3. What is project Loon?
Project Loon is network of
balloons travelling on the
edge of space , design to
connect people in rural
and remote areas.
It is an initiative taken by
Google to provide internet
access all over the world.
A pilot experiment
happened in New Zealand
in 2013 and about 30
balloons were launched.
4. Project loon balloons float in
the stratosphere , twice as high
as air planes.
They are carried around the
earth by winds and steered to
an altitude with winds in desired
direction.
People connect to the balloon
network using a special internet
antenna attached to a their
buildings.
Each balloon can provide
connectivity to ground about 40
km with speeds compare to 3G
and equipped with GPRS.
8. Envelope:
*The project loon’s balloon
envelopes are made from sheets
of the polyethylene plastic and
filled with Helium.
*The inflatable part of the balloon
is designed to handle the
temperatures as low as -
58degrees Fahrenheit ,exposed to
UV rays and extremely low air
pressure.
*Height:40feet
*Width:50feet
*cruising altitude:60000-72000feet
9. A small box containing the balloon’s electronic
equipment.
This box contains circuit boards that control the
system.
Radio antennas to communicate with other
balloons and with internet antennas on the ground .
And batteries to store solar power so the balloons
can operate during the night.
10. How Loon Moves
Project Loons travel around
20kms above the earth surface
in stratosphere.
Winds in stratosphere are
steady and slow-moving at
between 5 and 20 mph.
The set-up uses software
algorithms to determine where
its balloons needs to go, then
moves each one into a layer of
wind blowing in the right
direction .
11. HOW LOON CONNECTS
Each balloon has an antenna
that provides connectivity to
the ground.
These antennas are
equipped with specialised radio
frequency that connects each
loon to other loons.
Loons uses ISM bands
(industrial, scientific and
medical radio bands) of
spectrum 2.4GHz-5.8GHz to
use radio frequency.
12. Advantages & Disadvantages
Advantages:
• Easy to use.
• Internet Speed is good.
• Increasing internet usage.
• Cost is low compared to satellites.
Disadvantages:
• Cost.
• Maintenance is required periodically.
• Balloon can work for few weeks only (100 days).
• If any accidents occur it can be easily broken and damaged.
13. In this century , Google’s new invention
Google project loon provide a very valuable
help to poor people by accessing the internet
facility.
With this , almost all the people , may get
the ability to know the world of internet and
utilize these facility to overcome the
barriers.
