  7. 7. 77 Financial Services – Key Business Drivers* * Source: IDC Financial Insights Predictions 2013 Reduce costs and increase efficiency Time to market too slow for new products and functionality Security and data loss prevention in the mobile realm Compliance to financial industry regulations Tackling the risks and opportunities with “mobility” Mergers and acquisitions, requiring IT teams to quickly integrate new firms into the organization Service availability
  8. 8. 88 VMware EUC Financial Services Industry Solutions  Support business continuity planning for desktops and applications  Eliminate re-write of applications  BYOD support  Seamlessly migrate to Windows 7  Enhanced security and compliance  Empower workforce and improve retentivity Branch Office DesktopAlwaysOn Workplace  Support all retail bank and wealth management branches  Extend operational excellence to branches  Disaster recovery and business continuity  Centralized management of infrastructure
  9. 9. 99 VMware AlwaysOn Workplace Solution
  10. 10. 1010 Wealth Management Advisors Insurance Agents Executives Claims Adjustors Key User Profiles for AlwaysOn Workplace Solution
  11. 11. 1111 Must-Haves for Our Target User Profiles Security  Generic or auto login, shared passwords are not compliant  Must be lightweight yet strong Mobility  Highly mobile workforce needs workspace that must roam – on or off premise  Device agnostic Availability  Desktops in the cloud demand continuous service  Planned or unplanned downtime not acceptable for customer-facing employees
  12. 12. 1212 First Step – Deliver Desktops and Apps as a Managed Service Persona Applications Operating System Centralize Management Aggregate Apps To Single Workspace Display to Any Device A Managed Service Model with VMware View and ThinApp
  13. 13. 1313 All Apps Available from Single Desktop
  14. 14. 1414 VMware AlwaysOn™ Workplace Solution Design http://www.vmware.com/files/pdf/solutions/VMware-AlwaysOn-Solution-Datasheet.pdf • Tested / Validated • Multi-Path • Constant Replication • End-to-End Redundancy • Stateless Desktop • Support BYOD and Session Persistence Across Subnets User authenticates and connects to Site A Site A Fails User’s View Session Drops/Fails User re- authenticates User is automatically connected to Site B
  15. 15. 1515 AlwaysOn Workplace Considerations  Identify and start with the right use cases  Take advantage of low cost architectures (Horizon View vFastTrack architecture)  Understand “Content Creation” and “Content Consumption” user profiles and select the technology (Horizon View, Horizon Workspace and Horizon Mirage) to enable users to be highly productive.
  16. 16. 1616 Benefits of AlwaysOn Workplace Supports unbounded mobility of the end user Secure and compliant workplace, since data and desktops never leave the datacenter “Non-stop” service availability Delivers the “last mile” in availability and business continuity Transforms desktops into appliance-grade devices with complete support for VoIP, video and unified communications Leverages infrastructure of private cloud
  17. 17. 1717 VMware Branch Office Desktop Solution
  18. 18. 1818 Key Use Cases for Branch Office Desktop Solution Wealth Management Offices Retail Bank Branches
  19. 19. 1919 Must-Haves for Branch Offices Security  Must be lightweight yet strong Localized Execution  The user experience must be on par with local desktops at the branches Centralized Management  Give IT the ability to manage all the branch infrastructure from one single location
  20. 20. 2020 Branch Offices – Models • Many servers local • Low reliance on WAN • Complexity, high cost • Service guarantees Datacenter/ Cloud Branch Office • No local servers • Full reliance on WAN • Simplicity, low cost • No service guarantees Serverless Branch Datacenter/ Cloud WAN/Internet Branch Office Datacenter/ Cloud WAN/Internet Branch Office • 1–2 local servers • Full reliance on WAN except for mission- critical applications WAN/Internet Lean Branch Full-Service Branch
  21. 21. 2121 Branch Office Desktop Solution Options Availability Low-touch IT in the branch Central image management Local execution across the WAN Horizon View + Riverbed / Cisco Management Performance Availability Fast DR and image recovery; Low-touch IT in the branch Central image management Local execution Management Performance Horizon View + Mirage
  22. 22. 2222 Branch Office Desktop Solution with Horizon Mirage  Local performance with fast application response times across the WAN to enhance end-user productivity  Streamlined remote image management for physical endpoints and virtual clients to deliver just-in-time desktops and drive down operational costs  Centralized data management with policy-driven access for enhanced data security and compliance
  23. 23. 2323 Branch Office Desktop Solution with Riverbed True local performance Benefits VIRTUAL DESKTOPS VMware View Manager WAN Steelhead EX + Granite Steelhead Granite Core  Use Granite to “project” VDI VMs to the branch  Continue to get the benefits of VDI  Desktops are still in the datacenter from a storage, management, patching & security perspective  VDI on the LAN, not the WAN  WAN bandwidth significantly reduced - no need to be sized for VDI  Lower SAN IOPS requirement  Read/Write bursts absorbed locally  SAN sees trickled writes and a few reads
  24. 24. 2424 Benefits of Branch Office Desktop Solution WAN Resiliency: No dependency on WAN connectivity or latency Local Execution: View sessions execute over local LAN Support for peripherals at LAN speed, with full support for VoIP, video and unified communications Centralized Management via Horizon View and Horizon Mirage Leverages infrastructure of private cloud
  25. 25. 2525 VMware vSphere EUC Solutions Build Upon the Private Cloud Foundation Storage Compute Network Desktops Applications Financial IT Services
  26. 26. 2727 Northrim Bank – Success Story with VMware Horizon View
  27. 27. 2828 Northrim Bank  Business Drivers for VDI • Simplicity for business continuity • Centralized management • Secure mobility through VMware View and mobile devices  Business Drivers Cisco UCS E-Series blades (“Branch in a Box”) • Consolidation of devices, lower power and cooling costs • Consolidation of management for devices • Lower number of physical connections but has same redundancy. • Support for branch devices are consistent with same vendor and covers hardware and software including VMware Hypervisor support • Low latency for USB redirected devices on premise vs. over WAN • Multiple Cisco routers and UCS E-Series blades per remote site for vMotion / vSAN redundancy • Unified Communications options within virtualized branch
  28. 28. 2929 Northrim Bank Branch Redundancy Deployment Hypervisor iLIO Cisco ISR / UCS E-Series Hypervisor iLIO Sync MPLS - Primary Internet - Secondary Primary Datacenter Secondary Datacenter Cisco ISR / UCS E-Series
  29. 29. 3030 Northrim Bank  Best Practices and Lessons Learned • Baseline your solution utilizing Login VSI to know your boundaries • iLIO provides lower latency and higher IO on local storage. These lower attributes also lower CPU wait time and per VM CPU was able to be reduced to 1 with the same end-user response experience. • Plan for VPC growth, a better end-user experience is contagious • Have a Business Continuity Plan for VPCs either local or remote, preconfigure the pools and train users • USB redirect is latency sensitive ensure QoS stability for USB redirection over the WAN. (TCP/4172 bi-directional) • USB redirect can/will disconnect if the “Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power” is enabled on USB root hub on local workstation
