1) Belgium has a strong cleantech sector due to its early industrialization which led to environmental issues, progressive environmental policies and standards within the EU framework, and technology development capacity.
2) Key organizations promoting cleantech in Belgium include Flanders Cleantech Association (FCA) and Greenwin cluster in Wallonia which support over 200 companies.
3) Research is conducted by organizations such as VITO which has 750 employees working on projects in energy, materials, chemistry and other areas with an annual turnover of 150 million Euros.

plant
3. Waste
» > 90 % recycling or treatment of industrial waste
» landfill of household waste decreased to < 10 % of total production
4. Soil
» estimation of > 70 000 contaminated grounds
» only limited remediation
7. A STRONG ENVIRONMENTAL TECHNOLOGY SECTOR
1. a progressive (eco-efficient) industry with focus on
» increasing emission preventing technology instead of end of pipe
solutions
» Sustainable production processes – cleantech – sustainable
chemistry and materials companies
2. a strong cleantech sector
» world players and dynamic niche companies
» focus on technology development and export

3 overall objectives : Define – Propose - Attract
Define a Strategic European Research Agenda (SERA) aimed at
– Improving technico-economic performance of emerging CO2 transformation technologies
– Developping new breakthrough solutions and market applications
Propose a Joint Action Plan (JAP) including structural policy measures to favour the transition to a new EU society
based on the “CO2-as-a-resource” paradigm short – mid - longterm
Attract additional EU clusters (universities, research centers, industries)– Regions – Investors participate to multi-
disciplinary research programs and other collaborative actions defined in the Joint Action Plan

QUESTIONS ?
Hinweis der Redaktion
FCA has been founded in 2010 by VITO. VITO is a leading European independent research and technology organisation in the areas of cleantech and sustainable development, elaborating solutions for the large societal challenges of today. VITO provides innovative and high-quality solutions, whereby large and small companies can gain a competitive advantage, and advises industry and governments on determining their policy for the future. VITO has 750 highly-qualified employees who work on international projects all around the world. VITO’s headquarters are located in Mol, Belgium, and the company has a subsidiary in China. The total turnover of VITO amounted to about 140 million euros in 2014.
The role of FCA is to promote the internationalisation of the Flemish cleantech industry.
This implies two aspects: investments, and trade being import and export of technology.
As such, FCA is the cleantech partner of Flanders Investment & Trade (FIT) with whom it has a Collaboration Agreement regarding cleantech.
For its global reach out, FCA has also partnerships with the 2 most important international cleantech platforms:
Cleantech Group, the California based platform for internationally oriented cleantech industry, corporates as well as SMEs, and investor community
GCCA is the grouping of national cleantech clusters, and maintains for instance good relations with the P80 Foundation via The Club de Madrid – this foundation links to the Pension Funds and Family Wealth Offices and currently elaborates projects that must increase the cleantech share in Pension Fund assets.
FCA organises own events, which then focus on B2B or B2Investments, and contributes to the events of others.
Examples:
FCA is Investment Readiness Coach for the Cleantech Summit Rotterdam, organised by europe-unlimited
FCA was program manager for the Investment Track at VITO’s i-sup2014 edtion, which for instance managed to have Richard Branson join in Antwerp
FCA receives many incoming cleantech missions (e.g. from China and India).
