  1. 1. M.UDAY KUMAR PIEZOELECTRIC ENERGY HARVESTING
  2. 2. ABSTRACT  Energy harvesting becomes more and more important in our life. Energy is harvested from ambient environment such as mechanical, thermal, light, electromagnetic, human body, and etc to replace traditional sources. Mechanical energy harvesting is the most promising of several energy harvesting techniques: it uses piezoelectric (PE) components that transfers the vibration energy to the electrical energy. This electrical energy can be regulated and stored before using by the electronic devices where the replacement of the batteries is impractical, such as the wireless micro sensor networks, implementable medical electronic, and tire pressure sensor system.
  3. 3. INTRODUCTION  Piezo electric effect is the ability of certain materials to generate an electric charge in response to applied mechanical stress  Piezo electricity is derived from greek word “piezo” or “piezein”. Which means to squeeze or press  Piezo electric effect is formed in crystal having no centre of symmetry  Piezo electricity was first proved by french physicist btothers pierre and jacques curie
  4. 4. MATERIALS EXHIBIT PIEZO ELECTRIC EFFECT •Quartz •Ammonium dihydrogen phosphate (ADP) •Lithium sulfate •Rochelle salt. •Antimony sulfoiodide •Piezoelectric ceramics Barium titanate (TB-1) •Calcium barium titanate (TBK-3). .Dry bone
  5. 5. WORKING  Crystals which acquire a charge when compressed, twisted or distorted and vice versa are said to be piezoelectric materials  When piezo electric materials are subjected to stress charges are distibuted and create potential difference
  6. 6. APPLICATIONS 1.Sensing instrument(eg.pressure detection) 2.Ultra sonic sensors 3.Electric ciggar lighter 4.Mobile phones and kreypads 5.Series of crystalls used to blow lights 6.Gyms and working places 7.Piezo electric motars
  7. 7. ADVANTAGES  It is a green energy  pollution free  Maintanence cost is low  Easy replacement of equipment
  8. 8. DISADVANTAGES  Crystals is break due to high stress  Power out put is too low  May effect due to temperature  Low energy density
  9. 9. Conclusion  The goal of the project is to determine if it is possible to change a personal electronic device using wasted energy harvested from walking or jogging. I used a piezoelectric strip that generated energy when bent. The output of the piezoelectric plate was connected to an energy harvesting device and whose output was connected to either a battery or super capacitor. Once this device was charged, it was connected to an electronic device, such as an iPod, for final charging.
