3. Define the process of coastal erosion
Describe the causes of coastal erosion
Analyze the effects of coastal erosion
List ways of preventing and reducing coastal
erosion
4. In this topic, the relentless pounding of waves which alters
the shape of the coast and the deleterious effects of coastal
erosion will be discussed;
Philippines has one of the worlds longest shorelines.
Coasts are composed of many kinds of materials, including
sand,rocky sediments,mud and biological substances.
A coastline or seashore is the area where land meets the sea
or ocean.
Shoreline or shore is the fringe of land at the edge of a larger
body of water, such as an ocean, sea, or lake.
Waves are the forward movement of the ocean's water due to
the oscillation of water particles by the frictional drag of wind
over the water's surface.
Erosion is the process by which materials are removed from
the surface and transported to another location.
5. - Is a natural process which shapes shortlines by
the wearing away of coastal land or beaches
,mainly by the impact of waves along the
shoreline.
Rock fragments can be dislodged by high energy
waves invading the spaces in a fractured or
cracked narrow strip of land projecting out into
the sea (headland).
Sand particles and rock fragments carried by the
waves crashing into headlands accelerate the
process.
6. 1.Natural processes,and
Ex:
*High rainfall and floods *Sea level changes
*Strong waves and high wind
2.Anthropogenic activities
Ex:
*Beach Sand Mining *River Sand Mining
*Constructing buildings and *Inland Coral Mining infrastructure
installations,
etc. too close to coastline
The natural process of coastal erosion not only involves waves.
The sediment redistribution process that moves water, sand, and
bigger rock fragments also involves currents, tides, wind-driven
water, ice, rainwater and groundwater.
7. Factors such as the length of fetch;wind direction and
speed, wavelength, height and near shore water depth;
tidal influence; and overall strength and duration of went
can significantly influence the intensity of coastal erosion.
The strength of coastal erosion is “amplified”.
With climate change, the warmer temperature cause
extreme
weather conditions.
Humans can also be considered as agents in speeding
up process and intensifying the effects of coastal erosion.
8. Ways by which humans accelerate coastal
erosion process;
Removal of vegetation cover exposing sediment to wind
and water action.
Concentration of drainage water flow into the sea causing
erosion of the part of the coast.
Construction of structures including coastal erosion control
structures that interfere with the natural flow of coastal
materials, causing erosion in adjacent areas of the shore.
Building activities that damage natural protective features.
Activities which destroy natural protective features such as
dunes and vegetation cover
Shipping and boating activities producing extra wave
action.
9. -When coupled with deposition, coastal erosion creates and
continuously modifies the different landforms of the transitions
sedimentary environment.
Coastal erosion only becomes a concern when it poses as
threat to the safety of humans and infrastructure.
Coastal erosion is accentrated during storms that carry waves
with a lot of energy.
Exposure to hazards related to coastal erosion is
mainly due to inhabitation and extensive development of coasts
into rural centers.
10.
11. Coastal erosion could modify the landscape & possibly
cause damage gradually over a season or after many
years. But it could also happen very rapidly, like overnight,
when the storm hits the area. The beach width of coasts
composed of loose, unconsodilated material can be
reduced tremendously if the rate deposition of sediment
sources, like rivers, cannot catch up with the rate of
erosion in the area. The foundation of houses built on such
areas can be compromised and may even result in total
wreck.
Coastal erosion impacts humanity and enviroment in
various ways.
12.
13. “Can you tell how coastal erosion causes
property loss, waning of tourism and consequently
of the local (perhaps of the national) economy
,destruction of historical landmarks ,damage to
industrial sites (consequently to the economy and
environment as well) and environmental
degration?
14. “Coastal erosion can be quite challenging to manage.”
-people living near the ocean
Land-use management and planning should always be
an option as it is usually even more effective than hard
engineering shore protection measures in preventing
hazards related to coastal erosion. But there are some
instances ,however,in which shore protection structures
are indispensable.
15.
16.
17. Preservation of and restriction of activities and
development in natural protective features(eg. dunes and
beaches)
Regulating coastal erosion protection structures to
ensure that natural protective features are not damaged.
Prohibiting construction in areas of active coastal erosion
and in areas within reach of coastal storms.
Restricting development of public utilities in areas prone
to coastal erosion to discourage new development in
these areas.
Building coastal erosion protection structures only when
and where necessary (to prevent loss of lives and
property).
