IMG SOURCE :indiatoday.in
PERSONAL LIFE
● He belongs from a village of Tirunelveli District of Tamilnadu.
● He had 4 siblings ; 3 sisters and a brother ; among them he used to love and admire his
brother.
● He had little affection towards Mother , and loved his father.
● His father was a theif and he taught Raman Raghav how to steal and commit murders; this
was the reason for which he used to love his father.
● His parents died early .
● He had paternal influnence on him .
● At the young age he started petty pilferings .
● Hatred of a women was a dominant character of Raman Raghav.
● CAUSE OF HATRED : (1) A marriage was arranged for him with Guruamma , before the
marriage took place he was arrested for theft and sent to jail, meanwhile Guruamma became
pregnant by another man and died giving birth to a stillborn baby ...
(3)After that with one of his friend he moved to Bombay ,there he used to work
along with him in a textile mill,Raman used to work in day and his friend at night ;
one-night his friend wife invited him to share her bed, he refused. The next
morning ,wife complained to husband that Raman tried to seduce her. Raman was
thrown out of the chawl .
Raman was betrayed, abandoned and abused,he became misogynist ,lone wolf and
vagabond and he used to visit the prostitutes very oftenly .He went in and out of
jails for convictions of vagrancy ,robbery, violence and petty pilferings,he
apparently killed two men, but got away of it ,he was sent to mental institutions
twice but got discharged as normal.Crime and sex became his daily ration.
(2)After this some of the village elders found him another
women,Raman found that the women proposed for him had
been discarded by other man and had children by him.
MURDER DETAILS
● In 1966 , nearly 24 murders took place along the ,GIP Line of municipality ;but there was
no evidence to trace the suspect.
● In the year of 1966 ,Raman was arrested on a charge of murder while commiting theft; but
due to lack of evidence it was not proved .
● Raman Raghav was externed out of Bombay for 2 years ,so he went Pune there he used to
do petty pilferings in the area of Wadgaon , Dehu ,Talegaon , In Talegaon, he was arrested
in a false robbery case(actually there he made attempt for a murder of tea shop owner), and
was sentenced for 18 months of jail, then he returned to borivilli in the year 1968 .
● In 1968 , many murders were taking place in the city of bombay in the area of Malad ,
Oshiwara ,Goregaon ,Kandivali ,Borivli , Dahisar. Most of the victims were resident of
hutments and the Modus Operandi was the same which was reported earlier in 1995-96.
● During the period when Raman Raghav was in custody there were no reports of any such
murders from anywhere in the city .So suspicious turned towards Raman Raghav.
● In the year 1965 , 19 people were attacked while asleep and all of them
had received had head injuries ; 9 of them were died to their injuries
rest of them were not able to recollect anything useful to establish
suspects identity.
INVESTIGATION DETAILS
● They applied the theory of Environmental Criminology
which talks about geometry of crime for the ongoing
murders in the city.
● While going through many old files ,they retrieved
dossier of Raghav’s photograph and fingerprints. They
found out that he had many aliases and he’s convicted of
many property crimes. They made a list of persons who
knows the suspect even causally in the past ;The look out
notice was released by crime branch , and officers were
out in the city for search of Raman Raghav’s
acquaintances.
● After 5 days of search ,one of the acquaintance gave the information that she knows
Raman as ANNA she recollected that she had seen him on the same morning and He
wore khaki shorts , blue shirt , brown canvas shoes and carried umbrella in his hand .
iImage source :bbcnews.in
● Alex , brought the similar looking person to the station and a quick comparison of
fingerprints was done with of Raman’s and it was confirmed that he was Raman Raghav .
● In the custody , Raman Raghav did not speak during the interrogation for two days, On the
third day one of the officials asked him whether he needs anything , he instantly said
“Murgi” (chicken) , then the officals offered him chicken dish , he had the chicken dish and
again he asked for coconut oil ,comb, mirror and a prostitute , again he said , ‘ I think law
doesn’t permit this’ . Meanwhile officer provided him coconut oil ,comb ,mirror ; he applied
the coconut oil ,combed his hairs and looked at his own face in the mirror for a longtime.
Forensics Report:
Raman’s fingerprint were matched with the prints and the
chance print that were found on crime scene
● Though it was much difficult to trace Raghav in the
city.Alex Fiallo, sub-inspector of police noticed a
person with the similar appearance as mentioned by
acquintance.

● After that he gave the informations about the murders he committed and took the police to
the place where he had hidden the weapons .
● He confessed about many of the murders committed by him .
TRAIL AND PROCEEDINGS
● In 1968 Raman Raghav confessed his crime infront of the magistrate and stated that his
inner soul made him to make the confession .
● He was kept under observation by Dr. Frankline , and based on his observation , he stated
that ‘ Raman was not suffering from any psychosis , he’s memory is sound and he has
average intelligence and he was able to stand his trail’
● On August 13 ,1969 he was sentenced to death by Session Courts .
● Again the defence counsel contended that accused was a person of unsound mind , the
serious part of the argument was that , being committed several murders he went about in
broad in daylight , wearing the same bloodstained clothes, he did not resist arrest nor had
fear or guilt of his actions and he had auditory hallucinations which impelled him to do so .
● Dr .Partkar (psychiatrist )again examined Raman Raghav for 80 minutes he observed that
‘Raman Raghav was suffering from “chronic paranoid schizophrenia” which was developed
long years back . Dr Partkar stated the same in the trial and also said that Raman believed
that killing of men and the rape of dead woman was to protect himself .
● So the court ordered the counsel of three
doctors to examine Raman Raghav and he
was sent to safe custody in Yerwada
central prison.
● Board of 3 psychiatrist examined him and
he’s treatment was under Central Institute
of Mental Health and Research .
● The doctors recorded that its highly
improbable to cure him of his mental
disease.
● After spending 19 years in jail , On August 4 1987 ,The award of death sentence given by
the learned Additional sessions Judge was placed aside and in its place he was sentenced
to imprisonment for life .

Theoretical perspective
Psychological perspective
● “Psychodynamic theory” :The residue of childhood experiences, emotional attachments
which guides our future actions and behaviours. Psychoanalytic perspective also explains
that unhealthy expression of unconscious desires and defence mechanisms also lead to
criminal intent and behaviour.
● “In childhood , Raman Raghav had paternal influence so he started petty pilferings and due
to his unconscious desires he started visiting the prostitute centre.”
Sociological perspective
“Strain Theory” (1938):Merton’s Strain theory explains poverty and Low economic status of
people as the reason of increased crime rate.
“Initially he used to do burglary as he had no other source of income and then he started
killing people .”
BRANCHES OF FORENSIC SCIENCE INVOLVED IN THE CASE :
● FORENSIC PSYCOLOGY
● FORENSIC FINGERPRINTING
● FORENSIC SEROLOGY
