The decentralized and engineering-driven approach of open source projects can conflict with usability methodologies. We will review existing cases of UX design contribution to open source projects, discuss how designers can become part of the community and what engineers can do to improve usability of the software they build.

People often use computers other than their own to access web content, but blind users are restricted to using only computers equipped with expensive, special-purpose screen reading programs that they use to access the web. Web-Anywhere is a web-based, self-voicing web browser that enables blind web users to access the web from almost any computer that can produce sound without installing new software. The system could serve as a convenient, low-cost solution for blind users on-the-go, for blind users unable to afford a full screen reader and for web developers targeting accessible design. This paper overviews existing solutions for mobile web access for blind users and presents the design of the WebAnywhere system. WebAnywhere generates speech remotely and uses prefetching strategies designed to reduce perceived latency. A user evaluation of the system is presented showing that blind users can use Web-Anywhere to complete tasks representative of what users might want to complete on computers that are not their own. A survey of public computer terminals shows that WebAnywhere can run on most.

You know where to find those unprotected creds that unlock the mysteries of the LAN. You know which hashes grant DA and root to the infrastructure. All the bases belong to you, but do you know how to follow once the path leads into the clouds? As more and more companies move part or all of their operations into the cloud, penetration testers need to think beyond the traditional network boundaries and follow the data and services they are after. The intent of this talk is to provide penetration testers as well as defenders a foundation on cloud services from an attacker’s point of view. This talk is cloud-agnostic and focuses on the general topics and attack patterns necessary to assess cloud-based services rather than specific implementations or vulnerabilities. Do you know the differences between IaaS, PaaS, and SaaS and which vulnerabilities are applicable to each? Am I even allowed to assess my company’s cloud resources? Do you know what credentials you need to move from the corporate network into cloud based services? Do you know where to find them? What dependencies can you compromise to complete your objectives? What kinds of recommendations can I make to improve the security of my client’s cloud deployments? Companies trust key portions of their operations, services, and data to public and private clouds and unless their internal and third-party testers must assess these deployments.

Decentralized access control with anonymous authentication of data stored in clouds parallel distributed systems We propose a new decentralized access control scheme for secure data storage in clouds that supports anonymous authentication. In the proposed scheme, the cloud verifies the authenticity of the series without knowing the user's identity before storing data. Our scheme also has the added feature of access control in which only valid users are able to decrypt the stored information. The scheme prevents replay attacks and supports creation, modification, and reading data stored in the cloud. We also address user revocation. Moreover, our authentication and access control scheme is decentralized and robust, unlike other access control schemes designed for clouds which are centralized. The communication, computation, and storage overheads are comparable to centralized approaches.

For remote users, traditional L3 VPNs extend that perimeter, placing remote users' endpoints directly onto the enterprise network. User experience can be drastically elevated by combining data science insights with user-based insights from research. Data analytics on its own can make themes and correlations difficult to explain and to provide accurate recommendations. For example, themes identified via large global surveys and usage data can be better understood with UX insights from focused user research, such as user interviews and/or cognitive walkthroughs. This presentation will highlight the complimentary nature of data science and UX and will focus on the benefits of bringing the two disciplines together. This will be buttressed with practical examples of enterprise projects and applications that combined data and skills from the two disciplines, guidance on how the two disciplines can better work together, and the skills needed to improve as a UX professional when working with data science teams.

Users do not always accurately describe what they mean or feel. There are many reasons for this, ranging from politeness to poor introspection, to lack of sufficient technical vocabulary. Fortunately, UX researchers have tools in their trade to deduce what was really meant. We call this UX Fracking, a mixed methods approach that is optimized for extracting hidden user insights. We will illustrate the dangers of inadequate, superficial research, and how this may lead to outcomes incapable of addressing the users’ core issues. We will explore ways to avoid these pitfalls by leveraging mixed research methods to test hypotheses about the users’ intent and needs. This starts with a thorough understanding of who the user is, their goals, and how they work today, to an approach that combines surveys, interviews, and comment analysis with behavioral observation, and finally, validating the newly discovered user insights with the users themselves.

We will present a case study that details our approach for replacing user personas with user roles for a multi-national SAAS company. We will take the audience on a journey that starts with an executive request for personas, travels through the tribulations of realizing personas suck, and concludes with convincing others to accept a new and innovative way to understand the people who use the product. Our key message is that personas lack real value for organizations that already understand the importance of empathizing with users. Building user-centered products requires easily accessible and well organized user insights. We will discuss defining users through a process of stakeholder consultation and content review, and structuring data around Jobs to Be Done and product interactions. We will also discuss the dissemination of user roles in our organization using relational databases, interactive dashboards and online wikis. Spoiler alert, our stakeholders loved user roles!
