemporary Art Show, Fine Art Asia and Affordable Art Fair in which he can target on professional art collectors to boost up the selling prices and connoisseurship values of his art creations. 2020 "Black Clothes within the Grayish Starry Night", Acrylic on Canvas, 2020. 45. 45. 45 AS A P1X3L SUPPORTIVE HUB The music-band culture of ViuTV Channel / MakerVille has been making lots of Hong Kong citizens go crazy during these three years of pandemic. Patrick Ian Tang, a supportive client of “Atelier de Belas-Artes do Vincent Lee”, obtained four posters from P1X3L’s “This Is How We Roll” fans-club promotional lorry and dedicated them to Vincent Lee during the monthly studio party. He encouraged Vincent Lee to stick these four posters of Phoebus, George and Marco onto the door surface of his Kwai Hing studio.
  46. 46. 46 Vincent Lee has ever created an acrylic portrait of Phoebus in 2020. Indeed, Phoebus is renowned with his casting for “Unavoidable Fate” evening movie and his solo pop-song called “Eventually”. Phoebus is so eager to have more fans especially for Vincent Lee’s unconditional aid in advertising his achievements onto the social media, so as to prevent from the emergence of Justin Chan Lok as a potential competitor. So, driven by such populist demand about defining Vincent Lee as an unbreakable Puzzle, the “Atelier de Belas-Artes do Vincent Lee” symbolically transforms to be the only P1X3L fans-club centre in Hong Kong for Puzzles to have social gatherings, such as the exchanges of P1X3L activity news.
  47. 47. 47 OVERSEAS ACADEMIC EXCHANGE Despite of the Zoom broadcasts from various universities under the pandemic, Vincent Lee could transcend the regional boundaries by pursuing international academic exchanges with an American scholar. The HKBU History Department initiated a “Prof. Chang Chuen Memorial Public Lecture Series 2021 – 2022” to invite Prof. Peter Sturmann, a Chinese Art History professor from the History of Art & Architecture Department of UC Santa Barbara for holding a Zoom seminar on Su Shi’s literati paintings. Vincent Lee is renowned as obtaining Grade A- in his 9000s-word dissertation about Xu Beihong during his MSSc. China Studies at HKBU and he was tackling with the Chinese Art History studies under Dr. Lee Chi Kwong’s education
  48. 48. 48 at CUHK Fine Arts. So, it was authoritative enough for Vincent Lee to communicate with Prof. Peter Sturmann by representing both BU History Department and CUHK Fine Arts as duplicated identities. Vincent Lee has never visited the United States before, but this Zoom seminar has enabled him to just stay at home and assume himself as reaching the University of California for discussing Su Shi with Prof. Peter Sturmann inside a solemn university seminar. Vincent did not need to pay any flight-ticket and hotel fees but could accumulate a piece of important resume about overseas academic exchange. Also, Vincent Lee has made a profound historical record by writing a piece of alumni sharing about this academic-exchange experience with Prof. Peter Sturmann for the publishing purpose of History Department Newsletter at HKBU; whereas the Newsletter is in a digital version that can be distributed to the widespread netizens through mass-mailing system for achieving this win-win international exchange effect among HKBU, “Atelier de Belas-Artes do Vincent Lee” and Prof. Peter Sturmann. Vincent Lee’s capability in bridging the gap with the American academia as well as discussing Chinese art histories is of no doubtful elements. Also, it was a rare case that Vincent Lee could really do something that concretely contributed to the developmental demands of HKBU Presidential Strata apart from his engagement in Sumling Effect, as AVA used to regard him as a nobody due to his “non-academic-hegemony” origin. The seminar was called “Messaging with images among Song Literati - Learning from Su Shi's old tree, rock and bamboo”. Vincent Lee uses to conduct Chinese art talks for Hong Kong Society of Humanities, and he is experienced in handling with the Q&A session of Prof. Peter Sturmann’s Su Shi seminar.
  49. 49. 49 FORECASTS Despite of the dimmed factors from the establishment of WKCD Palace Museum, the “Atelier de Belas-Artes do Vincent Lee” is going ahead with an articulate direction namely commercialism and an inter-disciplinary mode of contemporary-art curatorship. People use to interrogate Vincent Lee for whether he can make success simply with this MAFA graduate qualification without a Ph-D in Chinese Art, but Vincent Lee is going to encounter three exhibition opportunities in the upcoming future. Vincent Lee can break the monopolization of New Asia Academic Junks by obtaining distinguished results from his MAFA studies at CUHK Fine Arts, regardless of less creative resources and less concreted studio lessons under the pandemic. He can bargain for the chances from the contemporary gallery curators by enjoying a professional mode of biography-based packaging strategy on his artistic image and his portfolio series, unlike the ideological boundary defined by the Chinese-medium professors that he has to be in a low-profile personality when dealing with his own art creations but to diligently work on the written Sinological researches. He can deserve for more, and his past exhibition achievements prove that he can accomplish
  50. 50. 50 the basic expectations of the art industry for how a professional studio artist should be like. Those who deny Vincent Lee as a nobody are just covering their ears to pretend hearing nothing from the noisy ring.
  51. 51. 51 The Christian Art Biennial Exhibition curated by Mr. Mann Chow is of serious academic foundation, with CUHK Chung Chi College Theological Institute as a co-organizer. Also, Dr. Woo Ying Ching, Former Chinese Language Lecturer of Language Centre at HKBU, will be a participating artist as similar as Vincent Lee showcasing her watercolour paintings at Heep Woh Primary School, the exhibition venue. Within the academic panel, comic artist from Malaysia and art scholar from Taiwan are included which make this exhibition reach an Asia-Pacific level of international aesthetic exchanges. Moreover, Vincent Lee will have a solo-display at CUHK Chien Mu Library and join the FAA Alumni Association Joint Exhibition next year summer. Vincent Lee won’t be bounded by the burden about a must for creating some very Sinological pieces for better selling but to omit the enlightenment of innovative creative ideas. He will keep telling stories from the narration of his visual languages as similar as Jacques Ranciere and Walter Benjamin advocated. Hong Kong is fundamentally an international financial city prospered by past British rulers like Governor Chris Patten, and it is logical for Vincent to succeed his career
