Badminton
3. BADMINTON is a racket sport played by either two opposing players(singles) or
two opposing pairs(doubles). The badminton court is rectangular and is
divided by a net. Players score points by hitting a shuttlecock with their
racket so that it passes over the net and lands in the other side of the court.
Competitive badminton is best played indoors because shuttlecock flight is
affected
by wind. But badminton, as a casual recreational activity, can also be played
outdoors.
Badminton has been an Olympic sport since 1992(Barcelona).

Badminton
4. History of
Badminton
Games like badminton have existed
throughout history, from ancient Greece to
medieval Japan and colonial India, where a
form of the game called “Poona” was played.
In the 1860’s, British Army officers posted
to India became interested in “Poona” and
took the game home to England, where the
rules of badminton were set out.
This new sport was launched in 1873 at
the Badminton House, where the Duke of
Beaufort introduced the game to his
guest. The sport was then known as “The
game of badminton” for the number of
years, until the name was shortened to
BADMINTON.
5. Equipment
for
Badminton
Rackets-Badminton rackets are light, with
top quality rackets weighting between 79
and 91 grams including the strings. The grip
of the racket is very important. The choice of
grip allows a player to increase the thickness
of his racket handle and choose a
comfortable surface to hold.
Shuttlecock- A shuttlecock (shuttle , birdie)
is a high-drag projectile, with an open
conical shape: the cone is formed from
sixteen overlapping feathers embedded
into a rounded cork base. The cork is
covered with thin leather or synthetic
material. Synthetic shuttles (nylon) are
often used by recreational players to
reduce their costs as feathered shuttles
break easily

Badminton shoes- A good pair of
Badminton Shoes must provide good grip,
cushioning and some flexibility at the
forefoot. A pair of proper badminton
shoes will have la little lateral support and
a very thin sole, lower a person's center of
gravity, and therefore result in fewer
injuries.
7. Score
Rules
• Each game is played to 21 points . A match is the best of three
games.
• At the start of the rally, the server and receiver stand in diagonally
opposite service courts.
• When the serving side loses a rally, the serve immediately passes to
their opponent.
• In singles, the server stands in their right service court when their
score is even, and in her/his left service court when her/his score
is odd.
• In doubles, if the serving side wins a rally, the same player
continues to serve, but he/she changes service courts so that
she/he serves to a different opponent each time. If the opponents
win the rally and their new score is even, the player in the right
service court serves.
• If the score reaches 20-all, then the game continues until one side
gains a two-point lead (such as 24-22), up to a maximum of 30
points (30-29 is a winning score).
8. Badminton is played on a court marked for both singles and doubles
matches. The court is rectangular and divided into halves by a net.
The doubles court is wider than the singles court, but both are the
same length. The exception, which often causes confusion to newer
players, is that the doubles court has a shorter serve- length
dimension. The doubles court is 6,10 meters wide and 13,40 m.
long.

Strokes
Forehand and backhand Badminton offers a wide
variety of basic strokes. All strokes can be played either
forehand or backhand. A player's forehand side is the
same side as his playing hand: for a right-handed
player, the forehand side is his right side, and the
backhand side is his left side.

11. General
Faults
A general fault occurs if:
• The bird falls outside the court (if it falls on a boundary line
it is good).
• A player is struck by the bird.
• A player hits the bird twice in succession or a player and
partner hit the bird on successive shots.
• The bird is struck before it crosses the net (however, a
racket may follow through over the net).
• A player touches the net while the bird is in play.
• A player catches the bird instead of letting it drop.
• The bird is carried on the racket.
