Future Visualization with Children

  3. The Hypothesis Children have great ability to visualize the future because of their relatively unbiased and un-coloured minds, and if stimulated sufficiently they can give us highly creative and imaginative ideas of possible future scenarios.
  4. What We Did As part of ICE, we are constantly on the look out for opportunities that give us an insight into the future of things. We wanted to explore the concept of “beginner’s mind” which is said to be an attitude of openness, eagerness and lack of preconceptions and realized that it was the mind of a child that we wanted a peek into.
  5. What We Did We ideated and devised a unique way of getting children to give us their insights about what they think will happen in the future. The result was a board game called “The Trip to the Future” which we used to conduct “playshops”. This method got us very exciting responses. We would love to take you through the journey.

  7. Areas of Interest As a team, we wanted to explore domains such as: • Cities and urban life • Education • Entertainment • Communication • Work and workplace • Sustainability
  8. The Participants The idea was to get children from different backgrounds and levels of exposure and yet try not to overwhelm the scope of the exercise. We finally went with children aged between 8 and 12 and a mix of girls and boys. We conducted playshops in 3 cities, Mumbai, Pune and Pondicherry and had children from both high and low income families.
  9. Conceptualizing the “Playshop” The sessions had to be stimulating enough for children to stay engaged without getting distracted. Based on research about effective workshops with children and ideating within the team, we arrived at some guidelines and ideas for the sessions: • Present the stimuli in the form of problems of the future or incomplete scenarios, which then get completed by the children • Allow children to express themselves freely using different media like writing, drawing, speaking or play-acting • Make the sessions more play than work.
  10. The Board Game The team developed a board game, which would engage the children without intimidating them. While playing the game, we hypothesized, the children would suggest solutions and ideas for various scenarios. The game is called “Trip to the Future” and presents an imaginary and futuristic setup that takes the children on a long trip to space. On this journey, they encounter some imaginary problems that they need to solve. These ‘problems’ represented our areas of interest that we wanted to explore with the children.
  11. The Board Game The game has adventure, aliens, spacecrafts and much thrill. The scenarios help us get responses for these key questions among others: • How will food be produced in the future? • What will future houses look like? • How will people entertain themselves? • Who will they look for as companions? • How will they be educated?

  15. Optimal group size We organized playshops with no more than 20 children per group. We then divided the group into two or three sub-groups and facilitated games with each sub-group.
  16. Encourage & Include In most of the sessions, we came across children with different dispositions. Some were more open and confident, others a bit shy. We made sure that we got all of them to participate and gave them the freedom to express themselves in whatever way they were most comfortable, either verbally or by writing or drawing. In some cases, the facilitators had to use appropriate probes to get them thinking about the future.

Technology – The Great Equalizer!  The ever growing popularity of mobile phones has meant that children from lower income families are now very familiar with various games they play on the mobile.  Similarly, cable television has introduced lower income families to a range of foreign films and TV shows, which are broadcast in regional languages.  Children from low income families were inspired by TV shows and movies like Ben10,Jungle Book, Doraemon, Ninja Hattori, Mr. Bean, Shinchan, Chhota Bheem, Harry Potter and latest Indian films.  Children from high income families were inspired by Iron man, Spider man, Doraemon, Phineas and Ferb, Hunger Games, Avengers, Tom & Jerry, Ice Age, Adventures of Tintin, Life of pi, Monster High and lots of books.

Key Themes The responses revealed several themes, the most important of which are: • Small and Powerful • Wearable Technology • 3D Printing • Technology will be More Human • In low income groups: • Safety and Security • Aspiration • In High income groups: • Sustainability • All Sci-fi What do the Futurists say? Interestingly, we realized that futurists have also spoken about some of these themes and we have presented their views as we explore these themes further.

Safety and Security • Responses from children from low income families reflected their need to stay secure with their friends and family. • Most of their responses for the houses they would build in space included a key safety aspect. “The reason I like talking about fear is that it's a human experience. Aspiration Low income group A lot of the responses from children from low income families pointed to aspirations in terms of material belongings. “In his role as optimist, Arnold noted that in fact we have a growing global middle class, with projections of 3.6 billion middle-class people by 2030.   22. Sustainability High income group Many children from high income families gave responses that showed their concerns about the environment and their willingness to provide sustainable solutions. This can be attributed to greater exposure to environmental issues. “…it also became clear that concern about the environment was not limited to consumers from developed economies – the 2010 World Economic Forum report suggested that such concern was as strong in the developing world, “and in some areas stronger as they [people in the developing world] are often more directly affected [by], for example, water pollution.” – Chris Laszlo and Nadya Zhexembayeva. What are the 5 most important things you will take along with you? • Food: When you think of something you want to eat, it is transported to your stomach so you don’t have to stop your activities for food. • Robots: If you don’t want to do something or can’t do it, the robot will do it. • Gadgets: So that if any problem is encountered, the gadget can solve it. Can also be used for wireless communication through the robot. • Clothes: Unlike the present spacesuits, which are bulky, the space clothes will be close to what we wear normally. • Fuel: If the spacecraft runs out of fuel; Fuel can be anything, e.g. mud, waste material, etc. Screen Has an interface of the whole spacecraft Controls Drop waste/ mud here Waste is turned to fuel here Navigation Connected to robot so if there’s a problem, the gadget can convey it to the robot. Some children also thought of producing extra fuel using in-house waste material.

