Various film techniques are used to create humor and intrigue the audience, such as close-ups during dialogue, editing to emphasize Ali-G blocking a bullet with his ring, and the revelation that the threatening opening was all a dream. The analysis concludes the opening successfully sets the tone for the comedy film and pulls the audience in to watch more.
2. THE GENRE I WILL BE
FOCUSING ON
I have chosen to look at comedy and
hopefully make a brilliant comedy opening
scene at the end of this project. I have chosen
comedy because I’m huge fan of comedy film
and I think that comedy is the best type of
genre you would watch. I also know that if a
comedy is not funny it’s awful so for that
reason I will make sure I do my research
properly in order to produce a perfect comedy
opening because the comedy market is big,
therefore it can easily become very known or
become a film nobody has ever heard of.

4. ANALYSIS
Typography
The typography in Ali G is big and bold, it has been on whilst the movie
is playing.it has been but in white which is quite a neutral colour
doesn’t suggest bad, but suggests good.
Mise-en-scene
Mise en scene shown in this opening scene is when Ali G is driving
through a town and there is lots of Mexicans looking at him aggressively
show that Ali g is driving through gangsters and it makes you feel like
something is going to happen, in other words suspense is created. Also
by looking at what Ali G is wearing suggests that he too might be a
gangster, he’s got gold chains, a fresh and a jersey that says Westside.
The fact that his jersey says Westside can suggest that he’s from the
west, that might be the reason why people are giving him dirty looks,
because he’s not a local.
5. Narrative
Enigma code is used when Ali G is in his car driving through the dodgy
town, it makes the audience think where is he going and why are people
giving him dirty looks. Also enigma code is used when there is 20 men
pointing spray their bullets on him and he does not get shot, also he dances
as if he dodging the bullets. It makes the audience think how can he not get
hit by any of those bullet, after we see he wakes up from a dream. So he
whole opening scene is what he is in his dream.
Genre
The genre is comedy, but it’s a parody comedy because its basically mocking
gangsters. Ali G puts on a Caribbean accent and speaks slang.
Sound
The music is quite funky so the audience will get a sense of comedy straight
away just by listening the music, there is mostly dialogue and the way Ali G
speaks will make the audience laugh because of the accent he puts on. What
makes it funny that he speaks with a Caribbean accent is the fact that he is
white but he’s speaking like a black Caribbean person.
6. Camera shots
There is allot of close ups/ medium close ups because of the fact that there
is a lot of dialogue so what they are saying must be shown to the
audience.
Editing
This is used when Ali G blocks the last bullet with his gold ring, when he
does this the came stops on, this is done because there it shows the film
is all about him.
Conclusion
In conclusion the opening for Ali G suits its genre and shows the audience
that’s it’s a comedy, it pulls the audience to want to watch more because it
sets the tone and the enigma code helps keep the audience interesting
because they want to see if the film has more funny bits to it because the
start will make them laugh.
