GELS: Gels are the transparent, semisolid preparations that contain
small inorganic or large organic molecules interpenetrated by a
liquid.
Advantages:
Non-greasy
Easy to formulate
Easily spreadable and washable
Prevents unwanted side effects produced by GIT.
Disadvantages:
Sustained and slower effect
Water content in gel may start microbial growth
AIM AND OBJECTIVES
The main aim of present study is to prepare and evaluate
Diclofenac gel as per I.P. monographical standards.
Objectives:
To evaluate physiochemical parameters of Diclofenac sodium as
per I.P. monograph.
To analyze Diclofenac sodium by suitable UV
spectrophotometric method.
To prepare Diclofenac sodium gel by using dispersion method.
Ingredients Quantity Required
Diclofenac Sodium 0.5g
Methanol 2ml
Glycerol 1.5g
Sodium Carboxy Methyl Cellulose 2.5g
Methylparaben 0.05g
Propylparaben 0.05g
Distilled Water Q.S
Total Weight 50g
PREPARATION OF DICLOFENAC SODIUM GEL:
• Diclofenac sodium gel was prepared by dispersion method.
• In this method, two solutions were prepared. The first solution was
made by mixing 0.5g of Diclofenac sodium with 1 to 2ml of methanol
and 1.5g of glycerol and stirred well until the drug is dissolved.
• In second solution, 2.5g of sodium carboxy methyl cellulose, 0.05g of
methylparaben, 0.05g of propylparaben and distilled water were mixed
slowly on continuous stirring by magnetic stirrer at 1200rpm for
30min.

SUMMARY AND
CONCLUSION
Conventional gels can be
applied topically which have
high patient compliance.
Topical preparations prevent
the metabolism of drug in liver
and also avoids gastrointestinal
disorders and risks pertaining
to NSAIDs. So, in the current
study, Diclofenac sodium is
employed in the preparation of
gel which bypasses these
effects.