Automatic TV; we can just order it to change channels. Sofa with wheels, it comes to us when we ask it to. An automatic kitchen, which prepares anything we want it to prepare; If I want a chocolate cake, we can just ask the kitchen and it will bake the cake for me An automatic fridge, which opens on our command. More automatic furniture. Automatic! Automatic TV, sofa, kitchen, fridge and furniture – children expect these objects to function without much physical effort.

How will you offer your favorite food to everyone? Food ordering goes to the next level – children presented various ideas on how food could be ordered in the future. All the ideas had one thing in common – they wanted instant gratification. The interfaces to order food included tablets, simple phones or cameras inside eyes controlled by eye gestures like winking. We have cameras in our eyes, we can just wink and pizzas can come out. “Sausages” is typed I have a tablet, where I can draw/ write that I want pizza, and the pizza will arrive on the tablet. How will you offer your favorite food to everyone? Get the “Pipop” gadget from Doraemon; it lets you enter a slice of pizza, enter the quantity and the gadget produces that many pizzas. The influence of TV shows like Doraemon is clearly the inspiration for this idea. This child wanted a gadget that replicates food in as much quantity as needed, based on a small food sample.

How will you offer your favorite food to everyone? Pizza plant: There’s a pizza producing plant. It will be able to count the inhabitants and make that many pizzas. It will be able to replicate the taste and toppings of my pizza. A pizza plant that produces food for the whole community.

How will you offer your favorite food to everyone? I’d use a food machine to produce food out of the things around, which we don’t need I’d build a house which would be invisible so that we’re safe from dangerous aliens. In this house, there will be a big inventing and fixing room. There will also be a chair, which would let us watch TV, move here and there and do other things. A food machine with the capability to produce food using waste material.

How will you offer your favorite food to everyone? One of the respondents, Nikolas, was full of ideas on how food could be transported in the future. The simplest solution according to him would be to have machines that could replicate food. Put food in one machine, send it across to the other place and take as many copies as required. Alternately, he also thought of creating food on his smart device and then making the food available for all. Finally, he also had the idea of food pills – pills that once put in water expand to become full-sized food items.

What kind of creatures will you get to reside on that planet? Sharing and updating status messages was top of mind for one child. He wanted to run live content updates for people on earth. There would also be contests based on the live streaming and the winners of the contests would get a chance to join him in space.

I would communicate with the help of my space telephone with creatures of other planets. I would ask them about their living, etc. and we would communicate with my translation tool. I would also communicate with people back on earth and tell them about my condition. I would ask them to send me some entertainment like video games, and books. The books will be e-books, powered by atmospheric resources. Interaction with inhabitants of earth and outer space through special communication devices like “space telephone”. Gunadevi wanted a future city where she envisions a mix of technology and nature, urbanism and culture. In her city of the future there are traditionally built houses with all the modern amenities; a lot of people walking around on the streets along with some motorized transport as well; some people also fly around to keep the congestion levels low on the ground.

Most detailed self-sustained house! Laurima drew a design for the recycling of water for various household purposes and showed how vegetables could be grown right next to the house.

Lema wanted a house that could fly. Further, she wanted her house to show emotions, happy when everyone in the house was happy and sad when people in the house were sad.

The residents would be safer if they stayed at a level higher than the ground.

She would like to keep all the animals inside the spaceship so that wherever she went, she could replicate life on Earth.

This concept sends the image that one is seeing to the alien species, using an in-built translator; the aliens decipher the image and send it back. This way the lens acts as a very advanced communication device.

  58. Conclusion The board game “Trip to the Future” turned out to be an engaging way for children to give us interesting and unique responses. The success of playshops across locations reinforces the effectiveness of the research methodology. It is interesting to note that the key findings were in line with many a futurist’s visions. The team also observed how technology is emerging as a way of making society more equal with the ubiquity of mobile phones and cable television. We would like to collaborate and work with researchers across the world and extend the study to other countries. It will be exciting to be able to report what children from various parts of the world have to say about the future.
