What does bim mean to you

What does bim mean to you
What does bim mean to you
Some weeks ago, I
raised this poll to find
out the primary reason
why most professionals
create 3D models
There are just
several reasons
why people create
3D models.
It all depends on where
where you are coming
coming from…
3D modelling is just a typical example
This points to the fact that we can do seemingly similar things
and yet produce a completely different outcome - for completely
different purposes.
The meaning we attach to things is oftentimes based on our expectations, and perhaps
expectations, and perhaps our experience levels too.
The built sector has made a lot of progress in Digital Transformation and Technology Adoption
in the past few decades. We have quickly progressed from 2D drafting to 3D modelling.
• Some people call it a
progression from
Documentation to
Data Optimisation.
• Some others call it a
progression from CAD
to BIM.
You might be tempted to think that BIM means the same thing to
every stakeholder in the built sector until you search for the
meaning of BIM on the internet
Building Information Modeling (BIM) is a digital representation of
the physical and functional characteristics of a facility that serves
as a shared knowledge resource for information about a facility,
forming a reliable basis for decisions during its life cycle from
inception onwards.
One of the most popular definitions of BIM is the one from the National Institute of Building Sciences:
But Think about it…
The bottom line for
implementing BIM on a
project for a Design
Consultant is typically
different from that of a
General Contractor
The bottom line for a Trade or
Sub-contractor is different from
that of a Building Owner
There are academics doing lots of
research in the industry as well as
software vendors who provide the
technology that makes BIM practicable
in the first place
What does BIM Mean to You?
These are all stakeholders in the built sector with no sharp
demarcations between them.
The real question is:
Why do you implement BIM on projects?
From buildingSMART's
BIM Project Execution
Planning Guide, there are
25 major BIM Uses in the
industry today
As a Consultant, you are
probably more interested in
the Planning and Design
stage BIM Uses on
projects
As a General Contractor or
Sub-contractor, you are
probably more interested in
the Construction stage BIM
Uses
As a building owner, you
are probably more
interested in the Operation
stage BIM Uses
While the industry has made a
monumental leap in recent years
from just 2D Drafting to Data
Optimisation towards these
these diverse BIM Uses - and
more – the workflows are
generally still siloed
Take the traditional contract/delivery method of buildings as
an example…
While the diverse stakeholders in the built sector might attach
different meanings to BIM, the penetration of cloud-based
solutions into the sector is increasingly connecting these
stakeholders and their respective activities
***A very popular solution is Autodesk Construction Cloud
***There are also solutions from Procore, Trimble, Bentley, Allplan, Graphisoft...
I will use Autodesk Construction Cloud to demonstrate how the cloud can truly connect every stakeholder on a
project over the entire building delivery life cycle
Plan/Design
Design Consultants on a
project can collaborate and
coordinate in real-time using
the Design Collaboration,
Document Management, and
Management, and Model
Model Coordination Modules
Modules of Autodesk
Construction Cloud…
Autodesk Docs can
open over 70 industry
file formats on the
cloud or through the
mobile app
Reviewers on projects can easily make
their contributions using the various markup
tools in the 2D and 3D viewer of Autodesk
Construction Cloud
Changes across different versions
of 2D and 3D files and documents
can be graphically reviewed right
on the cloud
Clashes between the inter-disciplinary models can be easily identified and resolved through the combination of the
authoring tools and the ACC platform
Build/Operate
General Contractors, Sub-contractors, Suppliers and Manufacturers, Clients,
Consultants, and every other major stakeholder on a building project can
coordinate in real-time on the field using the Build, Document Management,
and Cost Modules of Autodesk Construction Cloud.
This Connected Construction workflow brings about immense savings in cost and time on projects.
With the Sheets feature, sheets
can be easily published from the
existing BIM models of the
project for those in the field
Forms enable project managers to set up activity checklists and collect information
from workers on a job site
With the Issues feature, anomalies on a
project – either during design or on the field –
can be identified and addressed
A formal request for information (RFI) is used when information is required from other project members
The Meetings toolset in
Autodesk Build allows Project
Managers to Create meetings,
Track attendance, Create
agendas, and Create minutes
The Submittals feature enables documents created for consumption by other companies to run through a formal
review process in Autodesk Build
The Assets tool in Autodesk
Build allows teams to easily
track and manage the life
cycle of all project's assets
and equipment, from design,
through commissioning and
handover
The Reports tool
provides a central
location to create,
configure, schedule,
and view reports
The Cost module in
Autodesk Build
enables you to
manage the cost and
budget changes to
your project
The Insight module delivers unified project-level data, analytics, and predictive insights on a project. This
integrates with Partner Data and Analytics, and also Construction IQ
All these bring about a truly Connected
Construction workflow.
With all the graphical and non-graphical information about a project/assets
going into a Common Data Environment – from Design to the project handover
– the Facility Manager and the Owner will have enough information to efficiently
manage the facility.
***The illustrations so far have been with the Autodesk Construction Cloud suite of solutions. That does not
imply it is the only solution in the market…
So, What
Does BIM
Mean To
You?
The reality is that BIM means a
multitude of things to a myriad of
stakeholders, companies, and
geographical locations, based on
multiple factors
However, from a holistic viewpoint, the
meaning we append to and the expectations
we have of BIM are not as important as the
connection that BIM brings when properly
properly deployed with cloud-based solutions;
thus, filling so many inefficiency gaps.
This is the era of Connected Construction…
• The Focus of My LinkedIn Learning Courses
A few months ago, I became an Instructor
at LinkedIn Learning.
The theme of most of my courses will be
Connected Construction.
The various tools that make cloud
collaboration possible in our industry –
spanning the entire life cycle of built
assets…
Thank
You
