2. Design For Experience
Design studio:
Landscape architectural placemaking , which is the creation of outdoor
“rooms” that provide rich experiences, can be archieved by intentionally
placing spatial components in the design.
4. Trees are orderly arranged in a Grid Organization
System. A sense of secure is then created.
The Proportion of this design fits the Golden Ratio,
which endows aesthetic beauty. People usually find
harmony in this design.
Poplar Court At Arboretum
Vertical Planes are comprised by Poplar trees which are ar-
ranged in lines. The significant height of the Poplar trees
greatly enhances the sense of enclosure. The feeling of secure is
then emphasized.
Eight vegetative vertical planes form an Intense Enclo-
sure and a Strong Enclosure. As a very strong sense
of boundary is created, people might feel like they are
trapped in two rectangles. However, this “feeling trapped”
makes people feel intimate and secure rather than claus-
trophobic because of the permeability provided between
two adjacent Poplar tree trunks.
SPATIAL COMPONENTS IN PSU
Palmer Museum of Art
The giant pair of paws in front of the Museum entrance is a
Landmark in Penn State. People feel very exciting when
they see it because it is a part of Penn State Mascot, Nittany
Lion.
The Ground Plane on this site is paved in a specific
pattern differerntiate the plaza from its surroundings.
It is also a Datum which unifies the plaza and the mu-
seum through the square pattern. People feel curious as
they looking at the pattern because it is so unique in this
campus.
The scale of the plaza, which is located in front of the
Museum, is in Public Human Scale. This scale is not
too small to feel restricted, nor too big to feel empty.
People feel very free to do whether they want.
The Mosaic Columns serve as a Datum
and provide unity in this site. People feel
cheerful when they see those colorful col-
umns, which are very different from the red
brick used in the facade of the Museum.
Secret Garden At Alumni Center
As the size of the aches vary, the largest arch stands out the
most. Thus, Hierarchy in the arches emphasizes the main
entrance of the museum. People’s attention is unconscious-
ly directed to the main entrance and feel curious about
what is inside.
Repeatedly placing same species of trees creates a strong
sense of regularity and unity. In this kind of Repetition,
people feel very controlled.
Poplar Court is located at the west of
Arboretum. The spatial experience in
it is secure, intimate, controlled, and
harmonious.
Placed in the center of the secret garden, the
large flower pot serves as a Focal Point. People
feel very delightful to see those beautiful flowers.
Since the whole garden is surrounded by clus-
ters of vegetation, the vegetation serves as a ref-
uge. People feel protected and relax. They start
to look around the garden. Thus, a Prospect
Refuge is formed.
The benches is placed in Centralized
Organization System. A sense of
order arouse when people enter to
this site.
The garden arch serves as a Threshold in this
garden. It provides smooth transition from the
entrance to the garden. Since its surroundings is
covered by vegetation, people feel serene when
they walk through.
BY IDENTIFYING COMPONENTS OF SPATIAL DESIGN COMPOSITION IN THE CAMPUS,
THE CONCEPT OF DESIGN FOR EXPERIENCE INTENTIONALLY CAN BE FURTHER EXPLORED.
The spatial experience of Palmer Museum of
Art is cheerful, exciting, curious, and free.
The spatial experience of Secret Garden of Art
is delightful, immersive, orderly, relax, pro-
tected, and serene.
Since the whole
garden is sur-
rounded by vegeta-
tion, a very private
Spatial Volume
is formed. People
often immerse into
the environment
entirely without
noticing it.

Walking With Water Flows
DESIGN INTENT
SITE ANALYSIS SPATIAL COMPONENTS
Volume: Immerse
Rhythm and Repetition: Orderly
Line: Curious
The slightly depressed ecological water filter forms a strong spatial volume. People often find themselves immersed
into this tranquil space unconsiously during their explorations in this spatial volume.
Sunlight & Openness
Circulation
Roof Runoff & Visibility
The paths of the water flows is designated
to constantly interact with the pedestrians’
circulation.
The filter of the ARD is purposely placed in
an area that can been seen from any angle
Scuppers are installed to eliminate the
hazardous caused by the roof runoff
The water flows’ paths are designated to
actively communicate with the filter and the
runoff site
This design emphasize the curvilinear flow of water by contrasting it
with the rectilinear form suggested by the campus fabric. The paths
are designated for people to explore the Artful Rain Water Design
with the natural flow of water in contrast of those rectilinear design
forms in this site.

Most of the design forms are designated in straight line in order to make great contrast to the natural curvilinear
line of water flows, which unifies the design. People may have a strong feel of orderly while experiencing it.
Two adjacent sides, sometimes three sides, are
bounded by high walls with vegetation within
the main seating area, creating a very strong
sense of privateness

Only backed by a high wall, this

the ground implies this area is the exten-
sion of the main area and also enhance
the site’s unity.

Pedestrians’ Interactions
There are several ways to interact
with the Artful Rain Water Design,
including rest, pass by, and pause.
These make the educational process
of stormwater management fun and
engaging.
The contrast between two forms of lines, straight and curvilinear, is the emphasize of this design. Due to their great
difference in terms of shape, the attention of people walking by them are caught and people feel very curious about
what is happening.
By physically access with the
journey of stormwater treatment
process, people are educated with
this process and be aware that
Penn State values the sustainabil-
ity of stormwater.
